Stress Versus Anxiety: How This Herb May Help

Some people will use stress and anxiety interchangeably, but stress and anxiety are not the same, there are some distinct differences between the two. Why does is matter? One reason is because there’s an herbal remedy that’s gaining a lot of attention that works for stress but not so much for anxiety. In this video I discuss the difference between stress and anxiety and how they overlap. I also talk about how the herb Ashwaganda may help your anxiety.

@@samia6888 that sucks that they can't provide you with reliable info. Here our pharmacists know much more than the doctors about interactions, often they do need to look things up though. I've been taking Ashwaganda for well over a year. It took a long time for it to work. Recently, I have been getting better sleep, getting to sleep earlier and stating asleep for a solid 7+years hours. I'm glad I stuck with it. I am ADD, have low self esteem, think too much, low motivation, lack of focus and the ability to follow through a project. I'll be in counseling within the next few weeks. I'm retired, 71, and should be enjoying life... but I'm not... but at least I'm sleeping better. Small steps....

@@sadhiktm2141 it CAN of course because it’s a stimulant, and some people find it can be beneficial. But every case is different, I know people who one cup with send their anxiety for a loop. I have combined type ADHD and OCPD and I personally love coffee and a half of a cup while my vyvanse is kicking in can help give me the small boost to get the focus and ambition to start my work on a good foot and continue that throughout the day - having OCPD a good start to the day and that routine with the habitual coffee is helpful, but more than a cup and I get jittery and will feel subtle anxiety all day. When I have a cup of coffee but feel like I still need that feeling I get warm cup of matcha green tea that has less caffeine (the box I get rates it 1-5 and I look for any that are 1-2) because of the nootropic effects, it helps me stay on task without introducing a lot of caffeine into my system. Similarly, just like with everything, moderation is key and finding a balance is good, I stay in an area where if I don’t have caffeine I don’t get withdrawals, just like periodically I will take breaks from my vyvanse so that I don’t build tolerance and I’m paranoid of addiction. These are all supplementary and can be very beneficial is used correctly. I personally find green tea to work better than coffee late in the day because it gives you the same mental focus and fortitude without the intensity of coffee

Correct me if I'm wrong, so essentially stress is what happens to you in the moment, in the present. Anxiety is worrying about what may happen in the future. For example for stress, you're crossing the road and see a car coming towards you and will hit you if you don't evade. For anxiety, you're waiting to cross the road but can't stop thinking that a car MIGHT run you over if you try to cross

Please do one on the mineral Chromium! Its cheap, and can make a big difference, as it helps stabilize mood and regulate blood sugar. Its an important micro mineral thats not often found in good quantities in food anymore because of modern agricultural practices. I worked at a small health food store where the ND who owned it would often prescribe it to people, particularly tired moms. Pregnancy can deplete Chromium from mothers. The change in the customers was dramatic, and the supplements were like less then $5/month. Its not to be taken while pregnant. There are a lot of initial studies to prove it can help, but usually also in a bigger picture. I was at high risk for PPD because of past mental health/trauma issues, and I was fine, I sometimes wonder if its because I took chromium regularly a few times a week after my sons births.

Thank you. This discussion of stress is exactly what I experience, and it is, in my opinion, perceived stress rather than any measure of actual stress. I am trying ashwagandha, though it may have possible medication interactions. For me, stress has always been cumulative and it is difficult for me to return to the previous baseline after experiencing stress, and subsequent stressors elevate further this already raised stress level. I have been experiencing the symptoms you have described for years, and I will try to find more information on the subject in order to better understand and manage stress as the actual underlying cause of so many psychological and physical problems. TY

Thank you very much for explaining stress vs anxiety. I knew the difference but also did not realize that I was also using them interchangably. I took Ashwaganda for several months and was happy with initial results but got depressed when it felt like my anxiety was creeping back in. I got frustrated, disregarded all short term gains, and had actually forgotten that I ever took it until I saw this video. Hearing you explain that It is most effective for cortisol control i.e. stress I now realize that I, as someone with an anxiety disorder, was only doing half the work. I was also running into some of the side effects (at 300-400mg twice daily) as I was a couple months into my usage. Seeing this vid has jogged my memory I have some advice for anyone considering using this: A) As stated it is effective for cortisol, NOT ANXIETY. You will be less anxious at first but that's because you are literally de-stressed. After a while, if you have a disorder or are still around your triggers, your anxiety will catch back up with you but remember this is but one of many herbs that do such things. Find a complimentary herb for your actual anxiety. B) Ashwaganda takes time to build up and can build up to toxic levels. This means you should be cycling. That means taking the herb in non-consecutive, but still regular intervals(i.e. one week one, one week off or any variation of that). This also means that it might not work immediately (It did for me but I have ADHD and am constantly checking on my mental state/lucidity so I notice when something is even slightly different in my head). DO NOT double your dose or take another right after because you're not "feeling it". After a while your tolerance will go up and having a little extra as a treat isn't so bad but it is a very slippery slope as with anything. This is not a cure. it is not supposed to work for everything always. All that being said Ashwaganda can be a great relief to a tired mind and feels like a really nice kick in the pants. Passion and motivation come back when stress is literally gone. I hyperfocused a lot and it gives a really good buzz behind the eyes and in the sinus cavity. It gave me my life back and had I known the protocol it wouldn't have been so habit forming. I kicked it when I felt like it with little to no side effects save for exhaustingly vivid dreams.

My stress elevated, and other illnesses arose. I did end the marriage, and some of the illnesses disappeared but not the psoriasis. I then went through a lengthy situation of emotional abuse, and developed a full on anxiety disorder, then was prescribed antidepressants, then the psoriasis went away. Makes me wonder if I should have been prescribed antidepressants in the first place, rather than steroid ointment, if it worsened my overall health, and thus, my life. The doctors wouldn't have known about this herb, though it sounds like it would have helped.

Such a good topic!! As a kid, psychiatrists and therapists thought I had anxiety. Spent years trying to CBT my way out of stressors like parental ab*se and poverty. Guess what? When I had a living income and didn’t live with them my “anxiety” magically went away. Wish someone had helped me do that sooner. I wasn’t thinking of “the worst case scenario” when worrying we wouldn’t be able to pay our bills. That was a rational, reasonable scenario that happened to us, and others we knew. I think many poor people or traumatized people are told they’re “anxious” when we really just need help relieving the stressful situations. I also hope child psychiatrists today spot situational stress better.

He even put them in the living room so it was pitch black in the living room but bright as day until 8 pm in my room. We also had a streetlight that would wake up at around 3 am. I would usually be in flight or flight around then. I would have to go to work around. 4 or 5 so I would go ahead and leave the house to go get breakfast. It was awful. I almost left him. He’s tried to make up for it since then but idk if our relationship can make it. This morning he helped me get ready for work which was really nice since the last few mornings have been hard on me. My coworkers seem to be more demanding in the mornings as well I always wondered why the mornings were the hardest. I never knew cortisol levels were the highest in the mornings. I'd love to see a video on the positive symptoms of metal health conditions in general and/or maybe follow up videos delving more into specific ones? Its easy to get bogged down in the negatives but there are some positive to neuroatypical thinking. Personally, I my ADHD, autism and BPD mean that; all emotions are very intense but in the case of positive ones it CAN be very rewarding, hyper-focus/ obsessions have made me very skilled/ knowledgeable in some areas, increases in empathy and abstract thinking often means people around me feel understood, an ability to be manipulative can be the best course for a positive outcome in many situations, and the ADHD or BPD stereotype of being "quirky" or "fun" does hold SOME merit. Other conditions also can have positives, some schizophrenic patients may live in a delusion that's peaceful and joyous. Autism can be linked to very high intelligence or proficiency in the case of savant syndrome. Neuroatypical minds tend to be more creative. And without psychotic symptoms many artists would not have had the inspiration to fuel their art, such as van gogh. I would love to see a video explaining why and how these positives can occur (perferably for each one [more perferably for each of mine]) And I think many people would find information on how to reframe their diagnosis' and utilize the tools that they can provide, to compensate for all the crap that they cause. (E.g. the percentage of ADHD in those that start their own business is higher than in the general population)

Hi @callum farley I know you really want this from me as I've seen you suggest this before. Knowing the percentage of people with ADHD who start businesses is a different kind of research and reporting than educating people on the nuances of mental issues and psychological concepts - which is what my channel is about. What you ask for is great to know and there are probably already videos talking about this. Check out How to ADHD, she speaks from a personal perspective as well as other info about ADHD. She may already have such a video or be willing to make one since the info seems to align well with the content she's already producing.

@@DrTraceyMarks @Dr. Tracey Marks thank you for taking the time to reply! Your channel is one of the main reasons why I decided to go into a career in metal health. :) I know these channels well and they're great! The reason why I use examples like the ADHD business starter link is because there is, for obvious reasons, very little research into the positives from a neurological/psychological stand point. ADHD aside, It may be more relevant to ask, for example, how to treat a patient who values their positive symptoms? And the neuro/psychological reasons behind them. Regardless, keep the videos coming, yours is the only channel using the clinical literature that presents it in an interesting, entertaining way while prioritizing the science.

@@tazclnsts7093 actually, a study in the journal Thyroid found that thyroid hormone was contained in many tested ashwaganda supplements. This channel rejected the link I posted, so here’s the abstract text: ThyroidVol. 23, No. 10 Original Studies Thyroid Dysfunction: Hypothyroidism, Thyrotoxicosis, and Thyroid Function Tests Thyroxine and Triiodothyronine Content in Commercially Available Thyroid Health Supplements Grace Y. Kang, Jonathan R. Parks, Bader Fileta, Audrey Chang, Maged M. Abdel-Rahim, Henry B. Burch, and Victor J. Bernet Background: As defined by the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act 1997, such substances as herbs and dietary supplements fall under general Food and Drug Administration supervision but have not been closely regulated to date. We examined the thyroid hormone content in readily available dietary health supplements marketed for “thyroid support.” Methods: Ten commercially available thyroid dietary supplements were purchased. Thyroid supplements were dissolved in 10 mL of acetonitrile and water with 0.1% trifloroacetic acid and analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography for the presence of both thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) using levothyroxine and liothyronine as a positive controls and standards. Results: The amount of T4 and T3 was measured separately for each supplement sample. Nine out of 10 supplements revealed a detectable amount of T3 (1.3-25.4 μg/tablet) and 5 of 10 contained T4 (5.77-22.9 μg/tablet). Taken at the recommended dose, 5 supplements delivered T3 quantities of greater than 10 μg/day, and 4 delivered T4 quantities ranging from 8.57 to 91.6 μg/day. Conclusions: The majority of dietary thyroid supplements studied contained clinically relevant amounts of T4 and T3, some of which exceeded common treatment doses for hypothyroidism. These amounts of thyroid hormone, found in easily accessible dietary supplements, potentially expose patients to the risk of alterations in thyroid levels even to the point of developing iatrogenic thyrotoxicosis. The current study results emphasize the importance of patient and provider education regarding the use of dietary supplements and highlight the need for greater regulation of these products, which hold potential danger to public health.

Forgot to mention that ashwaganda also is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The name is written in Pin Yin as Nan Fei Zui Jia. After getting it as part of my acupuncture treatment for fatigue, after a few months I ended up in the ER with thyrotoxicosis. My acupuncturist wasn’t aware it could have an additive effect with the thyroid hormone I was taking. After I stopped the Chinese herbs, acupuncture and thyroid hormone, I gradually returned to normal. Interestingly, my thyroid function had improved permanently, so when I resumed my thyroid hormone the dose was cut about in half - this has lasted 20+ years. I have idiopathic hypothyroidism, not the more common autoimmune Hashimoto’s.

Hello Dr.Tracey, I’ve watched your videos and see that you seem to be very knowledgeable about mental health. I’ve tried to piece some of your videos together to find the answer but have not been successful so perhaps you may be able to answer this question for me. I know that people say to think of mental health the same way you think about physical health, yet if someone die due to a physical ailment it is understood but if someone dies by suicide due to a mental illness everyone seems to make it seem so bad ( if someone dies by cancer people often say they fought a good fight and they were tired, well can’t a person with mental illness feel the same way. I once heard a doctor say that thinking about suicide is not normal. If we gonna take the stigma off mental illness then it should be 100% not 50%. You’ve talked about medication and there not being a cure and living with mental illness on and off medication , what about just being tired of mental illness. Thank you
