This is an excellent question and something I have struggled with for the last 10yrs. My pitbull the sweetest most loving, silly, happy dog in the world... She seems to know that I'm the boss and is good with me, she listens to my kids for the most part but not super consistently. She's really bad with her dad tho and he actually encourages the crazy energy ... like her level of excitement equates her love for him. It's very frustrating, especially if Ive been working a lot and other family members are having more time with her, I come back to a dog that's not so great at listening anymore and I feel like I'm starting all over again.

So often trainers make videos with smart, relatively attentive dogs that are eager to learn/please. We have always had that kind of dog, so dog training came easy for us. A dear friend has recently asked me to occasionally dog sit, in my home, a dog that is so hyper, frantic really, that she seems to have zero attention span the moment the lead is released. Seems like she's on the extreme end of the bell curve for hyperactivity - too frantic to readily make connections between her behavior and consequences. It would be helpful to see trainers work this this kind of dog, one that really challenges the trainer.

that’s how my dog is, a goldendoodle whom is super hyperactive and though she is still young (about a year and a quarter) she needs to have some things fixed and i would love to see this. every time she is let off the leash she is crazy and has no attention span just like you mentioned.

Yes - this! My first dog was pretty calm and eager to learn/listen. My new dog (same breed and breeder) is NOT calm. He's very high drive and super enthusiastic and PERSISTENT. I often feel like I am starting back at zero continually. I'll think he has gotten it but it honestly depends on the day. He's a good boy and he's MILES better at 10 1/2 months than he was at 5 months, but it's been MUCH more challenging than my first dog (who I now know was like a unicorn puppy and I wasn't actually an awesome dog trainer! lol). And he gets at least an hour of walking every single day, plus play and training sessions several times a day. It can be frustrating watching a video like this and not getting the results as quickly or for things to go backwards the next day.

I’m going to try this training with my 1 year old Cocker Spaniel who we adopted. We’ve had him for nearly a year and he came to us with bad habits/no training. We are trying everything from commands/high value reward training/turning our back on him when he jumps and a couple of others things. But not getting very far because he’s so excitable and starts jumping again. The children in our road love Max but he is so powerful he can knock a child over and I don’t want children to be fearful of Max because he’s so sweet and loving. I’ve not tried the long line and stepping on the lead to prevent the jumping etc, so I’m going to try this tomorrow in my back garden because it’s getting late now (8.40pm in the uk 🇬🇧) so fingers crossed and wish us good luck 🤞 Thank you fir your video 😃

Our 11 month old puppy came with this issue. She’s a Jamaican Labrador terrier mix and she’s gorgeous but her claws are sharp. And she’s quite tall when she’s on her hind legs. I’ve only had her a week and a half she’s a rescue. I’m looking forward to being her forever mummy and Moe Moe being in our family. We also have a rescue cat who I’m surprised she gets on with so far. I do keep her on the lead in the house. After not having a dog for many years I only had one previously… she was a King Charles Cavalier. So chilled out. It was a big change I know I can do this and so can my family members. Our puppy is quite chilled generally. She’s very good otherwise and is a quick learner. I look forward to trying this technique with little Moe. I’m a new subscriber. Thanks for this appreciate it.

I use lots of treats when training my 9 1/2 month golden retriever. She's very food driven so it makes it way easier to get her to follow commands. I've trained a Belgium Sheepdog through the local parks and rec classes without treats but that was 25 years ago. Training techniques for dogs has changed. It's all treats and praises/positive reinforcement. I really love this type of training as opposed to telling the dog what they shouldn't be doing all the time. Instead tell them what you want them to do. It's great.🐶

I was ok with it when he was little but he gains about 5 lbs a month now 8 months at 55 lbs it's not that much fun! It really intimates my friends, so it's a real issue now. He's a very strong, stubborn guy! I wish I had thought of these videos sooner, he thinks he's in control and it's a real issue for me. So be careful!

About the "pushing might not be seen as a correction but a reward": so true. Buddy of mine had a Dobermann, monster of a dog, absolute sweetheart and loved to run into us full speed. When we (both pretty, large guys) threw him mid jump on the couch, he REALLY liked that. Was fun for everybody involved. The dog tried the new game with my buddys sister. Ended up sitting on her and licking her face. Still fun for the dog.

This video looks like itll be a game changer. The previous advice we got was nudge them away, and I just kinda took it as the one giving it to me has had dogs for 30+ years now. But as my girl and me get on in training I'm more and more realizing that that person just kinda... didn’t really train their dogs. And that the nudge makes it into a game makes so darn much sense but it's new info to me. Thank you so much We're gonna try this

  • @karyndrake7219

Oh yeah, just a few minutes my butt. I did everything you said BUT the dog is also a huge factor in this. Some dogs are harder to train than others and some dogs don't listen as well as others. Don't get discouraged if this doesn't work right away! Keep going and they will eventually learn ❤️

We just adopted a very excited 5-month old lab/retriever, and he has a tendency of jumping on people because he’s just so happy to see them lol. I’m on day two of trying this and can I say that it has worked wonders?? He’s a big boy so every time he would jump on us we would nudge him down, but that wouldn’t stop him until I tried this video’s method. Now even on walks whenever I say, “down”, he stops and sits. Only on day two and it takes one try of him jumping on me to not do it again repeatedly like he would. Excited to see where these videos take us. Thank you!

My Doberman turns 3 years old in Nov. 2021. I got him when he was 10 months old. He has learned some things pretty quick. But not pulling on the leash (especially when he is tracking a scent) and not jumping up to meet people face to face are two things he just won't learn.

Yeah I hear you. I have a Doberman that jumps a lot and I don’t think this leash trick is going to work for me. He likes to jump on me right when I get out of bed because he is excited to start the day. My dog does not always have his leash on, I certainly can’t put it on while he is jumping, and according to this guy, I shouldn’t push him down either. What to do lol. I love my dog by the way, he’s just a crazy puppy

Same here, the other issue is people don't really listen to me about turning away from her and reactivily start petting and cooing at her when she jumps on them and ultimately end up encouraging her behavior, she gets way too tunnel visioned with her excitement about company she can't focus any mind to me and kinda the same with house guests....

I had dogs all my adult life. A trainer said I should try attaching my puppy lab to me by his leash. Sounds crazy but my lab Ebony, (can you guess what colour he was?) was the best behaved dog I ever had. I was a foster parent caring for a beautiful baby boy at the time. So I took Ebony almost everywhere I went, even from the living room to the kitchen as well as out in the car. He followed right by my side, never tripped over him, he paid attention. We had stairs and he was always careful, he never squeezed by me through the door. He was fine when left alone in the house on the occasions for appointments, etc. I can’t take all the credit. I think it was a combination of genetics and bonding. His parents were guide dogs for the blind. He didn’t make it because he was considered too fearful. He is gone now and if I was young enough I would do it all over again. He made me so proud.
