Cash really nailed this scene. The way her voice gives at 1:40. Not acting a German accent. But rather, she managed to do that subtle voice break that elderly people have at times. She gave the audience just enough time to process that she's very old, and then brings the vocal quiver. It makes you feel she really is that old.

That's really one of the great things about The Boys, how it takes characters who are meant to be our antagonists and fleshes them out so they feel like real people. A-Train has a performance-enhancing drug addiction that's literally killing him, the Deep's superpowers have made it virtually impossible for him to form relationships with non-aquatic creatures and is currently being taken advantage of by a cult. Even Homelander is struggling to find some form of love and acceptance outside of the quasi-Oedipal relationship he use to have. This is easily one of the best superhero shows ever created.

I love the portrayal of Homelander when it came to Stormfront. He's not a Nazi, but as a narcissist, he is indifferent to anything that doesn't affect him. He doesn't care about the suffering caused by Nazis, but he also doesn't really care about Stormfront's goals. But when he sees following the Nazi route as a path to his own benefit, he will happily walk down it without hesitation.

It's the most perfect interpretation they could've taken. A lot of shows fall into the trap of making their main villains have a safe kind of edge. As in, they want to portray them as bad people but also not do anything that would offend public sensibilities. In a lesser show, I could see homelander completely combatting stormfront's ideology right from the start. But here he recognizes it potential usefulness and utilizes it, and when stormfront's dreams go up in smokes, that's when he calls it all off. It makes him look slimey and two faced, making him still look pretty villianous rather then suddenly be taken over by their writer as a mouthpiece to explain why ethnocentriscm is bad, all the while not making him offend the public sensibilities. It was a very well done case of villain writing.

One thing you may notice about Homelander (or rather Antony Starr’s portrayal of him) is how he demonstrates emotions and thoughts through his face. Often when he’s listening to characters talk or argue or whatnot there’s often some tick or slight of the head to show that perhaps he doesn’t believe them or knows they’re lying or is preparing some sarcastic but brutal reply. Observe Homelander here though especially when Stormfront is telling him about her origins, her Nazi past, how he is everything Vought stands for and it’s coming from the woman he loves. This is quite possibly the only time Homelander is genuinely listening to what he’s being told. There isn’t an ounce of facial expression on him, he’s a complete blank. It’s... unsettling.

What makes Homelander disturbing in this scene is that you can see that he actually doesn't believe in any of that Nazi bullshit 3:00. Like, he is evil but smart enough to know that those are the ideals of crazy and weird fanatics (He doesn't care about race, he only cares about his power). BUT. The moment she mentions that HE will be their hero, his Ego activates. Thats right, he is ready to join anyone as long as he can save his precious Ego. Because thats the only thing he has ever got. He was raised without parents, so he has mommy issues. He was raised with unmeasurable power and no sense of responsability, so he has no morals. And most importantly, he was raised with no free will and the only purpose of being a mediatic marketing image. So the approval of the masses and his feeling of superiority is the only thing he has. And now that he is losing it, he is getting crazier than usual. If he has to be even more radicalized to be the beloved Hero again, so be it. That makes it a way more compelling and interesting Villain that someone who decides to be a Nazi because he actually believes in Nazism.

The first time I saw this I felt a genuine chill (not speaking figuratively, I literally felt a cold rush, which I don't get very often) when she spoke of being in a "war", because I absolutely believed that SHE absolutely believed it. There was a real sense of conviction, a sense of a patriotic hero trying to inspire others to stand up and fight for what's right before everything is irretrievably lost (because as far as she's concerned, that's what she is,) and hearing her nail that tone while spouting Nazi nonsense was terrifying. When I imagine people being indoctrinated into Nazism I obviously imagine Hitler's furious speeches to the masses, but I hadn't considered how the very human desperation/hope combo she displays here could be even more impactful. It's definitely worth thinking about with regards to neo-Nazis, as most people are probably pretty resilient to the Hitlerian crescendo as a brainwashing tool because of how much we've seen it discussed and mocked, but I can imagine a modern person being susceptible to her.

Some may not have liked Stormfront being changed to a woman, but this version worked out greatly. The gender swaps with certain character in this show aren’t there for “SJW Agendas”, but to serve a purpose in the narrative. This Stormfront actually has a humane side to her, having a former family with the founder of Vought, adapting to modern times for her plans, and forming a romance with Homelander that builds his character even more, all while staying true her comic book counterpart’s Nazi beliefs. This is how you adapt material, by making changes that improve the story while at the same time remaining faithful.

Homelander has another more "rational" reasoning, and that is simply that the supes are superior. Homelander thinks that a black supe is superior to a normal white person and that would have made him seriously clash with Stormfront down the line. I don't consider Homelander to be any better than Stormfront morally, people keep giving him kudos for not being racist like her but the way I see it, he's not racist because he doesn't care enough to be racist, he doesn't think any race is superior, just that he is superior to all. That's why even though he doesn't share Stormfront's views, he doesn't care that she has them either, his attitude is basically, "why do you think one colour cockroach is any more insignificant than another? They all belong on the bottom of my shoe."

The fact that she says “supermen” is actually very important and it’s not really a reference to DC, it’s a reference to the nazi concept of the “Ubermensch”, which means “Superman” in German.
