Strange sound of a Raven

Back in January 2016 in Zama City, Alberta. on a very cold day, alone in the middle of nowhere, hanging in my truck. I saw this guy or this girl landing on my mirror and trying to communicate with me. Some people think, he was only hungry, others believe, she was in love with me, it could also be an alien or a robot. Who knows?
One sure thing I was very lucky to lived a little moment of Raven poetry.
-----_-----
"Quoth the Raven “Nevermore.”
And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting".
Edgar Allan Poe

I remember one time some heavy thing has fallen near me in the real world when I was a sleep, and I didn't wake up but instead my dream acomodated the sound by inventing why it happened in the dream. What was really remarkable is that the sound itself lasted maybe 600ms, and in these 600ms my brain built fully believable world how any why this sound occured in the dream, I even felt that I knew about the sound before it happened, because it was too fast, it felt like an anticipation rather than an improvisation.

What I find interesting and absolutely adorable is how the raven, despite looking around and checking its surroundings, always turns its head towards you when it makes a noise. Just like a human would when communicating with another human. Really shows that the crow is trying to communicate with you and it's not just making random noises for the sake of it.

Sorry dude, nice try but I have wild ravens that visit me everyday. I live miles from anyone else out in the boonies and 2 miles from the nearest paved road. They are not mimicking car sounds. These are just some of the sounds in their vocabulary, sometimes they have a sound similar to frogs croaking, geese honking, but i am sure its part of their dialogue from centuries if not longer back. They tend to make these sounds a lot more when they are cold. Much less in summer. I have a feeling they are saying something related to the cold, but after 8 years of daily experience, their language is extremely different from ours and only basic sounds have obvious meanings, like alarm, enemy is close, get out of our territory is pretty clear, calling for attention is just a generalization of what their call means..

And then they switched the national bird out with a swan instead. Guess they thought that a big white bird that invades to northeren countries in summer times, fit better as a national bird.

Awesome! I just love ravens. Once I was at Breitenbush Hot Springs in Oregon, in January, surrounded by old growth forest. I went to the parking lot to get something out of the car. No one was around except for a raven way up in a fir tree. I never saw him. It was making every sound imaginable. Clicks, pops, vrooms, motors, various electronic noises, dripping water and more. I was enthralled and stayed for about 10 minutes just listening. It kept cycling through all of its various sounds. Simply incredible. Someone else mentioned here in another comment that they are more vocal in the winter to help keep warm. Makes sense. It had snowed the night before. This video is now in my Favorites!!

Yes, ravens have an entire repertoire of odd vocalizations and these are among the stranger ones. I’ve often heard the “Prrrrrrrrrrrrrr-DYOONK!” sound in the early spring; I think it might be some sort of mating call. They can also imitate sounds they are repeatedly exposed to, much like myna birds. Years ago when I was a kid, our neighbour across the street from us was the owner of the Volkswagen dealership, and he was driving one of the new Rabbits with fuel injection as a publicity car. Those early fuel injection systems were none too reliable, however, and he would often spend 10 minutes or so in the mornings trying to get his car started for work. One day, I was walking home from school and there was a raven sitting in a tree near his house going, “Err-err-err-err-err-err-weee-weeee-weeee-weeeeee-err-err-err-err!” over and over again! 😂

I can't really explain it, but something similar has happened to me, I think. I gave food to a few crows, ravens because I felt sorry for them, since no one gave them anything. During that day, after being in other parts of the city, I've noticed the same type of bird that was looking intently at me, and started singing at me. I can't really explain this... was it one from before? How did he/she followed me? I took the bus...

Funny how our brain distracts us from the essential things (need like food or love) by interpreting things yet we are a dominant species - i mean we kill others but they dont kill us.

"Ravens in Winter", great read. Biologist who studies bumblebees sees Ravens doing something that puzzles him. Figures 4 or 5 weekends of observation will provide the answer. Five years later ... he publishes this book. You could say he became a little obsessed.

Where I use to work there were thousands of Ravens, this one day when a coworker dropped off supplies for the first time, when all of the sudden he asks me with this concerned look on his face “what is that sound “ I responded “those are ravens why” he looked at me and said “it sounds like the predator is in the trees” I had a chuckle when he said that.
