Street Cat Bob memorial statue unveiled by James Bowen
Only a handful of people could be there on the day, but you can watch James Bowen unveil a moving tribute to Street Cat Bob here.
A memorial to Street Cat Bob - featuring a life-size statue - has been opened in London, and The Big Issue can bring you exclusive video from the ceremony.
James Bowen unveiled the moving tribute to the cat who helped him overcome homelessness and addiction.
“This means a lot to me,” said James, addressing the small gathering of fans in Islington Green. “I know it means a lot to all of you guys. Everybody here has a story to tell about how much Bob means to them. I don't have any way I could ever express how grateful I am to commemorate this amazing little man.”
James said that it was a “cathartic” day, adding: “Bob is forever a part of Islington. We’ve made our mark on this place. And Bob has definitely earned it. I'm proud of him.”
Tanya Russell, the sculptor of the tribute to Street Cat Bob, said she had been nervous about the unveiling.
“It's such an important sculpture. It’s portraying a story that is so important to so many people,” she said.
“The fans have so much love for Bob and James. It was really important for me to try and capture the real essence of Bob.”
Due to Covid restrictions, only a handful of people were able to be there to see Street Cat Bob’s statue revealed.
Among them was Angela Binns, who said she’s been following the story of Street Cat Bob and James Bowen for years.
“I think the statue’s wonderful,” she said. “It’s a good likeness, especially the way the eyes seem to be looking straight at you. Bob had such wisdom in his eyes.”

Sobbing here. Glad someone put forth the effort to make this memorial. Hope that it brings meaning to many.
Beautifully done memorial. The bench will allow people to pause and reflect rather than rush past it.
I had a cat very much like Bob, he was my best mate, he slept on my bed, he followed me everywhere I went, he loved coming with me to my allotment, he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge many years ago and I miss him a lot. I can well understand James' love for Bob.

A fitting tribute to Bob the street cat. James and Bob’s story touched many lives all around the world and has inspired people and helped homeless cats. The statue is an excellent likeness and will mean a lot to cat lovers and tourists alike. 😻🐈😻

My eyes got wet. I watched the movie, which showed the true love between James and Bob. May his soul rest in peace.
You can see the pain all over James' face, he's clearly still grieving over the loss of his dear friend. :( I just hope knowing the joy Bob brought to so many people, and the love they have in their hearts for him can bring him some comfort. The statue is beautiful, and a wonderful tribute to Bob. ❤️🌈

I stumbled across the film A Street Cat Named Bob in 2018 and I have followed their story together ever since. Both James and Bob immediately crept into my heart, and I cried for weeks when I heard that Bob had died 😭 This is the most beautiful tribute, and a wonderful gift of recognition for Bob and James. I cried all over again watching this. My heart still aches for you, Dear James........ I have the ashes of my second cat. My third cat who passed peacefully in my lap at age 19 in 2019 is buried next to his dog sister in the backyard. My two beloved cats now help me through a lot of things just by existing.
Awwww James' first reaction was to try and ruffle Bob's ears and the back of his neck. He and Bob had a very special relationship, Bob was meant for James, his love for his cat (and the love of his cat for his human) and determination to keep him against all the odds, the film A Christmas Gift from Bob is worth watching and shows how difficult it is for an addict to recover, for the love of his cat he did. James now has two kittens, you never forget or stop loving, you just extend your pet family (whether that's cats, dogs, rabbits etc;)

I was so sad when I heard bob had passed away. He was an icon to me and so many of my friends. While bob helped my friends out of drug addiction, the little orange wonder helped me get over my severe depression. I owe it to James and bob for seeing through my darkest moments.

I cried watching this, cause I remember reading the book, and my cat means so much to me as well. When we got our cat my dad was dying from cancer and he basically made our lives so much better in a time of need, and even to this day he makes my life so much more worth while, especially when I'm feeling down or things aren't going the way they seem.

So happy for James and Bob's friendship and time together. I'm happy the statue was created as commemoration. It is a fitting tribute to their time together and to the memory of Bob, a special cat. Soon after adopting my first cat I discovered James' books. Whilst reading about his life with Bob, my opinion of homeless changed forever, even though I have been very close to the situation myself. Deep down we all believe it happens to someone else right? Yet anyone could become homeless from whatever cause, enviromental, economic, or just a situational breakdown. Yes everyone deserves a second chance, both human and animal, and especially those willing to seek the hand up, over the hand out. :)
