I want to change my dogs behavior. Not other peoples.

I definitely what you mean, but I think she's just saying that assuming that you know the people coming into your home we'll enough to be, well, coming into your home, that bit of help just while the dog's working on this can be helpful.

I have a GSDmix pup just a few days shy of her first birthday … she was six-months old (approx. as per puppy-doc) when she burst into my life. I’m rather mobility-disabled, either on a cane or rollator, but either way I can be quite wobbly. I’ve been working as diligently as possible - not near as much as should be done to train/teach my future service dog, but when I’m in a lotta pain I cannot move easily, nor concentrate - so my pup is still VERY positively jumpy reactive to people, other critters (sort-or positive depending on the critter), and chase-reactive to blowing leaves, paper, hopping frogs, bunnies, or scampering kitties! With people who are strangers that my pup is losing her mind over, I literally turn myself away from them and try to step on my pup’s leash in the sit or down position (not always easy because I cannot lift either foot high or quickly without losing my balance with the risk of falling) giving my pup the commands “no, off, sit” in my LEO (retired) authoritative voice. Some people think I’m yelling at her, but I’m not … my voice just gets a bit deeper (for a girl) and stronger … my voice has to cut through the brain meltdown of excitement my pup is experiencing. If I’m not able to get a foot on her leash, then I grasp the head of her leash and stiff-arm her down to my left side, holding her there in “sit” as best I can, giving the same commands. Most folks will stop approaching when they see my struggle, and I can ask them to wait until my pup settles down. My pup ALWAYS wears her “service dog IN TRAINING” vest in public and most folks respect that and do not try to touch her. I sure wish my pup would start to settle down and not be reactive to EVERYTHING that moves. I know she needs formal good canine citizen training, as well as official mobility/support/balance service dog training, but … as a retired municipal employee my pension does not stretch into the thousands of dollars it costs for that kind of professional training. I’m also hesitant to purchase any online training programs because I’m not sure of my capabilities to teach my pup, and I cannot afford the hundreds of dollars that would then be wasted ‘cause I’m not “smarter than a fifth-grader” (anybody remember that tv show?). Anyway, that’s my story … I love my pup, and she loves me very much (we have serious separation anxiety, too … she is a rescue who was abandoned at a roadside trash pile … no wonder there). We need each other no matter what!

Excellent suggestions. I have been told by several trainers to just ignore jumping and it will stop. All fine and good but YES others need to clue in and stop fussing over the puppy.

I’ve had my pup for 5months now.. she’s 7months old & a small breed. This is the thing I still struggle with constantly- every day it’s like I’ve never even attempted to teach her not to. And the problem is EVERYBODY ELSE. She’s a tiny thing- so I think in many peoples minds it’s not the same as when a bigger breed does it… but I STILL THINK ITS INPOLITE & something I don’t want her doing., she loves people- she gets excited by the stranger walking down the street., she wants to say hello to everyone & is super friendly. And I love that she’s friendly & sweet. BUT, I need her to not be so excited- and sometimes not quite so friendly. We’re a family of 6 and I have asked every member of this house to pls not let her jump up on them- it goes in one ear & out the other.. I’ve asked extended family, friends, neighbors etc. NOBODY LISTENS. Everyone sees her & greets her with so much excitement & encourages her to jump on them . I don’t know how I’m supposed to work on something when no one listens.,, and when I attempt to explain- weather I’m explaining to a family member or a stranger- I quickly get an eyeroll & tone as if I’m being ridiculous,, (because why would you possibly think it’s necessary to train a small dog🙄🤦🏻‍♀️) but two days ago on a walk some neighborhood kids were outside… very little kids.. she’s met them once or twice before- & they asked if they could say hello, so I broke her from a heal & told her it was ok to see them & she jumped all on them! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’d love to know more effective ways to work on this because trying to have everyone else work with me does not work

try having her on a lead when the initial rush of everyone coming over starts and have a distraction like toy or handful of food to distract the dog. i make my boy sit/.stand close on a short leash and i have peanut butter in a squeezy tube to distract him so he learns sitting by mum while poeple come is good cos i get food.

The problem isn’t other people. It’s that my dog jumps on me, people and other dogs.

The random people down the street who only wants to give my puppy a quick pet and a belly rub and go on with their day, spending 20 min following my directions on how to approach the puppy 😂 those are great tips, but I probably would have a friend do that with me rather than a stranger.
