Professor Jeevan R. Sharma is an anthropologist. He is the Chair of South Asia and International Development at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He also serves as the Co-director of the Centre of South Asian Studies at the same university.
Prof. Sharma is an accomplished scholar who has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and Malawi. His research focuses on labor migration within the social, economic, and political transformations in Nepal, the Himalayas, and the South Asian region, particularly exploring the culture of migration, border crossing, and the gendered, classed, and racialised mobility of labor.
Prof. Sharma earned his PhD from the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. His professional experience includes positions at the Feinstein International Center at Tufts University from 2009-2011 and Save the Children UK from 2007-2009.
Prof. Sharma is the author of ‘Political Economy of Social Change and Development in Nepal’ (Bloomsbury, 2021); and ‘Crossing the Border to India: Youth, Migration and Masculinities in Nepal’ (Temple University Press, 2018; Bloomsbury, 2019).
Prof. Sharma is the co-editor of HIMALAYA journal and an associate editor of ‘South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies’. He is also the General Secretary of the Britain Nepal Academic Council (BNAC).
Over the past 15 years, Prof. Sharma has provided consultancy services to numerous development organizations.
