Concur, good advise, but one caution on the bungee/snubber....Mine have broken after 2 years of use; They're not that expensive, so I change them periodically. Better than replacing cable or weights.

Great vid.. been watching ur vids for a while now and always learn something new. Just got my first downrigger today.. and a friend tried to talk me into the chromed out fish weight. I ended up getting ur basic cannon flash weight in 8lbs. After watching this, yeah I think will pass on them expensive weights. Saved money bought a new Kokanee rod n reel LOL. Btw what is blowback? Thanks for ur awesome content. Met you a while back at seminar at fisherman’s warehouse sac.. but I moved to Nevada so getting used to fishing these mountain lakes for trout ect. Still come home to Cali to chase bass, striper and salmon but giving these trout, kokes and such a go! 😎🎣

"Blowback" is the angle of the downrigger line caused by water pressure against the line and weight. The faster you go, the greater the angle. You can decrease blowback by using a heavier weight when fishing deep.

Fish Hunt Shoot Productions awesome thanks for that! Good to know.. Wow great stuff I have been watching these videos religiously for the past week. Since I found your channel. I can't afford downriggers, well a boat to put them on for that matters lol. Are downriggers required to catch decent trout trolling. Got a trip to Collins lined up second week in May. Will not having the right equipment skunk our efforts? All I can afford is to rent a 12 aluminum boat for a day. If so how could I get the bait down to the fish? Thanks for any advice.

I love my 4 fins. They have way less blowback with less weight and the sit in my gunnels and won't roll around

Hey if you use the fish shaped shiny downrigger weight in the ocean. Be prepared to lose them as thresher sharks love attacking them and will blow your weight off if not strip your downrigger cable off as they hold on and run!. Happens a lot! Don't even put the shiny stuff on the cheap weights, they attack that also. So, I totally agree with you on downrigger weights!!

I will say it does matter when I’m the ocean! The round ones have so much blow back… the fish ones I didn’t notice a difference.. the pancake one seem to do best

Funny you should mention as I have heard more or less the same thing from a guide, and experienced people working in stores. "Don't waste your money on a fancy cannon ball as it won't catch more fish." They have managed to make a money racket out of a simple thing like a lead weight, with an extremely simple function. I'm fairly new to down rigging so I'm asking questions.

Yes I agree…. If they help at all it’s likely not enough to be noticeable…. I try to think like a commercial salmon angler…. Keep it simple, fish with confidence and land big fish!

I'm cheap/thrifty. I m ade my own weights using stainless wire and beer cans s forms for the lead. You can pour as much or as little as you want and the scrap lead can be free if you look around. haven't lost one since I made them.

Hey Cal there’s a certain lake in Victoria Australia thats called Purrumbete that is renowned trophy fish lake consisting of of Brown, Rainbow, Australian bass, Chinook and Red fin. I believe this lake would be a challenge for you and respectfully request you take said challenge on as this lake has humbled many a fisherman! But if you google this lake you’ll see that there are monsters in it. Please reply and then I will pass on my details.

Most cylindrical weights are made our of steel bar, which is much less dense than lead, therefore their surface profile has to be much larger, offsetting any potential advantages,

I have the small Scotty electric on my kayak. I use 30 lb test to connect my cannon ball. I'd rather lose a $20 ball and not take the chance of flipping the yak.

@@fishhunt3471 So far so good. I lost a 4lbs Cannonball once w/ the 30lbs. Recently I've been using a large line snubber with a 6 lb ball. Its a good shock absorber. I think it would break before a flip but I don't get close to the bottom unless I've passed over an area.

Your thoughts aren't worth much. Did you do any tests? Know of any data you can steer us to? I suppose at the depths you're fishing it doesn't matter much, but fishing deep in the Great Lakes I can definitely see differences in the amount of blow back I'm getting with different weights.

If you are fishing deep water you need more weight and a weight with a fin but does a chrome fish shaped weight that costs $100 plus produce more fish than say a pancake weight of the same weight? I doubt it….
