Also, please cover "Orthorexia-nervosa" Orthorexia nervosa is a proposed eating disorder characterized by an excessive preoccupation with eating healthy food. The term was introduced in 1997 by American physician Steven Bratman, M.D.

‘Eating disorders don’t discriminate’ but Dr Chucks emphatically focuses on the ‘weight threshold’ for anorexia. Very disappointing. The weight requirement for anorexia diagnosis was removed from the latest DSM. It is now widely recognised that anorexia presents in people of any weight, instead being characterised primarily by behavioural and cognitive symptoms, along with weight loss (at any weight) and other physical symptoms such as fatigue and nutritional deficiencies. Keep up Dr Chucks, supposed expert. Stop triggering people with eating disorders and discouraging them from getting help. I had anorexia when I was underweight, I still have anorexia right now at a healthy weight.

What you are describing is atypical anorexia. Diagnostically the patient is required to have lost a significant amount of weight, but not necessarily be underweight. This will still cause unstable obs and be dangerous, re-feeding disorder can still occur.

@@sfrancies87 This was the case until a year or so ago, but the original commenter is right the DSM actually removed weight threshold as a diagnostic criteria in its most recent edition. Atypical anorexia is actually no longer a thing as it can be a really dangerous label that causes a lot of people to get sicker. Anorexia can present in anyone of any weight. The NHS still use BMI as a diagnostic criteria because they are so oversubscribed and so need to address the most risky cases, that doesn't make them the most severe. Anorexia is an illness and a mindset not a body shape or size.

@@aws_540 yes that’s exactly what I said but in a longer format. Anorexia nervosa is the type that gets the main online coverage, but it’s very often just shortened to anorexia. That’s where the confusion comes in for people to assume that ALL eating disorders are related to weight but they’re not. This is because two conditions are being talked about with the same word but no further explanation. Anxiety/depression etc can cause any type without there being any aspect of weight being involved.

It’s a shame that the doctor talks about the ‘weight threshold’ with anorexia being a key difference between bulimia and anorexia. NICE actually recently removed the weight threshold in it’s diagnostic criteria for anorexia if I’m not mistaken because predominantly it is thoughts and thought patterns that characterise the illness and although people are usually underweight anyone who has suffered from anorexia knows it is not always about your body looking a certain way- it’s about a feeling.

Really disappointing to hear the primary difference between anorexia and bulimia being weight. That’s not true. While you can have binging and purging with Anorexia, it’s about the frequency. Many people with Anorexia don’t binge at all. Bulimia is characterised by the binging and purging. While there is a weight limit on a diagnosis of AN, you can have OSFED or Atypical Anorexia if you meet all the other criteria for Anorexia but not the weight threshold. You wouldn’t be diagnosed with Bulimia unless you meet THOSE criteria. So he’s just wrong.

He was asked the medical differentiation and that's what it is. Literally everything could trigger them to lose more do you want him to lie instead? It's important for others to spot, because some may be unaware that it can still be an eating disorder at any weight. You can't stop talking about it because it may trigger the sufferers. I've been around ppl who just seeing an image of a thinner person triggers them

@@farhana6913 Look, I’m not lying or disagreeing with the fact that weight criteria is PART of the diagnosis. However, he was asked what the difference between anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa is and the weight criteria is all he could list, which is simply not factually correct or helpful. You’re right, anybody could be triggered by anything. But let’s not forget this is a professional on a show with thousands and thousands of viewers. He has a responsibility to deliver accurate, helpful information and i felt like ( and many others from the comments) he didn’t do that. I would expect a doctor ( especially one with a BOOK) would be able to say more criteria for an eating disorder besides weight. Let’s not forget it is a mental disorder with physical side effects. I was disappointed like the many others in this thread. By his criteria anybody “ underweight” could just be suffering from anorexia. Too simplified and is simply harmful to sufferers. Yes SOME may be underweight but most won’t be and most will be suffering in silence until they fit the weight criteria.
