I'm a bit late here, but I'm not amazed. I am, but I'm also not, if that makes sense. Strasburg is the only place in the continental U.S.A I am aware of that runs steam locomotives every day like was done in the olden days of steam. I believe even the Union Pacific, the class one railroad worth billions, doesn't run 844 and 4014 with anything close to the demands of Strasburg. I also remember somewhere that 844 was sent to Strasburg for work even the Union Pacific didn't have the skilled workers for. The last time I was there, Disney had an engine or two in there for a complete overhaul. A complete overhaul. The crew could have put 475 through a brick wall and within a week or two it would have been operating like nothing happened.

@@vwbubs1170 It's not so much they are good at repairs, it's just that they try to hold themselves to the same standards of an old school production steam shop. They have to be this good, as they use steam daily. They even have freight traffic.

oops thanks for pointing that out this video was rushed after the go one got removed sorry for the inconvenience
Hoo-boy! That's on the engineer & fireman. Engine crew are required to watch the road ahead and verbally confirm with each other for obstructions and misaligned switches as well as control signals. Just like driving a car, keep your eyes on the road. This is one of the first things we are taught in engine service. The person who left the switch misaligned also bears culpability. When not in use, switches are to be left aligned for primary traffic/main line, not sidings/storage track. And they are VERY lucky! It looks like the blast pipe and excavator hydraulic cylinders & arm angle prevented the excavator arm from going into the flue sheet; looks like the top knuckle of the excavator arm stopped right under the stack. This accident could otherwise have ended with a boiler explosion.
@vwbubs1170
Жыл бұрын
there very lucky they didn't get hurt! and they should have focused on the track more.
@CrisisHedgehog
Жыл бұрын
Wait how could they tell if the switch was aligned or not… both sides of that switch are white… I may be missing something here but there would be no indication about the alignment of the switch you have to be extremely close up to it to notice it. If it wasn’t so simple to see it the one the passengers call it out?
@bw4t
Жыл бұрын
@@CrisisHedgehog The target on the switch (the four fins on top of the switchstand) has different colours, typically yellow and green. It the points are lined for the siding or storage track, the yellow target will be visible to traffic. If the points are aligned for primary traffic, then the green target will show. The target can be seen from several hundred feet away. The white thing seen in the video is a sign of some sort, and based on its placement may well have partially obstructed the view of the target: www.google.com/maps/@40.0049547,-76.1130277,2a,15y,315.15h,75.93t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sYOe94a73SkmpUNyuZfPdRA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3DYOe94a73SkmpUNyuZfPdRA%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile.gps%26w%3D203%26h%3D100%26yaw%3D117.82379%26pitch%3D0%26thumbfov%3D100!7i13312!8i6656 Secondly, the alignment of the switch points themselves can easily be seen from the engine by both engineer and fireman from at least 100 feet away, which is more than enough time for an engine running light at low speed to stop. Also, the engineer was apparently operating at faster than the timetable's Restricted Speed rules.

Somehow, even when the front section of the locomotive was obliterated, no steam or smoke came out. Maybe unless the smokebox is just a covering for the funnel.

Everyone is at fault here, a misaligned switch can be spotted if the engineers and conductors were paying attention. The rail maintenance crew failed to realign the switch after storing their hi-rail machine. Complete complacency on all party’s part. Glad everyone is ok though.
