Bonus introvert tip: shoot photos of people’s reflections in windows, mirrors, anything shiny. Starting out I couldn’t bring myself to take photos of strangers so reflections were my go to. It’s much easier because the camera is never pointed at the person.

Bonus bonus tip: shoot with a pancake lens or a pocketable camera (like in the thumbnail). The smaller your camera the less you will stand out to a crowd. A big telephoto lens will let you get further back, but it’s also a giant item that everyone will see.

@@RolandKaufmann bonus bonus bonus tip 😄 : if you have a screen that flips so that it can be at 90 degrees with the body, ie for you to look down at, you can hold your camera around waist level and just shoot as you walk as if you weren't even taking pics! The random results might even be better than expected 😏 Re the telephoto lens, I have been meaning to try that too, liking the idea of being able to reach details from a distance without that person noticing but also daunting as everyone closer will notice the massive thing! 🤔😔

@@jonathanpivot164 yes very good tip as well! I sometimes tilt the screen like you say and use the tap to focus/shutter to take the picture. Not having your finger on the actual shutter button is pretty stealthy haha. Telephoto is really cool for street! It definitely has its pros and cons though.

@@RolandKaufmann oh yeah I didn't even think about triggering from the screen with your left hand while inconspicuously walking around, great tip! Will try telephoto someday for sure ;)

Great tips! Im an introvert and relatively new at doing street photography here in tokyo. What I discovered with my 2 months of doing pov street photography is that i always struggle to take my camera out from my bag. I always get so hyper self aware. But once I build up the courage to get my camera from my bag, I always end up fulfilled even if my photos weren’t that good. The comment section is also filled with great bonus tips!

I like the fact that you showed a real time street walk in challenging conditions because there are too many street photography videos in cool places e.g. New York, Tokyo... where there is a shot to be taken on every corner but in reality it's not that easy. I actually find the same struggles in my hometown - Sofia where you really have to put an effort to find interesting compositions, people, details etc.

Shoot with 85mm-105-135mm lens. But the best is just to get into rythm. Use a 50/85mm so you can be a bit further away, listen to some music and find good compositions, locations and just do some candid photos. First 5-10 image will feel weird but after that you will get into the flow

Extremely helpful tips! Thank you MSL. focusing on frame and letting your subject walk through it is a golden tip! In Nigeria they stop and wait for you to finish or walk around you in that case sadly.

Never make eye contact, look beyond the subject. Sometimes I keep the camera held out in front of me as if I’m shooting a video, which people find less threatening.

Additional tips: 1) Don't carry a canon-sized camera; something smaller and inconspicuous will do for the introvert. 2) Not so much pavement in your street photos (you don't have to take "street) literally). 3) Set your camera to take both black and white and color (RAW); devote one day to color, the next to b&w. 4)Try different times of day, i.e., different times of light. 5) Try different themes or points of focus: shadows, body parts, reflections, inside/outside, outside/inside, mirrors, up/down, down/up, only backs, only lower body (feet, shoes), animals, water, garbage, lights and signs, store fronts, cars, etc. Unnumbered: move to a city that has people in the street at all times of day.

00:33 📸 Expect to capture only a few good shots in several hours of street photography due to its unpredictable nature. 01:09 🤫 Utilize techniques like waiting for subjects to enter the frame or using silent shooting mode to minimize interactions while shooting. 01:53 📷 Consider using waist-level viewfinder cameras for a stealthier approach reminiscent of Vivian Meyer's style. 02:10 🙋‍♂ Asking for permission to take photos can sometimes be easier and more respectful than shooting candidly without consent. 07:28 📸 Practice and persistence can help you become more comfortable and confident with street photography over time.
