I moved to Tornado alley 3 yrs ago worst decision ive ever made. I live in Tulsa Oklahoma and we just encountered pretty bad tornado weather yesterday :( so scary to have to hear sirens and house shaking.

When living in Tornado Alley you have to be prepared for anything and everything. I live in Kansas and the scariest moment of my life was when there was a tornado around 3 miles from my house and town. There weren’t any lives lost which was crazy since it came into south Wichita, but a lot of houses and buildings were destroyed.

Absolutely a good idea, and it's even more important that people who live in mobile homes, 'manufactured homes', or trailers make arrangements like that, because even strong winds in a severe thunderstorm or a weak tornado can destroy those structures & injure/kill the occupants. Furthermore, this episode also makes it clear that an emergency safety plan should be sorted out before severe weather/tornado season begins, and people need to implement their plan without hesitation when there is a severe thunderstorm/tornado watch or warning. In order to be prepared to react quickly, people need to be monitoring the weather forecasts & weather updates every day, and they need to be following the weather several times a day whenever the forecast includes a chance of severe weather. Quite frankly, there is no excuse for not being aware of tornado watches & warnings. First, sirens are not the most reliable method to be warned about dangerous weather approaching. Rather, there should be a weather radio in every home (they're not terribly expensive), and there is a free NWS app that can be installed on your phone. Both the weather radio & NWS weather app provide constant updates 24/7, and both can be configured to set off an alarm when there is a watch or warning issued for your immediate area. This is great, because dangerous weather (including tornadoes) can strike at night, when you're asleep & when you're at work, you may not be able to keep an eye on the weather all the time..

My town was wrecked by an EF4 tornado, my home wasn't hit but, I started to have anxiety and a phobia of storms. I still do to this day. I think it was the reality that everything and everyone I love could be killed in an instant that hurt the most.

I was nearly missed by the March 2020 Nashville tornado. I had no idea there were going to be storms that night until I woke up from the siren. Sirens go off all the time so I didn’t realize I was in danger until I turned on the TV, they mentioned winds of 160 MPH and then the power went out so me and my family ran to our neighbor’s basement and it wasn’t even rainy or windy, just a lot of thunder. The terrifying part was that we lost cell service since it hit the nearest tower and I had no way of knowing if friends were okay or telling my family I was okay until we drove to an area with service the next day

Everyone in tornado alley should have a storm shelter. Money is less important than your life or your kids lives.

LOL Wanna hear something funny and true. We just had our underground concrete tornado shelter installed less than a month ago. While smack dab in the process of having our privacy fence installed for our whole back yard including the shelter. We had 4, no joke 4 people stop to tell me and the workmen it was pointless! It would of been 5 but mark my word I told the men to just pay no mind and turn around and they'd keep driving by. 2 others stopped by to find out which co. did it not that I'd recommend that co. to an enemy if I had one. We live less than 3 miles outside "tornado alley" (without a basement) which is subject to change on a dime with a couple cents back. Last one close to us was less than 10 miles away. Couldn't believe people stopped by 2 weeks after the shelter was installed because they knew once the privacy fence was up they wouldn't have a chance to say s__t!

@@froey198033 Well either find a way or lose your family. Its up to them. I understand not having the money, but barrow it or get credit. If you own a home you can get financing. If you rent, contact the owner about installing it. There is no reason not to get this done.

believe me I want one but they are insanely expensive depending on the amount of land you have, I have no choice to but to get one of the boxes you anchor to the ground inside your house, and jesus they are pricey. the trailer parks have them out here, most houses have basements though a lot of the basements just caved in that night, our local churches always leave the basements unlocked so anyone can go in if they need to. I've had thoughts, since we need to redo our basement anyway, I've thought about converting two of the rooms down there into a shelter so if God forbid it hits we can stay there while we rebuild over top of it. our towns never been hit, I'm about 30 miles from where this one hit, and truthfully you'll never see more people on their porches and in their front yards as you do when storms roll in, they are on another level out here. what people don't talk about though are the earthquakes, we got rocked by a 5.3 a couple years ago, and we have them pretty much weekly at this point because of the fracking the oil companies do.

I was asleep when a tornado hit us out of nowhere. You couldn’t see where it was, only hear the roar as it approached. Even if it was an EF1 and ripped parts off our house, I still will never forget the noise of it on top of me. I was delirious as well, since I had just woken up. It’s very terrifying and something you can ever forget

We live in Texas and when I was in kindergarten there was a tornado and we all had to hide in the bathroom and we could hear the wind whistling and pulling the roof up and we heard a tree fall and break the sign outside. I remember our teacher told us she loved us and that everything was going to be ok. It was so scary

Props to Chris for taking it upon himself to keep driving while bearing the elements. I’ve seen most people often stop and take cover. However, he had something that not many people did. He had a plan. He knew what to do and he used his mind to power through and help his wife.

The Greensburg tornado was the first EF5 recorded on the new Enhanced Fujita scale.

True fact the tornado that hit greensburg Kansas in 2007 was 1.7 miles wide, the widest part of greensburg was 1.5 miles in diameter, the tornado tore directly through the heart of town, and the town wa engulfed by the twister. Greensburg was completely wiped off the map.

I'm going to say something here, because this bothers me as well. It is true, however, you get used to weather. We get storms here all the time, occasional tornadoes as well, but it's infrequent. They are just storms, you have no way to predict if one will turn into a supercell and even if it does, the chances are you're not going to get a tornado out of it. I know in the past few years, the weather reporters make every, single weather "event", into a spectacle. People get keyed up about it, and then nothing really happens. After a while, you just stop believing it, and for about 20 years, the weather in many places have been milder than historical data of the area suggests.

I lived in Oklahoma for 2 1/2 -3 years About 45 mins from Moore I always took the weather seriously since I wasn’t from the area I didn’t even have a child at the time It really bothers me people don’t take it seriously especially with children ... it’s life or death Even during a severe thunderstorm where I live now in N.C. I prepare the bathroom in the hall for “just in case” situation even though the odds of a tornado here is slim but I have a toddler and won’t take the risk of ignoring it

We drove through Greensburg once on our way from Wichita to Santa Fe. We spent a little bit of time there and found the people remarkably helpful and kind, and the town very clean. Later, we discovered it had been almost flattened in this F5 tornado and we understood that the people had had to pull together to rebuild it all. They built it better than it had been; very GREEN. I so respect them there!

Isn't this already a thing? I can't imagine a southern/Midwest school not telling kids what to do in case of a tornado. Where I live in the Northeast, we don't really get tornados, and I still remember being told to either go to the sturdy reinforced gymnasium or hide in the classroom closet in case of a freak storm. Same goes for earthquakes. I may be wrong. It just seems unbelievable that a school in the middle of Tornado Alley wouldn't touch on something so important.

Every school I've ever been to growing up has had tornado drills at least once a year and I don't live in the Midwest. They would take everyone to the hallways away from windows or doors and line us up facing the walls on our knees with our arms covering our heads.

crazy storm, still talked about. I have a few pieces of furniture that survived that storm. the big well museum has a bunch of stuff from the storm. one thing they have is crazy it's a scene of the last supper, everyone's head was taken off accept for jesus.

Hanna Kemaw i live in the middle of tornado alley, and let me tell you, it is the scariest thing. Especially since most people (me included) don’t have a storm shelter or basement, and can’t afford one considering it’s thousands of dollars extra just to have it installed (not including building and labor). Every year when spring rolls around, we fear everyday that one pop up storm will spawn a tornado, and it normally does throughout April and May. Most of us only have to rely on closets, bathrooms or rooms under staircases. It really does soothe nerves to watch videos about situations like these..it helps

Put as many walls in between you and the outdoors if it ever happens. And the lowest level of your house. And don't die. That's all I know even though tornadoes are very possible here and do happen.

0:13 "Your Time Is Up" That is a very scary quote to hear.

I was working in a factory when a F3 tornado passed within a mile of the plant. Thankfully they built this facility in the 1950s and it was equipped with a fallout shelter. I just remember the line shutting down and the lady on the intercom telling everyone to go to the shelter. We weren't hit but the pressure drop really caused pain to a lot of folks. I felt the peak and my eardrums damn near splattered when it was close. You could feel its presence even if you didn't see it.

Man I used to watch these all the time as a kid. That intro gave me a surprising hit of nostalgia.

I couldn’t imagine the feeling of going through a tornado. I live 45 minutes north of Dayton, Ohio where the EF-4 tornado ripped through back in Memorial Day, I drove through Dayton in July and the damage was still highly visible. They’re unreal.

There's a map of the U.S.A. available online that shows every tornado track on record, and if you zoom in & look closely, you will discover a huge number of towns & cities that have never been hit by a strong or violent tornado. Also, keep in mind that only about 1% of tornadoes are EF-4 or EF-5 tornadoes. Nevertheless, it's extremely important to have an emergency safety plan, just in case, plus everyone in Tornado Alley & Dixie Alley should be following the weather forecast & updates every single day, then check the forecast & updates quite frequently on days when the forecast calls for a chance of severe weather.

There was an EF4 that tore through a small town 20 mins from here 5 years ago and you can still see some of the damage it left.

I am from England but my mum was in greensburg during this tornado. She thought it was going to miss her and so was watching it from outside the house she was staying at. She didn't realize it took a turn until it looked like it wasn't moving.

I'm happy you all survived. God bless you all. I'm praying for you all. I can't imagine how terrified you all were. My ex husband and small sin survived a tornado back in 91. My neighbors house was leveled and the next street over was pure devastation. I remember how the terror was till this day.

Their house was a “dream home” and “had everything you could ever want”. I guess the dream house should have had a basement.

I can't imagine what that father must have felt driving his truck through those winds straight into a monster in pitch black darkness, not knowing how his wife was.

I actually have a massive amount of family that lived in and or still lives in Greensburg, and hearing these stories with video really does help to put the event into perspective. The town is now thriving and is quite beautiful, and the Big Well has never been better.

Visited the Midwest from California, last month. Such nice people!! Tornadoes though? I am terrified of them. Earthquakes aren’t as frightening to me, as tornadoes.

Imo tornadoes are least dangerous. For one individual. The likely hood of one acre(about the size of the average house maybe bigger) is so low even in the heart of tornado alley. There are only a handful of violent tornadoes every year and very few of those are over a mile wide. And ingredients for storms can be predicted days, even up to a week in advance. If there is a big enough chance for an outbreak of violent tornadoes they(the NOAA) will almost always know days ahead of the event. On the other hand, yes, hurricanes are almost always known about weeks in advance, pleeeeeenty of time to evacuate. But storm surge speads miles across the coast and miles inland. Hurricanes can also spawn tornadoes. Earthquakes are unpredictable and cause buildings to fall and crush people.

@@edwinwx260 Hurricanes are only known a week in advanced if it’s a long tracking storm that comes off of Africa. If it spawns closer to land and then blows up in intensity right before landfall you might have a day or two of warning time.

Just north of Greensburg 3 EF3s followed the storm & all of the rest were wedges & the trousdale tornado was 2,2 miles wide & It was stronger than the Greensburg tornado but it was over farmland & the next day another tornado was gonna go towards Greensburg but it missed but it still effected the small areas that were hit previously & all the tornadoes that followed the Greensburg tornado were a mile wide or bigger so that's crazy!

All new construction, both home and commercial should be required to have a storm shelter.

Praise God they survived this! Incredible unbelievable power.

@@etheralonyx4471 More than likely not. When I was about a year and a half old, we had a close call with a tornado. I don't remember it, but my mom told me that she grabbed me and headed for the basement. The tornado missed our neighborhood by 2 miles. (Jan Griffiths).

The two worst tornadoes to have affected Kansas in modern times were the ones that hit Andover, Kansas on April 26, 1991 and Greensburg, Kansas on May 4, 2007. Edit: it seems like Andover got hit by a bad tornado again. Now they seem to know what the residents of Moore, Oklahoma felt after the tornado that tore through their city on May 20, 2013. A lot of people who live in Moore regard the tornado on May 20, 2013 as a deadly second act to the deadlier and more infamous May 3, 1999 tornado. Residents of Moore were saying that they "couldn't believe it happened again" following the 2013 tornado.

Then in 2023 THIS YEAR Moore had another tornado scare. An EF3 touched down right outside our town in Cole, OK. I was immediately watching it from Texas. I was instantly nervous as I watched it on the news live.

@@MichaelLovely-mr6oh Especially. Those residents had to be having some serious flashbacks & were likely terrified. I myself was instantly thinking "Oh crap... here comes Moore 3.0." That was what I legitimately was thinking the minute I saw that walk cloud really starting to lower down. Few minutes later & bang an EF3 tornado in the ground outside Moore. I was watching it happen live on tv & live in Reed Timmer's channel as a member from San Antonio TX.

I forgot to mention that Hayesville, Kansas was also struck by a tornado on May 3rd, 1999; but it isn't well-known because it is overshadowed by the more infamous tornado that tore through Moore, Oklahoma the same day. Besides; the 1999 Moore tornado was the absolute worst case scenario for meteorologists in Oklahoma City: a large, long-track, violent and destructive tornado on the ground in a major metropolitan area.

I remember when this occurred. I grew up close to Greensburg. When we could drive through the town....it was devastating...no homes, trees stripped of there bark. Just heart rendering.

Same here. I was in middle school, living in Clay County and I remember spending a lot of time in the basement that week cuz of all the storms. Seeing pictures of the devastation later was... Really hard, to put it lightly. Puts things in perspective (or it did for me, at least.)

The chances aee not high, but clearly it does happen. There gave been other towns in the middle of nowhere that have been nearly or completely wiped off the map by a large, violent torbado, e.g. Pincher, Oklahoma and Manchester, South Dakota. However, unlike Greensburg, Kansas, both Pincher & Manchester were never rebuilt & the survivors from those two towns just took what they had & moved elsewhere.

I was honored this weekend 2-5th of April to travel to Kansas and visit Greensburg. I took many photos and it was haunting to see photos and videos after seeing some of the debris in The Big Well museum. While fascinating for me, I could feel the screams, the cries.. I wanted to cry with them. It’s wonderful to see the town built up again but also wonderful to see they won’t forget where they came from.

I find it shockingly frightening that this tornado was only visible in the dead of the night due to lightning flashes. Watching the footage was horrific in itself. A supercell thunderstorm as such is a bad omen in itself due to it’s high propensity for tornadogenesis but to have one in the dead of the night spawn one of the largest and most violent ones on record with only lightning flashes to visualise it is nothing short of unspeakable terror. And from what I have seen, I don't think Greensburg has ever recovered from this tornado

An EF5 at night is straight up one of the worst nightmare storm scenarios possible. You can't see It coming till there's lightning, power flashes, or it comes into town where there is some city lights. People are sleeping, people have no idea of the danger until it's too late.

I can imagine that a tornado forming in conditions of next to no visibility such as in the middle of the night or an HP Supercell is an unspeakable nightmare situation. I therefore cannot admire and praise individuals like you who, in the face of extreme threat to life and property, go forward and study these storms so that early warnings can be implemented. I recall seeing footage of a group of storm chasers who got word that a tornadic supercell was heading towards a town in the middle of the night and produced a tornado. Extremely concerned for the citizens of that town, they went out on a chase in the middle of the night to get a visual on the tornado and the conditions of the storm. It was a long and difficult night for the chasers/meteorologists and anyone in the town who were aware of the storm coming their way. They never did find the tornado but it was definitely there. That footage and what the men who went out after the tornado went through was very haunting for me. It is an honour for you who chases storms to reply to me. Thank you.

Yeah...well, when you're doing something for the greater good of humanity that can impact lives and enable others to get through a potentially catastrophic situation so that they can live another day as well as help to demystify something that fascinates others, you are bound to get admiration and attention. You may not want it or be looking for it but it invariably happens. But I get it though, in my field which is Medicine, I shy away from excessive praise and attention and I don't really like it if someone makes a big sing and dance about what I do. I just want to help and protect others from illness and disease, that's all. And yeah...storm chasing has become a bit over glamourised when the reality is very different. I wish you to stay safe out in the field and I thank you for your time.

I love all of the storm stories when they talk about tornadoes. And I hope that the baby Boy is ok during the tornado warning.

I stayed in Greensburg for a month because my husband worked in the oilfield in 2014. They rebuilt the whole town green. The hotel we stayed in was powered by its own wind turbine behind it. Very nice, clean town but on the outskirts you can still see damage.

I wish everyone knew what lovely people live in Greensburg. Thier main street was full of pride. The pizza parlor, Duckwall, bank...all gone.

If you live in tornado alley, you should build a suit of armor into your basements foundation for every person in your family. Tornado comes, you strap in and ride out the storm. If there's a chance your basement could flood, make the escape hatch easy to pop from inside and always have a snorkel in there

This idea is probably not terribly practical or feasible irl but I love it anyway. Using your house like some kinda of stationary protective mecha! I'm vibing with this anime flavor

I had grandparents in Bucklin (20 miles west) so I visited Greensburg several times after the tornado. Not quite 95% of town was destroyed (closer to 75%) but it’s quite chilling coming into town from the east, passing the small parts of town that were not destroyed, and then just suddenly coming upon an empty landscape with no trees.

I stopped there in 2009 on a roadtrip, not knowing what had happened. 2 years later you could still tell something had happened. It was a great little town to visit. Gotta stop there to see the well!

There are so many heart wrenching stories coming from the rubble right now. I'm glad to read of the miraculous stories being shared too, because they help us hold on to hope, especially for those who are waking up with their lives changed forever. It's time like this we have to consider how it's possible for blessings to arrive under the guise of a curse, so as not to be discouraged from living. As unfortunate as it is for people to endure events like this, they can also bring out the best of humanity.

I can’t understand why a family living in Tornado Alley would have a big beautiful house with “everything you could want” EXCEPT an underground shelter! 😮

Main thing is they survived .

The Midwest has a lower cost of living, but also lower wages to go along with it and shelters are EXPENSIVE. I agree that there needs to be more of them, but there also needs to be something set up for those who can't afford it themselves. The Moore tornado in 2013 is a very good example of what happens when there isn't adequate shelters for all 🙁

I used to watch this show religiously as a kid. When did it make a comeback?

I love tornados and I really want to see one in real life but of course i feel bad for the people that lost lifes of loved one lifes

@@Toadette- They do look exactly like that. All depends what side the sun is on. Backlit, the tornado is dark. Lit from the front, it can even be white, with super dark sky behind it. Scary sight, no matter the angle. (Jan Griffiths).

The death toll would have been a lot worse if wasn't for the meteorologists, the storm chasers and the tornado siren operators who played major roles in warning the public. The tornado warning was issued about 25 minutes before the storm hit and the tornado sirens were sounded 20 minutes before the funnel reached town. Udall KS got hit with a killer nighttime tornado in 1955. This tornado was very similar to the Greensburg Tornado, except the residents of Udall had very little warning of the approaching tornado. Unfortunately 80 people lost their lives that horrible night.

Stephanie Jackson The sirens prompt you to get your ass in shelter. The point of alert sirens isn’t to tell you to pack all your survival gear and run. It’s to tell you to get the fuck down and pray.

Moore EF5 tornado of 2013 was hell on Earth for people living there. It left people who had previously dealt with 1999 F5 terrified. Some people actually moved away because it scared them so bad mentally. When the second EF5 hit Moore, one of the meteorologists on live tv said "This is May 3rd all over again." Those words to this day hit me hard all the way from Texas.

It's crazy how tornadoes can be so destructive yet be so defined

I feel bad for people that had to go through this but I am glad they were brave and had hope and rebuilt.

I live in Goddard KS which is right next to Wichita and I did not realize that Greensburg was actually pretty close to where I live, I was in kindergarten at that time, so we were extremely lucky. I think today is 14th anniversary of the Greensburg tornado. I pray for those people who survive from that tornado.

So scary. We are considering buying a home in tornado alley and I was shocked to find that even new construction homes don’t offer any storm shelters or cellars. After watching this we will have to do a lot more soul searching about whether this move is safe for our family.

That tornado is eerie but it was beautiful to see how it behaved and how strong it was.

These people ain't stubborn, these people are the key to keeping our feet on the ground, these peoples hearts will not fail us. God bless.

@@brittneypaigewright1 There are plenty of places you could to be fair. I say this as someone in southern Nebraska who spent a year drilling wells and working on irrigation pump systems around the area. Some places you are right weren't very deep at all - mainly the closer you got to the Platte River here - but you go 30-40 miles south and it was 200-300 feet before reaching the water table, leaving her plenty of space to build a hypothetical bunker. That's just one example, but the point is her vision definitely isn't impossible.

I live in California we have earthquakes right here and I used to want to move to the east coast just because the vegetation but never tough about the natural disaster's like tornadoes or hurricanes.

I saw this on storm chasers season 1and 2. That was so scary 😨 that everyone in greensburg was going to get hit by a nighttime tornado. I wish people in greensburg have built a hospital 🏥 in greensburg.

I just couldn’t imagine lhearing a tornado 🌪 then coming out of the debris and seeing my whole neighborhood demolished

Imagine that happening in Mayfield/Princeton 14.5 years later, or Winterset IA 15 years later, or Hedwick IA and Rolling Fork MS tornado 16 years later or even Milden IA and Elkhorn NE 17 years later. Imagine you're a mother protecting your baby. You have no basement and you are trapped in debris or you're a family going into their shelter and once they come out you have no house. People rescue you and you lose everything in those areas similar to Greensburg years earlier.

Glad their okay. (Peak) Tornado season just ended May 31st. But we all know this story will happen over and over. Glad Kelsey and the baby were okay. GOD BLESS

Severe weather scares me, tornados terrify me, tornados at night however? Panic intensifies ten fold...

I remember seeing this at age 9 and being scared pissless of storms for years after.

God please bless every family affected by tornadoes✝️ It's a tragedy to see the destruction but most of all any loss of human lives!!💔😪 I pray for the victims Everytime I see something like this, so very sad but nice when people have survived such an event.

It's not just tornado alley anymore. Dixie Alley has had plenty of nasty tornadoes in the past decade. Sadly down here, we're too close to the water table to have basements.

I recently started running milk tanker loads between Dalhart TX and Hutchinson KS as a regular route. Passing through Greensburg, I was wondering why the Main St area looked brand new and clean. While stopped at that 54 Truckstop last night while heading back home to Clovis for a short coffee break, a couple of locals in there were talking about it and I chimed in about the condition of the town now vs. then. I visited Greensburg back in 2013. It was surreal to drive along the main road into the town, and see homes & commercial buildings to the left & right, but cutting through the middle of town was a nearly mile-wide swath of land that had absolutely nothing but green grass. Apparentlly it was a lot easier to rebuild on either side of the damage path, plus bulldoze the damaged/destroyed buildings & cover it all up with soil. It was also amazing to see the huge concrete grain storage building that was covered with large & deep pockmarks from debris blasting into it at 150mph to 200mph. It reminded me of the photos I've seen of buildings in cities that have experienced heavy urban warfare (e.g. city of Hue, Vietnam during the Tet Offensive, cities where fighting occurred during WW2, etc)! BTW, I'm not sure if it's still available, but the town of Greensburg put together a book about the disaster & how the town recovered. I think it was sold to raise money for the rebuilding process. If you visit the town again, ask about the book....it's well worth reading!

I lived in Hutchinson when this happened and I still remember how terrifying it was knowing what was going to happen and praying that they would be okay. I don’t live in Kansas anymore but sometimes I still get a sense about the weather.

I have to watch these videos at least twice a year helps me remember what Todo and I must say it has payed off I was just in a tornado January 12 2023 making the 5th tornado I have survived and the scariest of them all because I have 2 kids now. As a father I'll never forget the fear I had for the safety of my children

5th tornado yeah I doubt that. If it’s true then you have very bad luck. Or was it that you were close to 5 tornadoes but not direct hits since that is pretty impossible
