The irony is that you don't see TIE pilots in ESB, only in ANH and fleetingly in ROTJ. In Jedi they're only seen in the background in the hanger when the Emperor arrives, and I think very briefly during the race through the Death Star tunnels. The helmets are based around the classic US flight helmets like those seen in Top Gun, whilst having Stormtrooper faceplates, hoses, a Mohawk and greeblies built on. The same with the AT-AT pilots. Those were a couple of modified TIE helmets from ANH.
The TIE Fighter Pilot action figure has become legendary for its distinctive smell, having something to do with the plastic used for it. The image on the card has always just been a publicity photo and not a still from the film.

Yah, it has been a while since I visited these cards...the imperial tie fighter pilot doesn't appear much in the movies. Still worth talking about though.
Even in 1983 it was suffering from gigantism
