Tyler came up with the idea of the song while at a bar and mistaking Mötley Crüe's lead singer Vince Neil for a woman with long blonde hair. Tyler's bandmates made fun of him, joking about how the “dude looked like a lady.”Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx, in his book, The Heroin Diaries, claims that the song was specifically inspired by Neil.

It’s funny how Steven Tyler wrote a song about a man looking like a lady and now he be looking like a lady

Those performers back then DID have really long hair and put on a little too much makeup.

Looking back now it's too much. Having grown up through the 70's and 80's, I can tell you it wasn't too much back then. The bouncers in the night club could always tell the guys from the girls when they came to drag us out of the ladies bathroom :) Yes, we used to go in the ladies room too. Because it was always cleaner, neater, nicer, and had huge mirrors almost the entire length of one wall. So we would go in there, doing our hair and make-up with the girls. Then we would end up in one of the cubicles with one of the girls there, just to kind of get to know each other a little better, you know :) Great days man. Grunge killed it all mate, it really sucked from like mid-90's onwards, and has never properly recovered.

Excuse me, but this is wholesale horse manure from the beginning. Fat des actually heard the original in a bar in Corpus Christi, TX one Sunday afternoon. I was there, and I have witnesses. You can hear the original on Bandcamp (Show of hands by Freddy McLain) Of course, the errorsmith version is totally different because fat des didn't listen that carefully, so the whole intent and point of view are missing in the gaudy California version. That Vince Neil story is simply a 'cover.' AKA BS!
