It's "pronounce", not "pronounciate". There is no word "gigant" in English, but if you meant "giant" that would sound to somebody from Germany like "djaiant". There also is the adjective "gigantic" - "djaigantik", the "g" as in "gehen", and the "j" as in the French name "Jean", not as in the German letter "j". I have seen German renderings of the English "g" as "dsch", but that is a not quite accurate rendering, though it would be the closest sound there is in German.

The last syllable sounds like one of the two Yiddish words for penis, the somewhat playful word (a homophone of the English plural of "putt," a non-aerial golf stroke used on the green). More likely is that an old German word remained in Yiddish, but was abandoned in proper German, except possibly as part of a slang term such as the one in this video. In the movie Spaceballs, which has a great deal of Jewish and Yiddish humor, there is a line in which the villain's agents kidnap a doctor on the golf course where he was "working on his putts."

Hi Chippy, It’s hard to tell from your channel but I assume that you are a native English speaker. Also based on your choice of names my suspicion is that you are not from Britain. Yes your statement is correct and it is all in the article ein. We also have a parallel construction to this in American English (perhaps also in British English but I don’t know). If a person says I am danish, we understand that he is saying that he is from the country of Denmark. However if he says I am a danish, he is saying that he is a piece of pastry just as president Kennedy said in Berlin.

Spelunke comes from the greek word spelia or spelaio which means cave. In english you have spelunking or speleology as words.

Thanks so much to the both of you, Trixie and Dana (... not the most important thing, but you two are crazily pretty...). I've been subscribed to both of your channels for some time now. And both of you help a lot to develop my soul. You are wonderful. I'm a "small villager", but I know Munich, Hamburg and Berlin, so this is what I think: Munich: A small German village times 100. Much traffic jam, but all in all the 100 villages compacted to one city. Berlin: Great public transporataion. You get ANYWHERE fast. Whatever you like. The city of Berlin had been imprisoned for some decades. And learned to live with it. Whetever you want: You'll find it in a tight space. Hamburg: Learned to live being the open habour for trade and people for some hundreds of years. This changes the soul of a city quite a lot.

Das ist eher eine Frage des Alters und wie sehr man sich mit der eigenen Sprache beschäftigt. Vielleicht auch eine Frage des Bildungsstandes. Nicht unbedingt was für Leute, die so Sätze absondern wie: "Chantalle, tu mich die Cola...! :-)

Statt "Spelunke" kann man auch "Kaschemme" sagen.

My favourite strange german word is fisimatenten. My grandma used that a lot and it's used as "don't do anything stupid/silly" (it's more playfull so silly is porbably correct). And it's origin is quite intresting, because in the part of germany that was governed by the french the women got invited by the soldiers a lot to "visit their tents" and so from "visitez ma tente" it got to fisimatente. So mothers told their daughters not to do a "visitez ma tente", so not to do anything silly. It's typically used as "mach keine fisimatenten" (don't do any fisimatenten).

I brushed up my English and my German as well! Thanks for introducing "Klumpatsch" into my German Thesaurus.

A cool team-up. Eine tolle Idee, was zusammen zu machen. Ich kannte tatsächlich auch alle, nur was genau Klumpatsch ist, wusste ich nicht mehr genau.^^ Und Brustwarze ist wohl das bekannteste.

+Timo Schulz Kenne Tranfunzel als mit Waltran/-fett befüllte Dochtlampe... Was du beschreibst ist hier Trantüte und leitet sich aus demselben Stamm her... Waltran ist sehr dickflüssig, ergo sehr "langsam".

Vermutlich seid ihr einfach zu jung... Wenn man Großeltern hatte, die zu Beginn des 20. Jhr. oder gar Urgroßeltern die noch im 19. Jhr. geboren wurden, dann hat man sowas aufgeschnappt. Da ich alle meine Großeltern kannte und sogar 2 Urgroßeltern, habe ich noch etliches von denen gelernt. Ich kannte alle Worte, wobei Klumpatsch sehr norddeutsch ist und im Süden eher Gelump(e) gebräuchlich ist.

Ich würde auch "der" Ratzefummel sagen. Was in der Erklärung nicht erwähnt wurde, ist, dass "Radiergummi" und "Ratzefummel" ja mit der selben Silbe anfangen, vielleicht hat das ja auch bei der Entstehung mitgeholfen. So wie man sagt "Schei....benkleister"

Radiergummi/Ratzefummel ist doch genau so wie Nutella! :D Da kann man auch die Nutella und das Nutella sagen... Ich würde z.B. eher das Radiergummi sagen, kenn aber auch viele, die eher der Radiergummi sagen würden... ;)

Schnied could also derive from "Schneid(e)", which is connected to "sword", and "wutz" is also used for children who got themselves dirty, as a name "du wutz!" -> so in that case it could literally be a dirty little sword... quite fitting, don't you think?

Hey Trixi, I am Brazilian and I actually got Spelunke right! In Portuguese we have the same word, however with Portuguese spelling becomes espelunca. But the pronounciation is very similar to German. Really like your videos, especially since I'm trying to learn German.

This was so much fun. Even with me being german and already knowing all the right answers. Hamburg is quite hamburgish. Slightly berlinish in the summer, but far less devastating in the winter. And we have more seagulls here which I like alot. I can't believe you got Schniedelwutz right. WTG
