Trigger warning. Glad I’m old now, but disposable feminine hygiene has freed women possibly more than any other product. There is a huge push right now to put women back “on the rag” or those UTI traps (“cups”). If that makes you happy, you do you. But for those of us who camp, work outdoors, etc, these products are equalizers: just ask third world school girls ….

This week CVS has a program buy one and they will donate 2. I use coupons and discount coupons to get a lowest price and then donate what I buy to the public middle or high schools. Even in this country, days are lost at school because girls have no pads or tampons due to financial difficulties.

Appreciated that you counseled the young to avoid drinking/smoking/drug use. As one raised by alcholics, I do not drink, but am constantly amazed by the otherwise bright people I know that encourage me to drink. Somehow they believe that my life is incomplete without this habit! My stock response is that I only have to look at a piece of chocolate to know that I have an addictive personality, and at my parentage to know I have the genetic make up to be an alcoholic. But STILL, others think I should drink because THEY do! I have saved thousands of dollars over my lifetime by not drinking, not to mention the cost of DUI's (both financially, emotionally, bad decision making while intoxicated, etc.) If your podcast even convinces one person to do what they know is best for them, you have achieved your purpose in life.

I was a single mom at age 37. Lived out of garage sales and goodwill back when goodwill was cheap. $400/month child support and worked 3 part time jobs while going to school full time. The frugal habits that allowed me to continue to live in the 3rd wealthiest county in the country at the time are still with me. I might use 2 or 3 rolls of paper towels a.year. I fold and save to use again every side of a paper napkin. All plastic bags from any store are used as trash can liners. Etc.

I had to cut expenses to the bone with no thrift store within an hour drive and more expensive than yard sales. I turned to shopping yards with my mom and split the gas. Overtime I could get just about anything at yards cheaply. Clothes were $0.25-$1. I would by fall/winter clothes in the Spring and Spring/Summer clothes in the fall. We even got. $200 hammock for $20. Bikes, tents, chainsaws, pretty much everything even fresh produce. It was great bonding with my mom and quite the adventure.

I agree on all but the movie theatre movies. Our theatre shows all their regular movies for $5 on Tuesdays and gives us a bucket of buttered popcorn for free. I feel like its an amazing deal, for an afternoon out with a friend. I would spend more than that driving to our library and there wouldnt be a fresh bucket of movie theater, buttered popcorn there either. lmao I quit smoking a year ago and it was the best thing Ive ever done. I started smoking regularly at 13 years old and I was 59 when I quit. I hope I quit soon enough to make a difference long term. But either way, I feel MUCH better with my breath and ability to move.

I bought a 2013 Toyota Corolla in 2015. It had less than 15,000 miles on it. I paid it off in 2016, so no car payment. In 2023, it has less than 44,000 miles on it and runs great. Maintenance costs are low. I work from home, so I don't drive it much, and I don't use much gas. Everything I need is 5-10 minutes away: Church, grocery stores, the doctor's office, the dentist's office, and the vet. I occasionally need to drive downtown to the office (30 miles round trip), but not often.

If they're not dry at the end of one cycle I have to hang them up to finish for another day. All that said. None of my bedding sets is less than ten years old and, in fact, one set is about thirty years old, so I don't feel too guilty about those four sets.

Some of these are some really good tips, but I’d have to counter argue when it comes to bedding. Not everyone has a washer and dryer in their house and not everyone can wash the day that their sheets need to be washed. Say they have a pet and it has an accident in the bed or a baby that threw up in the bed or even they got sick, that doesn’t mean that that same day they’ll be able to take it to a wash house. They might have work and other obligations that they need to tend to before the sheets.

I don’t use paper towels any more either. I use old papers to clean up doggie messes like plastic bags like from water bottles or plastic bags that gets torn. I also save the package papers from any shipping items, the brown paper type to clean dog messes too, it works great and there’s always a lot of it to use. I also use the shipping box to place in trash on my porch if they’re small, so much easier to take out to trash can when I leave the house and save plastic garbage bags. I have only been buying necessities like food and clothes for the season and try to find deals. I use Roku and only subed to Max recently, that’s a splurge for me. I also buy sensor lights to put in kitchen and other areas, some are Solar lights I use in case of grid down and save energy. I am not a big book reader except the Bible and I mostly listen to it online for free. Most games I do free online but not often. As for fish you’re better off buying fresh caught fish, never from farms, they’re fed grains and are not as high in omega 3 s. I could use a vacation, can’t remember when I had one last. I never eat out any more because it’s too expensive and not healthy, I’ve cut out as many carbs as I can and intermediate fast now 16 to 18 hours daily, I’ve lost 19 pounds in 6 weeks so that’s a plus. I buy more meat and only certain vegetables that’s right for my diet so I am saving there. I only drink coffee, one in morning and water ruing the day…I use supplements and working on getting off Prescription drugs.

The Tightwad Gazette had an article about seeking the lowest level of an item or activity that you found acceptable and switching to that. I think the example was lowering the cost of your coffee. My example was switching to the internet to get crochet patterns and the thrift store to get yarn instead of going to JoAnn's to reduce the cost of my crochet habit but still be able to make the items I wanted. Is there something you have "hacked the cost" to make it cheaper but still acceptable?

Yesterday I washed my laundry completely for free, except fir the Zote soap bar I’ve been using. I caught the rainwater, I own the washtub and washboard, I own the clothesline and pins. All these things must be purchased up front, of course, but in a very few washings compared to laundromat or electric appliances, it becomes free. Free is good!❤

I use a bucket plunger method. My clothes get much cleaner than the apartment commercial washing machine. I don't have to haul it up and down stairs with my bad back and knee and it doesn't cost me 2.00 a load. Water is included in my rent so it's free to wash this way. I DID purchase an electric spin dryer to aid in how quickly my clothes line dry, but that is a convenience, not a necessity.

We had Amazon prime and shared it with our entire family in 2020. Used it often and at the time when no one was going anywhere, it was a huge convenience and savings! We have now moved and there is no Amazon hub near us. Everything takes a week and is delivered by UPS or another carrier, no Amazon trucks in our city!! Never thought that was something we would be without, so we canceled our prime. Wish I could do away with paper products fully, but the hubby isn’t onboard.
