Story of a handbag (handmade with cloth lining)

This time i was challenged to make a handbag for my sister.
The requirements were mainly - "it has to be cool".
Ok. Cool.
I didn't really know what to do, so i just started at a button specialist shop and went from there.
A lot of thinking and hesitating beforehand and then mostly improvising on the way.
Once again i tried something new, i've never done before - so i tried some cloth lining.
In the end i pretty much f*cked it all up - but fortunately that's not included in the video :P
the video shows:
- the button store
- fabric shop
- leather shop
- cutting, trimming
- edge beveling
- edge painting
- burnishing
- attaching and securing the lining
- sewing by hand
- placing rivets
- attaching magnetic buttons
Enjoy watching!

Great product & video. I’m new at leather craft. I use funky men tie fabric to line small products. Small cases & wallets. Usually free or from second hand store and a few are designer brands and quality silk. Cheers.

That video was cool. I like the beginning and also learned how to line something. Great job. It’s nice to see something a little different.... the story behind the product your making. If I were to video my stuff, I’d like to do it the same. Also, the music choice was spot on. For future, you might want to play some different music tracks rather than the same one.

@@awaria6891 I completely understand. I’ve done some video editing myself. How long did it take you to do the video? I’m guessing 3 to 4 hours? I was just thinking through how I would do it and I would probably get raw footage almost everywhere I went. Then, come up with some random narratives in my spare time. Then, assemble it from the raw footage and add some music. (of course, I know that’s easier said than done :-) you could even have the same narrative going over and over and just tweak it a little bit each time. Just a thought. Also, what Kind of camera are you using? And, video editing software?

@@danday486 hmm... it's quite some time ago now but it was definitely more than a few hours. I would say the editing took me maybe that amount of time, probably more. First there was the concept phase - i knew i wanted to do that bag but no idea how to present it. After that i went shopping an filming the shopping part, which took a few hours. Then the production.. and as you may have realized - i am a noob :D - so i did it over a few days (in the evening after work) and then postpro.. The main camera i am using is a now kinda old Sony A7S with some Canon L Lenses, but still nice camera, full format and flat color profiles. As i am doing video editing in my day job i have the whole Adobe suite available..(i use Premiere and maybe some AE) Thanks for the inputs - you are probably right that it would be feasable to "recycle" that arrative and concept - it is maybe a proof of concept as it is now..

Great video! Thanks for sharing! What product did you paint on the edges before you painted and burnished them? It was white but it didn't look like toconole.

Great video! Question. What do you spray to the fabric go stick to leather? Some kind of contact cement?

  • @awaria6891

    @awaria6891

It's actually just some regular glue (UHU). No special purpose or anything. BUT be warned, it already starts to peel off. Maybe i should have used more or it's just not the right glue. But i'm not concerned, cause i already secured the cotton on all edges, so it's not going anywhere..

I was hoping for the products like the specific glue, dye or sealants... But any info would be helpful, even if they are just listed as links in the description. Thanks for taking your time to make great content!

Question: I have a leather bag and has a big peel already so I peel it totally. And wanted to put canvas clothing on it. Is that possible and what glue to used?

i used some regular "UHU" spray you can get here.. and it's not exactly the best.. i wouldn't really recommend it if you want to have it really sticky. For this bag it doesn't matter much, because it's fixed on the edges anyway..

Hi mate, I have some curiosity about the liquid you apply on leather before you add the lining on Can I know whatbis that, or the name of the brand

Hey. No Problem. Somebody asked that earlier. The Brand is UHU - though the lining did peel of afterwards (the edges were secured, so no biggie) In the comment below, Jeffrey recommends 3M contact cement.
