Why N&W 475 was in Thomas & The Magic Railroad

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Thomas & The Magic Railroad has a lot of mixed opinions. But for me, it's definitely my favorite Thomas movie. Anyway, many have taken notice of the appearance of Strasburg Railroad, more specifically Norfolk & Western 475. This locomotive appears as the Rainbow Sun train for the Indian Valley Railroad in Shining Time. But the question is, why was 475 chosen over the original representative being Union Pacific 844? And why was 475 chosen over any of Strasburg's other steam locomotives? Well, here's how that happened.

    This was really interesting! I had no idea that's why 475 was chosen. Considering you mentioned it, I'm surprised you didn't talk about how the reason 844 didn't "Reprise" its role as the Rainbow Sun was because it was out of service due to a flue failure that occurred earlier that year

    Good point. Not to mention that 844 is a much larger locomotive with associated greater operating costs, renting it for filming would probably have been much more expensive. • @jamesgroccia644

    @jamesgroccia644

    3 жыл бұрын

    I think it has something to do with sugar combining with #10’s air-fuel mixture and seizing up his engine. To quote Alec Baldwin from that scene, “I dump this [sugar] in your tank it’ll seize you up for good!” But I’m not too well-versed in the science behind the railroads; I’m in it for the steamers.

  • @quillmaurer6563

    @quillmaurer6563

    3 жыл бұрын

    My guess is it's sort of like James speculated, I know that there's at least a myth that sugar in a vehicle's fuel tank will destroy the engine. Though I've seen numerous tests, including by Mythbusters, that debunked that, didn't seem to bother the engine at all. Though that was with gasoline engines, it might be more problematic for diesels. Maybe it gunks up the unit injectors and blocks fuel. If so, the movie could have explained that better, it doesn't seem like something that would be obvious to kids, or really to anyone. It also seems implausible for that to be a serious threat to Diesel 10 as Mr. Conductor would have to remove the fuel cap and dump probably a very large quantity of sugar (enough to sufficiently contaminate thousands of gallons of diesel fuel) into a sentient diesel locomotive with a murder-claw on the roof. If he could have done that to Diesel 10, there's plenty of other stuff he could have done (fuses? You won't be needing these!) I don't think just throwing a bag of sugar at him could have done anything.

    @@thesilversignal True, it all depends on how we theorize their world works, which is pretty ambiguous and at times inconsistent (Magic Railroad the locomotives can operate themselves and are usually driverless, while most other Thomas renditions they have to be driven by people, in fact several times they have run away and been unable to stop themselves). But again, good luck pouring a large quantity of sugar into the mouth (which presumably could be closed) of a sentient locomotive with murder claw on the roof.

    I've always loved that movie growing up! I knew Amtrak was significantly involved in the making of this film, but I had no idea they were as involved as they were. Can't say I'm surprised though. I've heard rumors about there potentially being a remake of this movie. If that's the case and they plan to use Strasburg and the Keystone Corridor again, I certainly wonder how that's going to go over with Positive Train Control, of course that is if anything has yet been done to the Keystone regarding PTC.

I also noticed the p40dc in the window reflection and came up with a head-canon for why it’s there. My theory is that 475’s “rainbow sun” train is actually a ferry train taking passengers from Harrisburg to Strasburg railroad’s Shining Time Station. The station at Harrisburg is owned by Amtrak hence the P40dc but they allow the Rainbow Sun special access to the station’s far-right platform

    Fun Fact: strasburg 90 only made a single trip off railroad in its Strasburg owned career. It served as lead loco in a excursion in 1968, with the normal 2 G5s used by High Iron Company being used in emergency service to heat Reading when the steam company suffered a failure, Steamtown 127 took the train solo from Jersey City to Bethlehem PA where 90 was hitched on the front to help the train climb over to Ashely PA. On the down hill run 90 derailed forcing the train to stop and for help in form of a RSD-4 to arrive from the helper track. Bringing the train into town. They ran around after wyeing the power and the RSD lead giving a triple header back up (struggling as was 127 but 90 faired well) and they successfully completed the trip dropping 90 at Bethlehem for servicing before running light back to Strasburg. Considering the fact it derailed on a line that did run 2-10-0s for a time being it probably contributed to the fact it was not sent off road again.

    I remember watching this when i was 9 and only last year i finally went to Strasburg from my home in Tennessee and realized after that the engine that pulled the train i was on looked familiar with one a few months ago i remembered that it was the same as from TATMR.

    Pennsylvania has had so many movies filmed here. Witness staring Harrison Ford was also filmed in Strasburg (the farm) train station scenes in Philadelphia. The Pay Phone Scenes and Street fight scene all right near Kitchen Kettle Village. I took photos of the street and houses scene in that scene and also Zimmermans store with the pay phone booth still up on the porch in 2017. The Village by M. Night filmed one more county over along Cossard Rd. The village was built in that field. Rocky of course mostly filmed in Philadelphia as well for many of the series. Pittsburgh and surrounding areas used by Grorge Remoro for his Zombie films. Most notably the Monrovillr Mall for Dawn of the Dead.

    A very informative video about #475's history as well as her appearance in TATMRR. It's interesting enough since I loved seeing the Strasburg Railroad on my childhood train VHS and DVDs, and it's quite unique how they chose Strasburg (and Harrisburg) for the filming of the movie. The railroad was also used as segments for the 10 Years of Thomas in the same year of filming for MRR in 1999. Also, there's one question I need to ask if you don't mind. I have seen three of your episodes of your original Thomas series, and I really enjoyed them (particularly Tourist Trap). But would there be more episodes soon? Just asking.

    I also seem to remember that, in a coloring book they released with T&tMR that my mom bought for me when I was little, there was a difference. Instead of 475 the coloring book used 90's number with 475's body. I always thought this was weird as a kid. I presume now it was because 90 was easier to print than 475 since they could make the numbers bigger in the book, but that always bugged me having been to Strasbourg many times. Anyone else know of this?

    How interesting 🤔 I have always enjoyed TATMR as a kid, and as an Aussie I wasn’t familiar with the American shining time. But one quest I’ve always had was what steam engine was that. Now, my question has finally been answered by the legend himself Good job mate

    475 was the only steam locomotive in the 90s to travel to Harrisburg's old Pennsylvania RR's old Harrisburg passenger terminal. The last engine was there was Reading 2102 in the 80s.

    For like $400 Strasbourg RR will let you actually engineer (or be the fireman for about $300) of 475 for about 30 min, going back and forth twice between Paradise and a point just under a mile down the line. You operate the gear changing, throttle, brakes, bell, whistle, and more, all closely supervised of course. I got to experience it for my 18th birthday and it was amazing!
