I think guys that go for this look want it to be natural looking (most, not all) and so with that rolling the hair in different directions each rod/roll you will get a more natural and fuller look. When they roll the same direction, it’s too uniform, creating a telltale perm.

usually you want your hair a bit shorter like 3-4 inches. having hair with 5-6 inches and you want to get a tight perm, means that the perm will usually go nappy if not taken care of properly.
