This album is the high water mark of metal for me. There was good metal before and after, but nothing will ever come close. Even now, decades later, ever time I hear it it I'm like, "Fuck me with a chainsaw that's heavy!"

Fun fact: in the game Fallout 3, in one of the underground levels there is a computer terminal and if you switch it on, lyrics from this song appear on the screen as part of an email.

I never knew about Strapping Young Lad until watching a long interview with Gene Hoglan that he did shortly after joining Fear Factory. Funny thing is, I knew who Devin Townsend was, and I loved his DTP and DT bands, but my dumb ass never knew that he was the founder of SYL. Being a fan of Dethklok, and of Gene in general and everything that he does, this interview that he did, he introduced me to a few projects that he was part of that I never knew about. It was that interview where he mentioned, that out of all of the bands that he has had the honor to be a part of, his favorite band to perform with was Strapping Young Lad. He also stated, that if Strapping Young Lad ever wanted to play again and tour, he would drop everything that he was doing just to play with them again. That is when I was introduced to SYL, and I am glad that I was, cause this entire band is bad ass. From the lyrics, to the entire structure of their songs and how well written every piece is, this band was a well done piece of art. How I never knew about them for all of these years, leaves me baffled. After listening to some of their songs, I went out and bought all 4 albums. City, Alien and The New Black are my 3 favorite albums. Each album has it's own forte.

My neighbors often listen to this. And then they always start banging on my door with enthusiasm.

This is an insane masterpiece not for everyone, Devin is a fucking genius. Can't tell how many times this music helped me overcome various shit in life

While this song is technically about an addiction, it is a brutally truthful expression of any deep regret. I have a lot of that which is why this song always touched my soul.

It's good to see that even in the 90's, Devin was concerned for people's health and was giving diet tips. "No gouda, round people..."

City and Chaosphere two of the heaviest albums ever made! Both bands gave me some of the best concert experiences of my life! Miss those days ;(

Incredible industrial thrash metal. I remember the first time I listened to "City" back in 1997 and being totally overwhelmed by it. The angry vocals, the crunchy guitars, the catchy bass, and especially the thundering drums blew me away. It literally sounded like the end of the world. "Detox" is a superb song. It's visceral and brutal, but also quite melodic in its way. Top notch singing by Devin Townsend. I love his screaming. Interestingly enough, "City" was recorded at Steve Vai's studio.

Devin is a champion in person too. Bloody humble guy! Hoglan absolutely kills on this song too

This song was on a metal hammer freebie in 97. I bought the album CITY and was totally blown away. In my mind one of the best heavy metal albums of all time.

I saw Dev last night at an acoustic gig in Bournemouth, and he actually played an acoustic version of this song. He's a fucking mental genius.

Man when i was a teen i spent hours, hours in the cibercafe just to wacth Devin Townsends songs, videos :)

I've been a big fan of thrash for a couple of years, and have explored even the more obscure stuff like Carcass and Annihilator (hardly obscure, I know).... but how have I not heard of these guys!??

"City" certainly is one of the most defining metal records of the 90's, and one of the best metal records of all time.

Of all of the shows I've been to, the mosh pit at a strapping young lad show was by far the most intense. That was a straight up fight and I enjoyed every second of it.

i've spent so long thinking he's shouting "hey hello" and i was like this is a weirdly aggressive way to say hi to someone.

They're chanting "Hey, you Mo" (short for moron), according to Devin's blog years ago.

Heard this song now for first time after 24 fucking years. In 1997 my brother recorded it on MC from radio from some metal chart show and we was listening to it with mouth wide opened. He was strapping young lad but he died that same year and the MC was lost somewhere. Strange memories...

Defining metal.

...I have listened to thousands of Metal albums/songs over the past decades and I still think the riff from 2:54 to 3:56 is one of, if not THE greatest riff ever written/composed.

Strapping Young Lad: Relieving stress since 1995

Got it in a compilation CD from MetalHammer 25 years ago. It blew my mind then, and still it does every single time.

Remember going to see these guys about 8 years ago in Glasgow. Devon came on and jammed a few tracks with Zimmers Hole, then he did a full set with the Devon Townsend Band and then he came on a third time and did the SYL set, Guy has such a phenominal amount of energy. Plus I met my wife at that show. It was an awesome night all round.

Best shout along bit ever: "This is only HIGH SCHOOL BULLSHIT!!"

I remember going to SYL shows here in Vancouver. Townsend would constantly insult the audience between songs. It was hilarious.

So freaking amazing!! This song is seriously legendary... One of the catchiest songs in metal that's for sure! Cool video too.

I remember when I first heard this song I think it was around 96-97 on a metal hammer CD.i couldn't stop listening to it.i bought the CITY cd and was blown away again by Velvet Kavorkian and AHTNF.in my top 10.

How can you say that, Devin is one of those rare artists where every song he makes is unique but nearly every track on his CDS are gold. If you can't listen to them, don't say you like most music, say you like shit music.

This song brings out the primal side of me. I have never had so much adrenaline created from any song, ever. Fucking. Awesome.

It's been 13 years to the day since I got this CD, I saw this video in October of 1998 on Muchmusic, ordered the CD via the record store (this was way before online shopping) and had to wait two months until it finally got to me. Detox is still my top five Devin Townsend songs.

One of the best songs ever, I've listened to this every morning on my way to work for the past 2 months!

God damn this song holds up well. It still slays and always will slay.
