    Same. I have so many supplies people have gifted me over the. Yeas because I'm "the artist in the family" and apparently in their lay person Minds that means I can pick up and work with anything, lol. I don't think I've ever held a chalk pastel in my life, but I have dozens of them. 😂

    @@Snow-Willow haha. That's funny. I have the exact opposite problem. No family member ever gifts me anything useful. I buy and stockpile my own supplies knowing that if I don't, I won't have anything to work with. My real problem is an erratic work shedule, and lack of predefined uninterrupted time to work. And lack of work space.

    This is a really good reminder. The only art supplies I have ever wasted are the ones I never used. The markers that were left caped and dried out. The decades old acrylics in unopened tubes that I could not reconstitute. Those were a waste of money not because I bought them, but because they never touched paper.😢

    Absolutely love the video and fully relate to the message. Only thing I dislike is tearing up the piece at the end. Bad art is something you put the effort into making, and it has value because of that. Keep on creating everyone!

    I dunno, I think ripping up artwork can be cathartic. If you allow yourself to rip up your art it shows that not everything you create has to be permanent, and therefore doesn't have to fit a standard of quality if you go "eh I can rip it up anyways"

  • @legendfinder

    @legendfinder

    Ай бұрын

    @@dragonflies6793 Imo it creates a new line for me, one of "Is this art something that's better off ripped up?" which circles right back around to just a different variation of "Is this art bad?", and I'd rather be less conscious of determining whether my art is "bad" or not. Plus my perception on a piece of art changes over the course of years, so something I thought wasn't my best work ends up becoming something I'm really proud of, but if I permanently destroyed or deleted it then well that's unfixable. That's just my mindset on it though, I'm sure it works differently for different people!

    This is really good advice. I have a bit of a habit I've been trying to break, of only ever drawing things I knew I wasn't terrible at. Recently though I've found that sketching 10 bad hands in a day led to a lot more improvement than letting the fear of making bad art make me attempt them only once every few months

    It's something I never think about now as it was several years ago, but I used to be very deep in the art criticism sides of the internet, and I think that is what has been stopping me from taking more risks and making those unsuccessful art pieces. It always felt like more of a "you are doing bad now so you shouldn't show anything until you're good at it." When in reality, doing it gives you practice ane skill. It bolsters you into becoming a better artist. Making stuff fearlessly allows you to take risks. It may end up being something that seems silly to have done later, but it made you happy when you drew it, so why not? - I think watched videos like these has not only helped my perception of art I've made now, but art I made in the past. I used to be super critical about it (and still can be) but, I also take a step back and try to think about it as I did at the time and its progression. It made me really happy at the time. It was an art piece and character I loved. A character I now have spent years improving my art with, allowing me to see just how far I've come. I used to be so worried about showing my art. About what everyone would think of it to the point I never even considered how I would've felt about it had I never stressed about how bad others may see it. I'm thankful that there are videos out like these from both you and many others. The focus on not only the destination, but the journey. The journey of both an individual piece AND the overall journey as an artist. It has made me feel much more confident in taking those risks and taking the losses, and I think that is really important.

    Not sure what it says about me, but Overly Aggressive Positivity/Encouragement is one of my favorite things! 😂 When people are basically going: "WHY are you putting yourself down, you silly goose!! Thats just silly!" Thanks for the reminder to not be so precious about materials, or making bad art. Especially breaking down the pricing! When you said you were using the Arches paper, I did kinda gasp 😅, but then you explained it was all just a dollar, and that blew my mind! Great great mindset shift Scott, thanks so much! ❤

    I needed this. I want to be good at art, and not being good at art is so discouraging sometimes, but it's as though I'm forgetting the whole reason I want to do art in the first place, which is for the enjoyment of doing it. Not for satisfying my precious little ego by making 'masterpieces', but the enjoyment of expressing myself in a visual medium.

    This applies to more than just art too! Like you mentioned, doing something because you enjoy it is worth more than the cost of wasted materials, and every failure and misstep are an opportunity to learn and grow. I’m working on my first full page marker illustration as I’m redrawing Spyro, my favorite video game dragon. I’ve drawn him three times before, and I love seeing how much I’ve learned and gotten better with each one, and even if I think I could have done a little better I still have fun doing it anyway. Even though I’m trying out new ideas and techniques with each one that I’m not fully confident in, I feel confident enough from my previous attempts that I can make something that still looks cool even if it’s not as good as I wanted it to be. So instead of trying to make it perfect, I’m just going to enjoy having fun and learning as I go

    Even a failure is a success. If something you've done doesn't work then you have learned something. Failure isn't losing if you're learning from it. Knowing what doesn't work for you is just as important as knowing what does. I fail much more than I succeed, but i keep learning from the failures. (Everything is learning for my ADHD brain)

    Great message. When I create art if the result is good then yay! If the result is unsatisfactory, I shrug my shoulders, and then I’m off to do the next piece. I just learned something that I never thought of before. I have stencils and I’ve never thought of using them in an artwork the way you did, thanks for the new idea. The only thing I won’t do is rip up my work. I keep the ‘bad’ art and occasionally I look at it. Sometimes I see redeeming qualities and think it wasn’t that bad, it might even be good.

When I was younger, I would make art without looking at it as good or bad; I just had fun seeing my imagination come to life, but now I haven't filled a sketchbook in 2 years because I'm scared of making something bad and thinking of myself as a bad artist. Which is so silly! Even though I'm not the best artist, if I don't draw I will never get better, so making bad art isn't a waste of time because it will teach you and make you better next time :) Thank you for putting this into perspective.

    I finished a painting I dislike recently. Seeing your videos and having this attitude really help honestly. Even though I technically could have wiped it all off since it was oil paint and wasn't dry yet, I didn't want to do that. I wanted to finish the painting call it done and put it out to dry and see if I start liking it over time. (This usually works tbh) I still don't like it, but I know some things I'm going to fix once the first layer is dry. And then I'm just going to ask some friends or family if they want it 😂 Some people just want art to put up. ANY art, bonus points if it was made by a loved one. I'm going to start on attempt number two pretty soon. Just getting the canvas all set up and everything.

    Thanks for this, I definitely needed to hear it today. I made two pieces of bad art, but I had fun doing it 😅

    What feels or looks "bad" to us is oftentimes beautiful and cherished by others. I did a photo realistic pencil drawing of John Wayne in high school. There was one spot where my dog had scratched the surface. It ruined the entire piece (for me), while my dad continued to ooh and aah over it. He loved it! My dad wasn't very effusive with praise, so I figured there had to be some redeeming qualities in the piece. I kept working on it, even though I personally didn't like it. While it was never officially D.O.N.E., it was eventually done enough for my dad and he had it hung up in his office for years. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sometimes it's just not up to us to decide if our art is good or bad or if it's worth anything.
