Storing Salt and Sugar in Mylar

Salt
We need to store 8 lbs of salt per person per year. Protect from moisture and store in Mylar bags. No oxygen absorbers needed.
Sugar
We need to store 60 lbs of sugar per person. Those include honey, syrup and such. Protect sugar from moisture by storing in Mylar bags. No oxygen absorbers are needed.
I got my Mylar bags at PackFreshUSA packfreshusa.com/shop/seal-to...

I have watched so many prepping for long storage videos that I'm thoroughly confused. They either required expensive equipment or complex or someone has a better way to do it, or they give us too many choices - lol. Yours look easy, fast, and smart. So, I'm thinking too good to be true, which is why I ask so many questions. I'm really new to all this, and the time to get it done is running out, every day that I wait.

But it’s loads of fun. Start simple and work you way up. Simple works out great for us. Finally got a canner and looking forward to getting started. Did all this as a kid, so now I am going back to it. Will be great. Tired of preservatives anyway. And doc says to eat good nutrition packed meals. Have fun on your journey. Stay Safe and Blessed!

Please store a variety of salt, including iodized and sea salt or types of salt like pink Himalayan salt. I miss spoke In this video. Iodized salt or table salt is not the only source of iodine in the diet. However, for the public health and to prevent many preventable illnesses such as hypothyroidism Salt was iodized to help prevent those illnesses because as low levels of iodine in the American diet. I myself don’t use much table salt. I prefer coarse sea salt or my favorite pink Himalayan. But knowing the benefits of having some table salt stored. I purchased some and stored it. This video is intended to show people how much salt and sugar they should store based off the recommendations of the food and drug in administration for one year. As well as I’m trying to show how easy salt and sugar are to store. Also best practice to not use oxygen absorbers.

Are many ways to store for salt and sugar Vacuum and Sealing is ideal. You don’t get the same benefits as a Mylar or is long-term with your oatmeal, But it is more important that you were putting food away in buying Mylar bags. Can also store in glass jars with metal lids. I like your old pickle jars or spaghetti jars, but I would use an oxygen absorbers create that oxygen free zone to ensure bugs are done since they can not live in an oxygen free zone.

  • @blanketsurvivor

I sometimes choose to put desiccant packs in mylar bags I'm putting sugar and salt into. It's really unnecessary, but it gives me peace of mind they're extra protected against moisture. Only downside I've heard is that desiccant packs over many years can actually begin to release out the moisture they've absorbed and therefore into the salt/sugar. Not much of a downside for me because the packs are freshly opened and immediately within 120 seconds sealed into the mylar. Almost any moisture inside the packs would have been from the salt/sugar anyway. So the potential downside is you're no worse off from where you started. Risk/reward acceptable to me.

Double check the seals make sure they look good. Do you know if the Mylar originally decreased at all? Usually I like having the nitrogen in there…the left over gas is nitrogen. Oxygen is only 21% of the air we breath. So a ruff 1/5 air volume should decrease in the bag!

Over time, iodized salt may turn yellow, but this is harmless and may still be used. Salt is rather hygroscopic and will adsorb moisture from the air if not sealed in an air-tight container. If it does adsorb moisture and cakes up, it can be dried in the oven and then broken up with no harm done.” You are saying that I miss leading people. I respectfully disagree. Salt and sugar only need to be protected from moisture. If used with oxygen the crystals harden and stick together. Salt with iodine can turn yellow over time but it is not harmful.
