    I have a similar set up and often run deep here in Lake Michigan. I haven't found a good reason to run the down rigger arm 90* out from the boat- I angle mine pretty close to the hull for easy connection (...your hook stick is legit though). Having it 90" out also made a noticeable impact on my boat lean/stability in bigger water. FWIW. Thanks for the video!

    If you position the knob closest to you it’s easier to hold it with your palm while you loosen or tighten the brake. Your palm will keep the reel from spinning so you can loosen the brake completely and the reel will turn easily and without all that noise.

    Could you make a video on different seasons and what to use like if you were in summer and you could only pick about 3 lures to use or if your were in fall you can only use 3 lures but with all the seasons anyway great video

    I worry about downriggers on kayaks. In the open...no big deal, if the cable /weight hits an obstruction you might be swimming. And....if you have electronics...you can see ball depth on the sonar.

    Hi Cal, thank you for sharing !!! I plan to use a downrigger in a (french) lake, around 130 ft deep, where arctic chars stand at early spring. Should I use you trout ans salmon rod, and which reel would be best for me ? (As I will need quite a long line). Thanks for your advices !

    Hi Cal can you use a down rigger with lead core?

  • @FHSTackle

    @FHSTackle

    It’s not really designed for that. Leadcore is good for fishing the top 25’ of the water column. Use the downrigger for deeper water.

    Why are my scotty down rigger line releases not releasing when I've hooked a trout? I'm using scotty minis 8lb floro with a 4in or 6in dodger and 1 foot leaders to trolling flies, spoons and spinners.The rods are a 7 and 8ft medium power rods and one 7'6ft light power rod. I'm trolling at approximately 1.5 to 2mph I'm happy that I've caught them but would prefer to not drag a fish around not knowing I have hooked it so I can keep it alive in the live well. This is happening every time I catch a fish. Thanks in advance if you can answer this perplexing issue.

    Don't put the line as far back into the clip....You're not going to get releases 100% of the time, but you should be able to dial it in pretty well by varying the depth of the line in the clip....

    Well, couple things...I didn't have the tension screw loose enough....Also a little parafin (sp?) wax works wonders in terms of making it silent. It's a solid piece of gear...
