    Agreed. And that's also why I will never take an excursion that isn't ship sponsored. We had one that went WAY way wrong in Belize one time where we were THREE HOURS late for the ship and they waited...because it was a cruiseline (Carnival in this case) sponsored excursion. We were compensated through having our money refunded AND our onboard liason (which sometimes we have one of those due to my son's disability) was absolutely horrified at how bad this excursion had gone. She got him a stuffed animal from Camp Carnival, a coffeetable book about the ship (the Carnival Magic) signed by the captain and a free tour of the navigational bridge. I've forgotten her name, but I will NEVER EVER forget her kindness towards us and our son (who was around 10 at the time). And we didn't ask for the extras...only for our money to be refunded (well, us and everyone else who'd gone on that excursion, around 50 or so people). We used the money to go ziplining the next day in Roatan and had an absolute blast. :D

    As a baby boomer myself, I am sick of privileged entitled boomers who think the world revolves around them and that other people should be kissing their backsides. I totally agree with you. I'm a boomer too, and the entitlement among some people is staggering. They should have been more careful and booked a tour through the cruise line. The thing is, if they let one person do it, then that will be a slippery slope of everyone thinking they can get away with it. It would total chaos. I have no sympathy for people who don't plan properly.

    Just to add to this, they mentioned that the safety of their customers should be the cruise line's first priority. Most people who book independently do so because they don't have to travel with 30 to 50 people at each stop including rest room breaks and there is usually a lot more to do on private tours than the limited options offered by the cruise line. Things happen and there is a risk but most of the time, there is much reward in doing independent tours. NCL is absolutely correct. Cruise contracts are available for everyone to read. All the passengers who made it back on time, port workers and pilots should not have have their evening disrupted because of late arrivals back to the ship. Some people make a game of pushing all aboard time, while others don’t want to pay the often higher price of ship arranged tours. As a general rule for us, if we don’t speak the language or there is a question of port safety we stay in port or take a ship arranged tour. Adults need to start acting like adults and take responsibility for their choices and actions.

I remember pulling out of Nanaimo British Columbia, waving to my brother whom had missed ships movement by only 10 minutes. After he paid to get back to San Diego to rejoin the ship, he was "awarded" 30 days restricted to the ship, 30 days extra duty, 1/2 month pay deduction (×2 months), and a reduction in rank! Cruise ships seldom have enough spaces on their shore excursions to have everybody on the to buy a space and absolutely yes, cruise ships know and depend on 3rd party operators to take their passengers on day shore excursions. We have even purchased a "one ticket buys all" from the shore excursion desk on the ship, that was a shuttle bus to take us from the port to another pick up point in the city, where we then could board a Hop On Hop Off bus that went around the city, a European city.

We were late departing Namibia due to 3 passengers not getting to immigration on the ship. Same thing on another cruise. Rules are rules. Be on time. You cannot hold up over 3,000 other passengers because of your agenda. Kudos to the captain on this one.

    I agree that rules are there for a reason, and I don't expect NCL to defer from that, but when they got back late, got the harbor master to take them out to the still tendered ship and NCL still refused to let them board it was a silly line to draw in the sand. To be blunt it was self-absorbed of the passengers to assume that the ship should wait for them, but also silly for the cruiseline to let the drama continue this far.

  • @hverrett9212

    @hverrett9212

    I questioned that also, but this has to be a safety issue. We've seen where new cruise ships can't even tender passengers ashore on the first cruise because they haven't been trained specifically on the tender boats in use. I'm pretty sure this is the same situation attempting to match the opening of the cruise ship to a non-tender vessel doesn't seem to be worth the risk?

  • @waynewebster5565

    @waynewebster5565

    But that isn't what happened. The ship was still anchored, but was no longer accepting incoming tenders. Just because you are at the ship doesn't mean you can get on. Just like an airliner, once the gate is closed and the skyway pulled back you cannot get on the plane even if it sitting on the tarmac - because the airline has submitted the manifest to the FAA and other authorities. A ship also has to clear customs with the country they were at AND where they are going. Letting them on after the fact would have reset this entire process. This isn't an arbitrary line in the sand - this is what they have to do to stay on their itinerary and be in compliance. I don't know what you could expect NCL to do? Make an exception? Where does the exception end? 10 minutes? 30 minutes? An hour? What about an hour and 1 minute? No matter what exception you make, someone will want just a little bit more ... just for them.

    @@hverrett9212 That's fair. I just know it's not a matter of opening a door and letting them back on board. I don't pretend to be an expert, but I also know each country has their own rules regarding embarkation and disembarkation at their ports and the ship has to abide by them. it may not have been they didn't want to, rather they just couldn't - which is what I was trying to get across to the OP.

    It’s very clear & made public everywhere that the ship will not wait for you. They are not your private Yacht and you are with thousands of other people & you are not special & your money doesn’t make them wait for you. It is posted & told if you take an excursion that is not through the cruise if you are late you will be left. It doesn’t matter if you can get a boat or pilot ship to run you along side you will not get on. It’s like people never heard of insurance issues & the danger of transferring people that are not familiar with doing this. I am sure if one fell in or got hurt during the transfer they couldn’t get their lawyer on the phone fast enough to sue. What happened to accountability & following the rules like the majority of the people on the ship. If the cruise lines started waiting for late people none of the schedules would be kept. The cruise lines would be sitting in ports for hours over late people because then others would just not be on time either. I bet these two think planes should wait for them, shows shouldn’t start until they are in their seats etc. it’s amazing people like these two are so into their own world & the rest of us are supposed to apparently revolve around them.😳😳 That’s a big no & they are learning that with this lesson on don’t be late back to your cruise ship. These two are acting like spoilt children and are showing exactly what kind of people they are, overly privileged. Guess what book your excursions through the cruise line! Yes they are more expensive but it guarantees you will get back in time! These people need to get on a plane & go home and be quiet, at this point they are simply embarrassing themselves more with their the rules don’t apply to me thinking.

    No one has said how late they were to the ship. I'd like to know. According to reports I heard, the ship left their passports at the port for them. So, the ship had time to realize the 8 were missing, I'm sure there were announcements for them - that always happens. Then they had to enter the cabins, get their passports and deliver them to the port. That all takes quite a bit of time. NCL is not to blame.

    That's why you either book excursions with the ship or excursions with a guarantee back to the ship (with companies that can actually fulfill that guarantee). Also, I don't know why the Coast Guard took them out to the ship. They needed help getting into the Coast Guard boat. They probably would have had to navigate a ladder to get on the ship, which is very dangerous and people have died trying and failing to climb these ladders.

    Yes, I wondered about the Coast Guard piece of the scenario too as it seemed really odd. Their situation was not the kind of “emergency” that’d justify calling the Coast Guard. Frankly, I was surprised they entertained their request and actually took them to meet up with the cruise ship. Why did they even go? Seems the CG should know… Besides, it seems she tried to bypass all protocol and FORCE things to happen that just couldn’t because she didn’t understand how the cruise ship operates. So she still didn’t get to have it HER WAY after all. It’s like a Karen who calls the police 911 for a non-emergency situation…occupying their time and taking resources away from more potentially dangerous scenarios. I wonder: Will The Campbell’s incur a fine for wasting the Coast Guard’s time for a non-maritime emergency?

    Bottom line, when you are planning your cruise you must decide whether the cruise line will "take care of you" while in their care on the excursions and getting you back on that ship, and this includes you suing them when things go wrong such as accidents. Or, you put yourself in someone else's hands that has not been vetted, knowing they might not get you back to the ship (or equipment etc not in proper working condition) and also you need to predetermine the difficulty of how you will get out of that place on your own, whether you try to rejoin the ship or go home.... on your own dime! There are not many places that I would book outside of the cruiseline. After all, I am on vacay to relax and NOT WORRY.
