I used to live on a tropical island and could not even imagine what “cold” meant. “Cold” was like the AC was making me shiver while I wear my tank top. It was only after I moved to Canada, that I understand that “cold” means “shock”, “constricted movement”, “organ failure”, “death”. People who are speculating some wild story do not understand what “cold” is because they have never felt it themselves.

As a life long boater & boat owner, and 35 year, member of the USCGA, I've heard many stories about people who fall off their boat and drown because they can't get back in. This likely happened to Garrett. [My guess is that he stood up in the dinghy, and attempted to launch a big hunk of meat, up & over the gunnel, but didn't have enough momentum and it came back at him, causing him to lose balance and fall in, pushing the dingy away, where it was pulled away in the current.] You can't be in denial that things can go wrong, and they do so quickly on the water. You've got to have a swim ladder, swim platform, rope ladder, or knotted rope, that can help you climb in, should you end up in the water. You only have a couple of mins before hypothermia renders your hands useless, even in warmer climates. May he Rest in Peace.

To everyone who asked why Adrian didn't swim to the boat, the video narration stated that the water was too cold and the current too fast. To everyone who wants to know exactly how Garrett died, I suspect that details were kept out of the video out of respect for his family's feelings. To everyone who said Adrian should have built a raft, what would he used to tie the pieces together? How would he stay on top? and How would he paddle? This was not a Tom Hanks movie.

For anyone who thinks it’s suspicious just keep in mind a tiny boat like that weighted down w/ 300 pounds of bear in even slightly choppy swells is totally vulnerable. If the dude fell in that cold water in all his clothes and there was a heavy current it’s pretty easy to see what probably happened.

This reminds me of the episode of I shouldn't be Alive where everyone in the comments realized, reading between the obvious lines, that the woman and man in the episode obviously murdered the other two they were stranded on the boat with. It's funny cause in both cases the "survivors" are super religious people eager to present themselves in this heroic light which makes it even more stomach turning when you realize what they most likely did to the people who are conveniently no longer here to tell their side of the story. Crazy.

Garrett, I am so sorry for your loss and am thankful that God had spared your life.. I want to share....I have also camped out in blackbear country near wolf packs in Washington State. You should have gone into the tree line and built a shelter. Build a wind blocking wall out of lumber. Build an A-FRAME lean-to AWAY from the wind, and build a fire in 3 places--one infront of your lean-to, one to the right and one to the left of your camp. You'd probably spend 8 hours a day collecting firewood, but atleast you'd be warm, comfortable and safe where you could eat geese, birds and other animals for food. The forest is always a good solution to protect against the harsh elements and the weather. Choose a good spot around very sturdy trees with no dead stands or fallen tber around. God Bless you and I'm glad you're safe.

Now that I watched this episode. So sorry to hear about your friend, Garrett. Our weather is unforgiving. We get tons of rain, Ketchikan is part of 17 million acres of a temperate rainforest. Being in the wilderness with no one around is scary. Anyone visiting our beautiful town must be prepared for the winds and rain. Some times we have nice days. Being born and raised here, we adjust to it. Right now residents on Park Avenue and Creek street had to evacuate their homes. Mudslide in Haines buried people. The tiny town where some of my family live, is in a state of emergency. Enjoy our home when you visit because, it's not always so nice in the winters.

I'm not sure what that comment means. If you're trapped, thirsty and there isn't any fresh water around, and then you find some pristine mountain water, generally that's considered to be a good thing, and people who believe in God call that "good thing" a "blessing". It doesn't mean he's saying it's a miraculous event.

There were so many logs of wood lying down which he could have used to float on them to the anchored boat 🚢 which was 1/2 a mile away. 3. It was a coincidence that he had both rifles at the same time..."to try and reduce the weight on the small boat" 🤔🤔 4. They couldn't make 2 or 3 trips for the bear meat 🍖? Thus the dude has to be left with both rifles?? Am not a detective but I got some questions

If you are wondering why he didn’t swim I have an idea behind his choice not to. Usually large rivers have a strong current. They came in on a boat that was fairly big, not a John boat. But you still have to be careful in a river that is only 8-10 feet deep. Water can appear “not that fast” on top but be super fast moving underneath. He was an experienced hunter so I imagine he knew that. A swim of 800m was risky. Just try to swim that far at your gyms pool. You can also fuel up beforehand and I still bet most people can’t finish. This guy had only eaten a few hundred calories over several days so his best chance was day 1 and at that time he wasnt in full wtf mode.

I've noticed in stories like this, most never mention God in the mix like this man did. He will go through it with you and help so why would you want to just try and do it all alone. Remember we've been told, "God first and all else shall be given." Blessed Day Your Way

Any hunter knows to keep your firearm with you at all times if possible. Leaving 1 little gun behind is not going to make much difference in the weight of the boat. The guy was making his way back to the anchored boat with 300 lbs of bear meat when low and behold Baloo was heading towards him in a small row boat as he was visiting his uncle paddington who lived out that way , anyways he spots this human and turns towards him to investigate the smell his big old nose was picking up . The guy in the boat started screaming and shouting and threw his coat over something in his boat but not before Baloo caught a glimpse of his nephews skinned body , and that ladies and gentlemen was how mr human never got back to the safety of his anchored boat. Moral of the story...there are no better hunters than KARMA !!

Combat Appreciation -- Seeing the demise of my companion on the river, my immediate concern would be to build a raft back to the boat. On the boat there are survival supplies. My efforts should immediately be focused on the raft , how may hours of daylight I have, and the vicinity of predators. I need to maintain a fire and dead wood fuel supply for warmth and to deter predators and to act as a light beacon should darkness fall earlier than anticipated. This would be the easiest survival strategy, rather than attempt the rigors of the interior. Time is of the essence. I need that dirigible raft and I need it fast. I would be worried about the river current which could sweep me past the boat and out to sea, but it's worth the risk.

I dont wanna make any assumptions here, like others, but was there no way for him to get to the Boat? Along the Coast, to get nearer, then swimm, guess he cant swimm..? I mean half a mile seems doable, or is it that deadly cold, thought it was summer?

You might make the swim but would you then have the strength or dexterity to be able to pull yourself out of the water?

He had a look in his eyes when he was talking about the man departing the shore and leaving him alone... I expected the man who was leaving to have abandoned him, because the look in his eyes was like he hated the guy. Then it said he was his best friend which I missed if it mentioned it previously, I was distracted at the start of the episode

Wow that was a big bear 🐻 head. I'm glad they found Garrett s body. I'm sure they did an autopsy..no gunshot wounds or trauma. I think the JWs story holds water.

Hunter??? A Caveman has more know how than so called Modern Man. Even a tiny bird knows how to make a nest for shelter. The Boat was just sitting there until it drifted away. Even the Boat got away!!!

I'd of gone in to surviving mode, he has everything to survive and everything he needs to survive walking distance away. Go hunt some food, build a shelter, make a fire, it's full of fresh water rivers from the mountains,It's not like having no gun or figher starter, I don't buy his story in full., makes him sound heroic like all men want to be. Go watch lone survivor the film then watch the true story its nothing like the soldier made out, or the film

I would have went to higher ground and challenged the animals with firepower. I would have made kills for meat. Built a makeshift shelter. Made lots of fire and smoke when possible.

I truly think the kayak flipped in the swells and dragged Erik down by the stern of his skiff. In the waters of Alaska you don't do a swim along even with life preservers for lengths of time. I know of only one person from the Netherlands [I think] who could stand cold water for long periods. He received publicity because it is an extreme anomaly.

Every time I hear one of these stories, the weather will be fine while the people/person is ok. As soon as they get lost or injured, the weather turns deadly: Ton of rain, ton of snow, extreme temperatures etc. It’s like nature is TRYING to kill them or teach them a lesson. I really don’t feel like humans should be out there hunting etc. Weird🤔

Just wondering why the guy wanted both guns to be left with him? Like leaving 1 gun behind is not going to make a huge difference in the weight. If they were smart at least leave the kayak with just the bear pelts and some meat in it and they both go in the other boat to unload. Or put the pelts in the 1 boat (likely weighed less then the guy left behind) and the other guy paddles in the kayak. Or just insist to the 1 guy we're leaving some meat behind and some of the pelts as I'm NOT staying here alone.

This story isn't weird. He was next to the boat for 6 days boat drifted after the 6th day. If u want to get rescued u have to stay close to the boat.
