I think Luke wanted to go to the academy because 1. Biggs was there 2. It would get him off the farm, and 3. I like to think that he know that once he had some formal piolet training under his belt (the academy was flight school is the way I always understood it) that he could the defect to the Rebellion (if that was even on his radar. Seems like it was more or less just rumors at this time). I always really just thought he was wanting to go to get off the farm and find some adventure. If you remember, in Empire, this is what Yoda chastised him for.

I know that the radio drama of Star Wars pronounced Tantive IV as "Tantiv-vee 4," but can we all just agree that they got it wrong? That sounds so stupid...like they didn't know how words that end in "e" work...
