Precision: you can also go on the roof of the cathedral. It's on the side, there is an entrance. You have to buy a ticket, then you can climb the stairs (you'd better be in good physical condition) and then you have a good view of all the city. When you visit the European Parliament, there is also a rooftop. Don't hesitate to ask how to go there!

What would you recommend for Easter Sunday? That is when my friends and I will be in this beautiful town. We are concerned that most buisiness will be closed.

As a student here and a tandem for Erasmus students, i second this!

As a German from Freiburg I recommend to visit a game of the Racing Club de Strasbourg, the blue and white pride of the city! You'll love the atmosphere when the Blues are taking the field.

I'm living in Freiburg for the next year for school. I can't wait to be in this part of Europe.

I wouldn't ignore the fact that Strasbourg lies right on the edge of the border to Germany. There's even a streetcar crossing the border. Switzerland is also nearby. Explore the beautiful countryside in Alsace ( the Vosges ), Germany ( Black Forest ) and Switzerland ( Jura ).

I'm living in Strasbourg for already 3 years now and I love this city. It is wonderful and I still feel like a tourist here, with so much to see and enjoy. It truly is an amazing place, and all the region around it has much to offer (both in France and in Germany)!

I'm spending this Christmas with my family this year, but usually the shops close earlier and it may also be tougher to book a restaurant, but you'll still have the decorations on and the streets can be calmer so that you can more easily walk around. It is usually rather cold and sometimes it rains, so come prepared! But you'll love it!

Strasbourg is not expensive if you know where to go ;) If you know the right adresses you can't drinks for cheap If you are hungry there are actually sooooooo many different restaurants of all kind for all budgets:) Don't hesitate to ask strasbourg people around:) Sincerly , a Strasbourger

I think the biggest thing to say is that it's neither French nor German but Alsacien You might hear some older folks speaking some kind of germanic dialect, it's not German, it's alsacien The architecture is German but the food and language are from Alsace

I worked 3 years at the musée Alsacien (in the collections). Best years of my life !

Hi, I am from Strasbourg and I really enjoyed your tour. Just a precision, Paris is now 1h45 from there. And finding a place to stay is in fact expensive, but you can eat really good food for little money, just stay out of the touristy restaurants

I live close to Straßbourg (but in Germany) and it's by far my favourit city I've ever been to. I come to Straßbourg literaly every week and I was never bored and always discover new places. For example the new rhine harbor, the German imperial district, the district where the local university is located in (Krutenau). It's so fuckin beautiful. Also a quick tip: In the Gran Rue there is the best record store i've ever been to (33&co)

Mark, a nice trick, the EU parlement move between Brussels and Strasbourg. The hotels near the parlement are very affordable when the parlement is sitting in Brussels.

I was staying with a friend who lives in Zurich, and we decided to take a day trip by train to Strasbourg. It was like a fairytale city. Loved it, but wish we would have had more time. Was able to get tickets for the clock in the cathedral.

@ I don't know because my friend arranged the trip. All I remember is we went from Zurich to Basel, then Basel to Strasbourg

I would recommend a hotel on the German side of the Rhine (Kehl, Offenburg, Durbach) and then visit Straßburg, but return in the evening. Everything is much cheaper there (restaurants, beer...).

Well as a Strasbourg native who's been living here since birth I've got to say : biggest don't is call us Germans. We're alsaciens. Thats neither French nor German. You hear a lot of German because the tramway is connected to Germany and it takes about 15 minutes to get from Germany to Strasbourg. We alsaciens go shop for grocery in Germany because it's cheaper. The German come to Strasbourg because we have famous fashion brands they don't have. Second thing : Mulhouse is the trashcan of elsass, it's just industries, factories and dirt. I don't recommend anyone to go out of their way to visit that city ^^ Besides that, great video and great info!

@@hmmmhmmm6178 I'm 29. But maybe my experience as a hotel manager for 9 years tweaked my relationship to tourists. One thing we can probably agree on is that the Christmas market is a pain in the ass for natives. And I don't think it's a matter of sticks up their asses. It's more à matter of old people having lived through the war and the border changes ;)

Yes, you are alsacians. Geographically/politically your region is part of France and before it was part of Germany. Tuscany is part of Italy and Holland is part of the Netherlands etc etc. However, I have to say that the architecture of Strasbourg/Strassburg is rather German and, more precisely, originates from Southern Germany. Many names of people and places throughout your region are of German origin and many aspects of culture are German from the outset as well. No, I am not a nationalist and I really love Strasbourg/Strassburg, but what is true is true and has to be said. Best wishes!

Maybe its because I'm from a notoriously rainy part of Europe that I love European cities on a wet winters evening. Its something to do with the buildings lit up from the inside shining in the gloom that makes them so beautiful and welcoming. That shot of the square you showed a few times made me so wimsical.

I lived in Strasbourg for a year. Best year of my life. I miss it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Ah - we need to go back - it’s a heritage town as my grandfather was Alsatian (my great/great uncle was a Bishop of the cathedral!) - my don’ts are “don’t forget the Tour de France goes through here (at least it used to, and it makes for a bit of inconvenience) and be prepared and fit if you climb the cathedral stairs to the top!

Not alone Bergheim, or Obernai !! almost all the villages on the "Route du Vin" are worth a visit, from Marlenheim to Thann, over a distance of 170 km .... And along the way, you can still visit Mt Sainte Odile and the Haut-koenigsbourg castle, each time with a unique view of the Alsace plain and the neighboring Black Forest (Schwartzwald), in Germany, which side of the Rhine plain, parallel to Alsace, with also pretty picturesque towns, villages and landscapes . And so you can also pay a visit to our dear German neighbors of Baden Württemberg !!

Totally agree with the Alsatian museum, it's amazing ! And also : yes if you stay a week and are an art lover, don't forget to spend a day in Basel, they have amazing museums and it's a beautiful city About tour groups... about them... You, Wolter, and independant tourists, families, friends group, are way more important to us in Strasbourg, we love y'all ! But tour groups... I used to live in Petite France (now I'm just a few blocks away) and heard every day the false informations given by tour guides, and worst than that : the school with signs saying "no photo of the kids" were never respected, and guides never made that respected... A big group of people is always more stupid, people follow each other and are not looking around to interact with actual inhabitants or other tourists... Also : tour groups at the market interrupting us making our groceries, tour group in front of the entrance door of my building, tour groups in the middle of the bike paths, tour groups preventing you crossing the streets, tour group everywhere. And not spending any money in our hotels or restaurants.

I wants to visit Strausborg so bad. My great grandmother’s family are French Huguenots who fled France to Charleston SC from strausborg. Thanks for the videos!

If you want better value for price fast foods : go near the central train station or krutenau-esplanade (near the campus). The central island os crowded by tourists, they don't even think about elsewhere

It's a mix actually.

Strasburger here. First of all never say to an Alsacian that he is German, it's a very sensitive subject that you don't want to go into (if you hear German on the street it's the Germans of Kehl that take the tram to go shopping in France hehe). :) Secondly yeah if you go there try Picon-beer it's an institution in North-Eastern France from Lille to Strasbourg. :) And it's a little shame that you only show footage of the city center and Petit France, because these are the tourist place, i'd recommend going in Krutenau as well and North of the center near the Republic's place, if you go further there is the Orangerie Parc which is just beautiful if you want to picnic for instance. :)

Tschuldigung, dass isch falsch ! If you hear German speaking; listen if you hear the difference between German and Alsatian ! A lot of my friends still speak it. Btw, the origins are german until Louis XIV gave the Alsatians the free choice to come under his wings or to be conquered…meanwhile Mulhouse associated with the Swiss Confederation and was attached to France by Napoleon I…

Alsace is a mixed nation with both German and French heritage. However they're their own separate people.

Was in Strassbourg for the first time this summer. I loved it. Beautiful city. If you want to visit the European Parliament IMO you can save yourself some time. Massive building, very nicely decorated but it feels deserted (which most of the time it is). So concentrate on the centre!

One of my ancestors painted the clock. My sister has been there to visit but we haven't been able to fit it in our previous 2 tours of France. Next time for sure! Great video as always

You covered this city well in this short video. I stayed there several days 3 years ago. The weather was the same as you show but it did not dampen my visit. I did not see the clock - I wish I had. Thanks.

I lived in Strasbourg for three months and I agree on every part of the video! It seems difficult for English speakers to be consistent about how to pronounce the name of the city, and it doesn't help that it's pronounced differently in French, Alsatian, and German. However, the first syllable should never be pronounced like "Strauss" and should be either "strahz" or "strahss."

I'm Alsatian : in alsacian dialect,version Strasbourg, you can also pronounce : "SCH" (Schtross- borry 😁😉) . Alsatian is a Germanic dialect , named in French language "Bas Alémanique", and it has become a mixture of French and German with particular intonations. Years ago there was a German version of the local newspaper, and it was written in general German language (Hochdeutsch) .

Cela dit, le dialecte malheureusement se perd peu à peu, car les parents à un moment donné en ont perdu l'usage, et n'ont pas jugé utile de le parler avec leurs enfants ...car ça faisait "populaire" ...... Tss, tsss ...Personnellement, j'ai eu la chance d'apprendre le français et l'alsacien en même temps, puisque mes grands parents étaient entièrement germanophones et mes parents francophones, et l'allemand également car nous avions de nombreux amis et apparentés en Allemagne voisine, puis l'anglais lorsque ma fille a émigré en United Kingdom ... Et ainsi, la culture se perd petit à petit. Mais heureusement, il reste un noyau d'irréductibles, dont je fais partie . Parler plusieurs langues ou dialectes (car le Badisch d'outre-Rhin en est un aussi !!) est une richesse inestimable ... Tschüss, auf Wiedersehen, au revoir and goodbye !! 😁

Please don’t say ‘Strass’ as that’s German. Alsatian is more German than French. The dialect over the border Schwälbisch is close and they can converse. I’ve lived here 22 years in Strasbourg, 21 married to an Alsatian.

A few fun facts: - Proto-Celtic people lived here in 1300 BC, the city was called Argentorate - Romans arrived in Strasbourg in 58 BC and turned it into a military camp. They also brought winemaking to the region - Strasbourg was a free imperial city until 1681 when it became French - Overall Alsace was much much longer French than it was German - Hitler was over the moon when Germany got Alsace back in 1940 - Bretzels are from Alsace - Munster cheese is from Alsace (the real deal, not the Muenster you find in the US) - Gutenberg studied in Strasbourg and invented printing here - Goethe lived and studied in Strasbourg - Alsace has some of the best and most expensive white wines in the world - Alsace has its own language, which is similar to German. Only old people still speak it

Alsace was german from early Middle ages via Holy Roman Germanic Empire, to late XVII with Louis XIV. Alsace was french until 1871 then german until 1919, there was also Reich III (4 to 5 years) during WW2 Actually, it depends what you mean by "german". Overall, Alsace was much much longer germanic than french in its history. You can ad to your list that "la Marseillaise" french national anthem, was written in Strasbourg. Jean Calvin lived in Strasbourg too

We spent three nights in central Strasbourg, late November 2021. The Christmas markets we wonderful. We were in the no car zone, which was great, but also created a few obstacles. Another don’t would be to not miss visiting the small villages south of Strasbourg. Riquewhir is wonderful any time of year. We spent three nights there in October 2007 and really enjoyed visiting again. This year, we will be driving from the Frankfort airport to SW Switzerland. Strasbourg is on the way and we will be stopping.

There is a wonderful large model of the Strasbourg cathedral's clock in the Power House museum in Sydney Australia. It does everything that the original clock does and a little more...

I lived there for 10 years in this beautiful city . Im English and theres so mamy things from the tarte flambé a nice picon bier in the evenings. And the beautiful buildings. Great ciry .

Lived here for 3 weeks for a summer french program. It was interesting. Did you know the OG TGV power car is next to a highway off ramp in the suburbs of the city?! Also the tram system is awesome and another must is to walk around at night. This city was beautiful to explore at night. Especially by the river.

If I was to take a trip back to that area, I'd get an AirBnB/VRBO somewhere between Strasbourg and Freiburg with easy access to rail, and use that as my base for the week. The SNCF has the TER commuter line to Offenburg, which is right on the ICE line to Freiburg, and you're right at the edge of the Black Forest. I took the TER from Appenweier in for Christmas Markets last year. Was wonderful!

What the situation is in the US, as they might put it on a red list so you have to quarantine 2. What the situations are in those countries, as a lot of things may be closed because of covid

.... And do not forget to visit the Wine Cellar of the Strasbourg Hospital "Cave des hospices de Strasbourg" and find, among some huge sculpted oak barrel, a smaller one that is also the oldest in the world, which contains a wine that was kept since 1472. The last who drank a glass out of it was General Leclerc in 1945... This cellar is not just a museum, it is still in use today, and some famous producers from the "route des vins" have their wine kept in Strasbourg by the Hospital.

If you want a smaller version of Strasbourg near Strasbourg you can go to Offenburg for a day or half a day.

Don't forget the Parks like the jardin des deux rives or the parc de l'orangerie which are beautifull places to chill. Also u can think about visting kehl (the german side of the city) or the port du rhin with its beautifull industrial architecture.

We put Strasbourg on our bucket list two years ago because of your older videos about it. Hopefully we'll actually make it there next year

Really awesome city, especially during the christmas period when it reveals all of his potential. The cathedral is wonderful, and the mix of french/german culture make a lot of his charm. And dont forget to taste a bretzel from a good Boulangerie.

I was in Strasbourg for two times. From Germany it is really so close to cities like Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Mainz or Frankfurt. I was inside of the European Parliament with a guide. It was very interesting but only to stand outdoor it is only a round glas house. Strasbourg an the region is famous for "Flammkuchen". This is like a pizza with sour cream, bacon and onions. I think it is origine from there but although popular in Germany and in other parts of central Europe.

Flammekuchen is tarte flambee with an accute accent on the first e. Yes, delicious, with soft cheeses and a choice of toppings.

The St. Denis train station is famously featured by the modern jazz standard "St. Strasbourg St. Denis" by the late Roy Hargrove right after his trip to there. Did I got anything wrong? Anyway, I came here to see what the place actually is like because I have been a fan of this jazz composition for as long as I could remember, really! 😊

Strasbourg - St. Denis is actually an underground station in Paris, not in Strasbourg.

There are also pretty hiking trails through nature and small villages in the Vosges. Lots of small wineries where you can taste wine.

My brother-in-law is from just across the Rhine in Germany. Been there multiple times, it is a lovely city.

Nice memories of our 2019 visit, will return again.

We are planning a trip for 15 days in Europe. We are in love with places like Bruges, Amsterdam and Paris. We are trying to decide where to go. Between Austria, Prague, and Strasbourg. We like to spend a lot of time in one or two places. We love getting to know each city. Can you recommend a city that feels like a fairy tale without being too hot in August?

Closer to the coast like Amsterdam and Bruges is cooler then inland like Paris, Prague, Germany and Alsace.

Great video and very useful for my possible trip there next year! Can you or someone please provide the spelling of that 3-meat deep-dish with potatoes on top at the 1:55 mark? I couldn't get close enough for google to come up with anything useful.

We planned our road trip for last year from Paris-Nancy-Strasbourg-Zurich-Venice-Florence-Rome. Now maybe for next year, maybe later(

Don't bother with Nancy honestly, outside of the Stanislas square (which is the only thing they show you on the pictures, because there's nothing else) the city is ugly as it can be and there's nothing to do around. Doesn't worth nor the time nor the money. You can do Lausanne (Switzerland) or even Annecy (France) which are way more enjoyable places. Then again, you might have personal reasons to go the Nancy, but if you don't, don't be too hyped about it.

I clicked on one of your "don't" videos. I think it was about Luxembourg. I only clicked this one because I have fond memories of a day trip I took by myself to Strasbourg. I was staying in Karlsruhe with my mom's former college roommate. I was in college myself -- this was 30 years ago. I knew you'd have great footage - and I wasn't disappointed. I'm not really a fan of your "don'ts" because they're all really "dos". - Don't miss this. - Don't miss that. - Don't just do this.
