《 STRAIN VERSUS SUPPORT | A4 - F5 | KOREAN FEMALE VOCALISTS 》
Note by note comparison of strained/unsupported singing versus supported/resonant singing from female Korean vocalists.
DESCRIPTION
STRAIN: A lack of proper support, accompanied by the singer forcing out the note by squeezing the throat muscles together, raising the larynx and potentially having tension in the jaw, neck, tongue, etc. This creates a closed, sometimes yelled sound and is unhealthy for the vocal cords.
SUPPORT: Using proper breathing techniques to ''support'' the voice, achieved by using the diaphragm to control the airflow against relaxed, connected vocal cords, favourably unobstructed by tension or at most hindered by very little tension. This creates a healthy, open sound. Support is desirable for anyone who wishes to sing as supported singing provides vocal longevity, greater creativity, etc. for the vocalist.
It's worth noting that even if a singer has developed proper support, they'll still start straining at some point, depending on how developed their technique is. Likewise, a singer appearing in the ''strain'' category does not mean they necessarily strain throughout their whole range. Most singers have a ''supported range'', in which they're able to properly support their voice, and when singing outside of that range, they'd most likely strain/be unsupported.

ok this came on my feed and as i watched and see a variety of singer examples, especially with the many king of masked singer clips, i got my hopes up to see Yeoeun listed... she's imo one of the most amazing vocalists and one of the earlier idols to ever crowned as King, she was rookie even at the time n nobody thought she's an idol from her singing. as a fan of her who knows nothing abt musical n vocal terms(i did learn something from reading the description though) i'd love to know a bit more about her vocals too. well, i watched to the end n feel a lil empty now lol. but the variety is nevertheless nice to see.

Tidak ada yg sambil tersenyum seperti jung eunji ketika high note.
To those singers who was labeled as "strained" are not strained at all there are just audible tension in their voice. Because if it is strained then their voice would crack before they get in to the note. For me tension ≠ strain. Because tension is lacking of vocal technique while, strain doesn't have technique at all. Ps. I've been watching your vid recently glad to know that there are people who are aware about vocal technicalities of this talented ladies! Pss. This is not a hate comment. I think many of the strain is not strained. Sounds like you are mixing up between strained and head voice. Head voice is not strained.
@themradio4600
3 жыл бұрын
First, I'm sure none of the videos I showed is head voice - you can still hear the "heaviness" of the chest voice mixed in to create the mixed voice. Second, your sentence doesn't really make much sense, because head voice is a vocal register, while "strained" is a quality. And lastly, head voice can still be strained if the vocalists raises their larynx, squeezes their throat,... pretty much everything that I've listed as a strain-causing factor in the description. Thanks for watching anyway!

I've just got to add, quite a few of these clips used to differentiate between strain and support feature the vocalist singing in English, compared to Korean. Not sure if that was purposeful or just not even considered, but you can't technically compare between two very different languages such as English and Korean, and say it's just a lack of support (because it's their 2nd/3rd+ language they're still learning), when it's also largely a very different mouth, tongue, and throat placement (which is how strain is differentiated with support) that they're not used to. I would also bring up the point of natural accent and nasal surgeries in this industry, but definitely more so it not being fair if you're comparing two vocalists singing in two different languages, as well as group vs solo vocalists. Some videos are also from TV singing shows (e.g. 'King of Mask Singer'), which are proven to have edited vocals that are done before the episodes are aired. Other videos also have a vocalist moving or are fancams from concerts, which highly distort the vocals based on the phone's audio perception, but what you hear at concerts is also distorted with what is actually being sung if you have a good audio engineer. Another thing I'd argue is that all of these vocalists sing very different genres and have personal preferences into how they sing, such as a stylistic approach compared to a more technical approach. Both can sound great or horrible, one doesn't and isn't necessarily worse, just that vocal strain can and does happen to all, but a vocalist is more susceptible to strain if they aren't supported and are trying to sing outside of their current range (which, again, happens to all). I don't care about these rankings, as I genuinely couldn't care, but also because idol vocalists, especially group ones, often aren't given the opportunities to showcase their new abilities, which leaves fans with this perception of there being no improvement every comeback. And whilst I wouldn't know each idols' schedule, that would just be an utterly incorrect judgement, because they would continue to receive vocal coaching past official debut.
