Street Photography at Night: Tips and Tricks for Better Images

In this week's photography tutorial, I show the best tips, tricks, ideas and settings I use for street photography at night. The city streets are full of amazing opportunities for photography and I love spending time taking in the atmosphere of Edinburgh after dark.
I show what I look for in my street images, from how I find compositions, where I go, what settings I use on my camera through to how to take amazing long exposures of car headlights.

    Contrary to a few other's comments, i think you picked the perfect music for your video. It adds to the "nighttime" ambience. Im a dark or nighttime photographer also, for all the reasons you stated in your video. Great job.

    Thanks! I think that's why I like it too. I think the figure makes it overly complicated as a scene whereas there's a nice simplicity without it.

    Very good moments of visual harmony, as I'd call it, where is all comes together. In regard to tricks shots, and special visual effects, I can work if not overdone, but once seen the effect wears off over time. The magical moment is precious and rare, so yes, you shoot fast and must be prepared at all times. One must be prepared to kick themselves when the do the image wrong, or you are a simply out of position -- that's life. But when you get the gift shot, you do say yes! Yes! Your video is well done. Thank you, Loren

    Nice video with great tips! I love the way you anchored many of the compositions around lamp posts and islands of light in the dark. Nice use of music as well. It worked well with this video where it helped the story of you venturing into street photography at night.

    Another great video Andrew. This is an area I've never tried as I long in a rural town which doesn't provide many opportunities. However, I'll try to give it a go next time I'm in Sydney. As for your images, I loved the b&w one of the guy on the bridge with the rim light.

    Thanks so much! Sometimes smaller towns can provide great opportunities (I grew up in a small rural town in the UK, though I imagine it's very different in Australia!). Definitely give it a try in Sydney though! Thanks for watching

    Now I’m planning on heading into Galway this evening to give this a whirl. Mostly your fault Andrew😂 great video and thanks for the ideas.

    Nice video...How do you choose the aperture in the night? I mean, is there any particular reason not to prefer 1.8 to 8 or 8 to 11, in case of tripod ?

  • @AndrewLanxonPhotography

    @AndrewLanxonPhotography

    4 ай бұрын

    Thanks! Mostly it's wide open to let in more light and use faster shutter speeds when hand held. For long exposures on a tripod it was about f8 for maximum sharpness.

    Not really, possibly because the lens was quite small. Also if helps that it was night time and in busy areas so I didn't really stand out much. Still, there were some people I didn't feel comfortable photographing so I kept my camera hidden.
