Strange old multicolor pen restoration - Restoring project
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
I bought a lot of 4 old items a while back the lot had this multicolor refill pen, the razor (brand is razo) and two completely worthless rusty items. I knew this pen would make a good video and also the razor might make a video. After searching Ebay I saw one of those razors being sold for 100 USD and I think the pen could be worth at least 60-70 USD and I paid around 16.5 USD euro for the lot so it was a good deal if I want to sell those. I'm actually not sure if this should be called pen or pencil in English but pen is shorte, so...
The pen is probably made of nickel silver (aka german silver or alpacca) and it could be silver plated but that I don’t know for sure. The metals are the same color. The pen has 4 tips that take 1.18mm refills but they can to be only around an inch long. It’s supposed to be used for multiple colors (black, blue, red and green in this case). The mechanism inside is quite fascinating, but it’s still relatively simple. The outer shell of the pen locks the tip into outside-position and a spring pulls it back when it’s released.
After some searching, I found that both nickel silver and real silver can be cleaned from oxidation bu putting them is a solution of warm water, baking soda and salt with some aluminum foil. All the tutorials showed this worked in minutes but to me it took at least 2 hours and still it took some rubbing with toothbrush to get the oxidation off. I didn’t try any chemical methods on the mechanism because it had multiple metals which could lead e.g. to corrosion of the springs. I used WD-40 type multispray and eventually also brass brush to remove all the dirt and oxidation. After cleaning I polished the parts with metal polish compound and a Dremel with wool wheel and cleaned them with acetone to get all the wax from the polish compound off.
I wanted to also do something to the pen case I got with the lot. It was in decent condition, so I only re-oiled it with lanolin, which (in this case) was from a wool care product. This will make the leather softer and last a lot longer. If the leather dries up it will start cracking.
Thanks for watching. Please subscribe, like, comment and share as that helps me to create more content in the future. This video was probably more goofy than the typical ASMR but I'll try to more both in the future as you seem to like both jokes and the ASMR aspect.

After looking into the age more closely, this size of lead was typically used from around 1915 to 1930's so the pen was probably made back then. EDIT: it's a Mont Blanc pen from 30's. Huge thanks to all those who told that in the comments!

These were made in nice materials? Who’d a thunk it? Ive only ever seen these in plastic! It never ceases to amaze me what people find to restore. Absolutely love it!
pens use ink, pencils use graphite. love your use of humor in these restorations, not to mention the skill required to clean such tiny pieces of metal.
My childhood in this video. I had one of that in elementary school, was great :)
I'm one of those nerds who has antique colored lead for mechanical pencils so i sure did absolutely enjoyed the restoration of this beauty!

I had a pen like that when I was in school. It was cheap plastic and made by Bic. I thought it was the coolest thing, but I was easily amused back then. Your’s is a hundred times better. Thanks again.

This was the sneaky-funniest video I've ever seen on youtube. love it.
here in Brazil there are pens like this with up to 8 colors, but there are ballpoint. Congratulations, i like this video.
I had a plastic version of one of these in Highschool. Looked the same shape wise too. Fun to use!
Nice work. The cheap plastic version of this was a hardy favorite in Christmas stockings during the 1980s. I must've got one every year from my mom for five years straight.
I had a similar pen that had two colours of ink, a mechanical pencil, and a stylus for early touch screens, as well as a rubber in the top for the pencil. Not as old as yours, but when it finally broke I had a good look at the mechanism inside. It was pretty interesting since it only had one button and the selection was made with help of gravity by rotating the pen so that the label you wanted was facing up.
Beautiful restoration and a lovely item.
When you poured the water into the tub labled "hot ice" my first reaction was to say: Huh yeah that is pretty hot ice.
After Watching this I decided to subscribe this Channel ! Now I am your new subscriber...and I love this restoration.. From Pakistan

Any idea of the year it was made? I was born in 1959 and remember having pens with different colors in one. I don't think plastic was huge in the early 60s so maybe I had a metal one? I guess I can google. thanks for the video.

"Insert dirty joke here." Way ahead of you. I was thinking that on the first loa-.. UM shot... shot of lotion. That's another thing I love about restorations... endless innuendos.
I have a metal pen with a digital clock and it was a nice pen, a rare one. It was my grandfather's. I misplaced it though. If I find it, I will donate it to you.
Is it just me or is this video a little more...fever dream than usual?
It was only a few years ago that I had one of those pens on my shirt pocket at work. The blue was for everyday use, the black ink was for photocopies, and the red was for under lining. These pens are still available, though mostly made of plastic nowadays. I still have one with six different colours.
Metals, Wood, Electronics AND Leather!?!? Damn... Damn

A Chuck Norris joke in 2019, you just made my day dude!
Good humor and good at restoration? I gladly give you my sub!
I clean lots of flea market jewelry with foil, baking soda and barely boiling water. I put the foil in the bottom of a glass dish, add the silver jewelry, sprinkle with baking soda until covered. Then add the barely boiling water. The solution should bubble. Metals come clean in minutes. No scrubbing required. Good luck for next time.
That old pen reminds me of the Bic four color pens that they had out in the late 1970's and throughout the 1980's
You need to get oil-resistant gloves, I used the same gloves and they don't protect from oils. the "multi spray" is some type of mineral oil, which penetrates the skin and might not be safe. plus: keeping the gloves on gives you a pro look ;) especially that you live in Finland!
If you use “Calgon” water softener along with everything else, it cleans certain metals really well. I clean silver coins and jewelry this way
Caught me off guard with that subscribe, thought for sure it would be written by hand at the end of the video to test the pen!
Hot ice.....your not getting me a second time....im on to you!
