I actually use it skiing a lot. Give one hand a break or maybe to take a photo, grab a quick snack or something!

Can you use your harness gear loop or carry tool on your harness?

You can but the pick will be in the way and possibly rip your jacket or worse stab you. The shaft also impedes leg movement.
