Street Glide: How it Influenced the Industry and Changed the "Bagger Game" Forever

The price of the Street Glide at 23 to 27 thousand, keeps a lot of younger buyers out of the market. Oddly, H.D. makes the police version which is now a Street Glide without the lowered rear shocks and without the radio/nav that's thousands less. and comes with the 114 motor for 2019. In fact, police agency's buy those bikes for about 17500 to 18500. If H.D. offered that bike to the public, I believe they'd sell a hell of lot more bikes to the younger buyer.

Well said jerry I opt for the e-glide standard for the simple fact it didn’t cost me 25-30k all at once most of the factory stuff ended up on eBay anyways i.e. seat, suspension, handlebars, the usual haha

The electraglide standard is $18,999. It is a street glide with no radio/ navigation system and speakers and polished aluminum instead of chrome.

I completely agree and saw these progressions throughout that timeframe. I started at the dealership in sales at the end of 2004. Back then we were taking an FLHT and putting on a cool seat like the Badlander, that short smoke windshield, and pulling all the excess trim. They didn’t always get a radio, but you looked good going down the road. The motor company has made some great changes since 2006, and hopefully they maintain being influential to the industry. I think they are headed in the right direction. Great video Matt. As much as I enjoy the riding and product reviews, this one is at the top of the list. Keep it up!

There’s something special about Harleys that you can’t replicate. The competition may have better features, ie: bmw’s bagger(big hp, keyless locks, suspension, power windshield) but no one else can give you that special feeling. And Harley is catching up/on(bout time), but I don’t think Harley will lose very many customers to the competition. No me anyway. What I wish we could do is go into a dealer and order a bike from the factory the way I want it(color, chrome or black trim, wheels, seat, ext:), not have to buy a “stock” bike and Then pay a lot to customize it.

Matt, I think you hit the mark here on a lot of points. I'm in the process of bringing my '09 Low Rider closer to what I want, one piece at a time (like the ol' Johnny Cash song). You're getting to the point where you could hook up with a crew and shoot feature length. There's such an incredible amount of local HD history, across the country, that has yet to be told. Also, I loved the comic relief of that Honda commercial... it probably looked cool as a storyboard, but to me it just looked like the poor dude couldn't find his way out of that shipping yard. Rat in a maze, crashing through piles of debris. In fact, I think I'll rewind and watch it again.... Good stuff brother!

I really enjoyed this video. I made a huge mistake back in 2009 by renting an FLHX and I've wanted one ever since. Before that ride in Las Vegas I couldn't picture myself on a Harley Davidson. The styling of the FLHX is what drew me in, and it was the rideability and comfort which haunt me to this day. Be well and God Bless.

I think people are forgetting the Electra Glide Standard, which was essentially the Street Glide before the Street Glide was born. It was Harley's best value ever and the perfect blank canvas to build your own touring/non-touring scooter. Was a sad day when they eliminated it and shifted to the Street Glide.

It was when HD started to go "Yuppified".... Take an Electraglide Standard, call it a "Street glide" and charge an extra $5000.....the yuppies, RUBs, and posers will be all over it! Now we need to put a 52" front wheel on a RoadGlide.....that will really be a hot seller. These pukes don't even ride their bikes....lol I hope they all get hit by a bus. Maybe the price of a new HD will drop if they move on to the next "fad"..

I own the last Electra glide standard produced. In the last year ( 2010) it was still available in Bleu color here in Europe. So I bought one. The last one sold in the USA was in 2009. For the last 15 years the standard is my bike. It was cheap, no stupid radio or GPS on board. Just a great riding bike. The Street glide is much lower, no rear crash bars, no fender tips and a tiny little windscreen. Nice for around town cruising. To bad the FLHTI is not available anymore.

Hey Matt, I'm originally from Milwaukee but moved to SW Florida in 2013. In 2005 I bought an Electra Glide classic. I put on fairing mounted mirrors and ordered the detachable tour pak quick release kit and a smoked chopped windshield. A lot of my riding buddies were doing the same thing at the time. Six months later, BOOM! The street glide was born. I kept my bike until Jan. 2020, she was a great bike for me but I just bought a new FLHXS and loving it. Still putting miles down at 66 years old!

Great video. I did exactly what you are talking about with my 06 FLHTcpi then bought a new streetglide in 18 when she got creamed by a cager. By the end of 07 I had chopped the stuff I didn't like off, popped on some SG mirrors. I don't remember it being a 5 speed but that could be memory, or because it was a cpi or just from being an old bastard and not remembering upgrading to a 6 along with all of my other upgrades and she was exactly what I wanted. It was nice to go into my local shop and pick up a brand spanking new 18 FLHX and it WAS what I had with my 06 FLHTcpi but better, faster, stronger, more comfortable and all around just more badassed out of the box. I am gonna do some minimal performance (and SOUND) upgrades on her when I get some change in my pocket but all around, Matt, I think you hit this like a framer on a nail with this historical look back. Keep up the good reports.

Great video Matt. I've had Road Kings in the past, with my last being an awesome 2017 RK Special in olive gold. Hated to give it up, but was offered a deal that I couldn't refuse on a 2019 Street Glide CVO, black forest & wineberry. I've had it for only a week, but I'm loving it so far. Thought I was going to buy a Road Glide Special, but after riding both, I realized that the Street Glide fit me better. The CVO is badass! Just installed my Yaffe 12" monkey bars & waiting on Rinehart slip-ons to arrive. There's nothing like riding a Harley! Keep up the good work.

Matt, thanks again for your take on thinks. I'm new to motorcycling community and your channel has been very valuable to me in learning more about Harley Davidson. Your observations I think are dead-on just in my couple of years of experience. The street glide to me is a dyna with a little more conveniences. The low lines and front fairing top with the nice looking rear, well let's just say it's no wonder we are attracted to them! I'm still in the low rider phase of my riding evolution. But the street glide will most likely be next!

Welcome to the motorcycle community. Thanks for the positive comment about my videos. Yup, every Harley rider eventually gets to the touring chassis. Enjoy your Low Rider phase though.

I totally agree with you Matt, hence I traded in my 2018 flhxse for the new 2019 Chrome version flhxse I love the retro Harley-Davidson at the bottom of the Bags and 117ci not to mention the new upgraded GTS infotainment radio! For me it’s all about performance!! I will be up grading my suspension and adding a better cam & tuner and man I’m all set! P.S. loved the video Matt.. Thanks for sharing!!

Hey Matt, great take on a little history, I had a 2008 Electra glide classic with detachable tour pack, two bikes in one. That was the thing back then. Driving a 2014 cvo limited now. Who knows what the future will bring.

I'm a motorcycle enthusiast and now have a 2017 FHLTK in my stable. I immediately put a 4 point docking system and a street glide rear fender and seat for most days of riding. When on extended trips, being able to quickly put the tour-pac and plush seat on for two-up touring are welcoming, let alone having those heated grips! It's the best of both cruising/touring worlds. I agree with your thoughts regarding performance suspension. H-D parts department would be served well with suspension upgrades for existing bikes. I'd love to see inverted forks with electronic suspension for preload and comp/dampening adjustments on the fly, it's a feature I miss from my Yamaha FJR. H-D has the engine upgrades down, now let's see stage 1-2-3-4 suspension kits. Great work Matt!

Being a relatively new Harley owner, I really like to learn about Harley and the market thoughts behind the model changes. Future directions- wish they would add more technical stuff like selectable ECM maps for the touring (rain mode, economy mode, aggressive mode, etc.).

Matt, I am Road King fan and always thought that less is better. But I got to say that the Street Glides have a very appealing style. Thanks for sharing
