Just wanted to give a massive thanks to my couch in GhostKumo and PXMacaiah for helping out with commentary for what was a very late run, as well as my lovely host in Phant. Not going to lie, not the best run I've ever done but the event and people around me were a blast and the run was *good* enough despite going over estimate (it's a little better than it looks because the estimate didn't have an adjustment added for the cutscene incentive). Thanks again to Puwexil and the rest of the games committee for having me and I can't wait for the next event.
Something something Chaos something something
I had forgotten about this game but also didn't know it was made by Team Ninja. So, five minutes into the run I had to go buy it, complete it and now I'm back and can enjoy the rest of the run :D
“They are very good at keeping voice actors.” *Tidus laughs in Sephiroth and Zack
[Grunt of acknowledgement]
Speedrunner: Crowd control just doesn't exist. Me: UNLEASH! ULTIMA!
I thought this game was kinds just a meme but watching this speedrun has actually made me sorta interested in checking it out for myself. I liked nioh 1/2 a lot so this is right up my alley. Might have to give this game a shot

Friendly reminder that the developers were expecting people to take this story 1000% seriously... and were actually UPSET that people were meming on it and making fun of it

CHAOS
I died to the first boss about 40 times on normal difficulty. The game is no joke.
Chaos Mode > Extra Mode + Sage Runic Protection = Infinite HP Seems Legit for a Speedrun in the future?
Thing is I'm pretty sure MGSR was MEANT to be ironically good.
Guess I'll give this game a chance after all.
Aside from the overused chaos word this game was actually really good with a fun pre ff1 story
Why was the audio muted for a second near the beginning?

Cause of Frank Sinatra's song "My Way" being used there
Is Axe's charged Brutal Tackle + Lunatic + Damage Buffings a known tactic? I can melt bosses up to Astos Boss much faster with Brutal Tackle. It feels like I'm cheating when I use it...

Berserker’s Brutal Tackle is the strat that the easier difficulty speedruns use to shred through the game It’s not used here, I’m assuming, due to bosses being tanker and dealing way more damage to the player

It's a known thing and used on easier difficulties. Due to the massively increased damage taken, it's a lot riskier on Hard and Swordfighter does very good and consistent DPS due to being able to play so aggressively. It might still be faster, I just haven't dabbled in it as much and stray hits are not unlikely to pop you out of the Brutal Tackle.

Can we please stop referring to everything as a "souls-like" simply because it has... combat? This is a mission based action jrpg... Just about as far as you can get from any of the Souls games. I guess it has a parry-like mechanic?

true, we should call this one a Sekiro-like because of the break gauges

Trust me I hate it too, but this game has a number of shared components that go beyond just being an action RPG thats difficult, such as how sluggish and unwieldy many attack animations and the dodge roll really are which makes actions committal, the potions system being similar to estus flasks, the save and healing points being similar to bonfires in how they work, the fact that the menu doesnt pause the game (though you can pause this one), similar aspects of its multiplayer component, the fact you have to return to the point in which you died to recover resources, and so on. It's a reductive comparison for action games but it's more apt for this one in terms of gameplay style than most. I think Dark Souls is a kinda bad video game overall and so does Ghoul, we wouldn't have made reference to it while on commentary haphazardly.

It was built on Nioh's foundations so it's actually nothing like Souls and instead like that.

Sorry dude but that’s just how certain videogame genres work. Adventure games are named for the game adventure, roguelikes are named for rogue, Metroidvanias are named for Metroid and castlevania, souls-like is just the latest in a long trend of how some genres just get their name. Also yeah souls-like is a gameplay genre. If something is a dueling style animation based action adventure game with basic single player exploration and a focus on balancing offense and defense. Then it is a souls-like

Yeah seriously. This is nowhere near souls like. Souls has that meaty combat where you feel every attack and it really does feel like you are connecting with the enemy when you strike them. . This is that action-arcadey style combat where it's more fantastic and magical. Hitboxes are weird and not nearly as intricate as in fromsoftware souls games. Even nioh had the same problem, the hits just don't feel 'real enough' Best way I can describe it - in souls games, your hits actually 'feel' like they connect with your enemies. In this and nioh, it 'feels' like you're just playing an action game where you're just swinging your pixels at other pixels. It just doesn't have that 'oh shit his sword missed me by an inch' it feels more fantastic and unreal. It's nowhere near the intricate swordplay of from games and especially not anywhere near the inch by inch combat of sekiro or bloodborne.
Amazing how half the dialogue is grunts
