Stories of Old Greece and Rome - audiobook
Emilie Kip BAKER (? - ?)
The Stories of Old Greece and Rome is an easy to read summary of all of the famous and not so famous Greek and Roman mythological stories.
All of the famous Heroes are here: Theseus, Jason, Hercules, and all of the well known Deities. These stories tell the real detail of the myths, not the ones that have become sanitized (and dare I say it, 'Disneyfied') over the centuries. These are not stories for children, as the old gods and heroes were vengeful and some might say sadistic in their treatment of minor slights and misdemeanors. Putting out of eyes and ripping out of tongues is commonplace, and punishment by death is ever present. It is however fascinating to see how these tales have affected and influenced our culture and have woven themselves into our own myths and stories. (Summary by Kevin Green)
Genre(s): Classics (Antiquity), Myths, Legends & Fairy Tales
Language: English (FULL Audiobook)

Was first introduced to Greek mythology in 4th grade. I cant recall the 1st book Mrs Reed started us with, but she had us reading and discussing tale after tale and book after book throughout the school year. Marvelous

What a fantastic book. It makes ancient stories more accessable not to mention bringing clarity to names & stories i had vagualy heard of but can now put in full context, pandoras box comes to mind. I will be re listening while taking names & notes on my second listen. Fantastic marrator is the icing on the cake though, overall this is enjoyable as a Terry Pratchet book & that is high praise.

First in order to understand these myths; you should stop the modern way of thinking! In order to do that, to be able to do that; you should know History of religions, History of humankind, Pscyhiology, Philosophy, Archeology and Antropologyin a consuderable amount!!! Pschioanalisis as well. Then try to understand these myths and compare them with modern religions but you should be open mind and looking in an objective way! Then you can see similarities in beetween and start to learn the way of thinking of ancient people! You must know the collective memory of societies in the ancient ages and how this collective memory existed and how reflected in to legends, myths! Myths are reflections of the subconciesness of the ancient humans that is acumulation of the what people experienced through ages and that is what we call collective memory of humanit...Anyways it is a deep and long subject to talk about

I am Greek and we read these stories as children. LOL sex incest vengefulness, jealousy, putting out eyes tongues etc. I went to public school then after that three times a week Greek school reading these stories in Greek. It never upset any of us. We actually laughed at times about all the goings on of the gods and goddesses. Once a year we put on Greek Tragedy plays and laughed out heads off. Went to Greek school for years. I still have my books. We were never shielded from these myths and it did not hurt me or us and in fact, probably resulted in me being an atheist as many biblical stories are repeated in many myths virgin births, floods etc.

Children were also read all of these stories years ago at junior school in the UK, and followed by enacting them in our drama lessons. Years later I worked in schools as teaching support and never heard them read to children again.
