Thank you soooooo much Stu to bring such clarity through the myst of all these awkward tips, which always seemed to be very "artificial" to me. And this tucked right arm, flex left wrist appeared to me very very confusing and painful for my old joints 🤣. I confess I tend to believe there is a true legitimacy when I watch coachs like Danny. Who, by the way is giving also sometimes some good tips. But since I discovered your videos I enjoy that you always bring problems back to their roots and let each one of us with a better understanding of our own particularities and abilities. This is a truly great video. The explanations about the right arm length affecting the radius of the handle/swing vs. how the left arm affects the radius of the club head/swing is fascinating. Also - that drill of using the lift hand to illustrate & isolate the "feel" of the right arm/elbow during the downswing is brilliant. I'll be implementing that into my practice routine (I swing for a min of 30 mins a day, putt every day, and chip 2-3 times a week).

Happy Saturday Stu! Interesting topic, it’s as if you are making these videos just for me 😂. After watching your “sequencing your swing” video which is probably my favorite, I finally started understanding the feeling I needed to grasp as it relates to forearm rotation / “shallowing” aka letting the club head move with gravity behind me when starting the downswing. I noticed that my right elbow naturally started anchoring towards my torso when doing so, but if I consciously tried to do it I would overemphasize the movement and hit shots way left of right, as you have demonstrated. Your video timing is impeccable, thanks for pointing out the reality here. Danny Maude seems like he’s genuinely trying to help folks, though I would agree his recent Pete Cowen videos only confused me 😅

This critique video references a recent Maude/Cowan that Mr. Cartwright admits he didn't entirely view and then misrepresents. I assume this is unintentional. Here's the deal. For situations when low ball flight and directional accuracy are most important, Cowan teaches a delofted impact method that is used as needed by accomplished golfers. It involves a delayed combination of tucked elbow and counter-rotated forearm through impact that is very effective but is very timing sensitive and takes substantial practice to coordinate. These points are covered as the M/C video proceeds, including DM's concerns that it will be too tricky for his typical subscriber. Golfers who grew up with UK/Ireland conditions commonly use this method by default, higher shots being the exception. With more roll-out and less predictable distance in the fairway, they also get very good at a lofted short game out to 100. Late in the video, Cowan makes the point that this way of turning of the face over and down can be partially incorporated into an existing swing by us mortals. Try it. It's subtle, all you have to do it even think about it, and it's enough. Cowan is not for everybody, but no instructor is. Maude has given him a fair airing in this and the chipping video with him.

But with Pete’s history and self assured nature -who might question that, but merely know better and appreciate the opinion or option. Hard to be in position to know more that those we seek to learn from.. but ,if as you seem to have done, every lesson and person is part of the ultimate package. HI Stu - I have travelled the elbow-tucking path recently and, as I stated yesterday in another video comment... I subscribe to letting the kinetic chain do what it knows. Overly tucking the elbow is not what the kinetic chain does but it (my right elbow) HAS to go somewhere... and near the hip is where it travels. I believe forcing body positions is poison, we suck at it and it doesn't work. Great video Stu! Best, Mark.

So I’ve been working on keeping head behind the ball at impact and have some shaft lean to “collecting the ball” in the release. For doing so I feel that I have to tuck my right elbow in and delay the strike a bit, and the results where great when I timed it. Maybe it just comes down to feel more than reality. We can agree on that every pro have the same impact position and the body needs to do stuff to get there. I can’t see how a tucked elbow ain’t one of the things that needs to happen.

Riveting lesson about tucking in right elbow! Watched the video you referenced of two well respected coaches, quite a difference of opinion! So started doing the drill you post here to get the right feel, have my arm move across my body as I turn back, then have forearm rotation to a degree. It definitely places the right elbow in a pretty decent spot. From there will work on pelvis and hip rotation/body turn through impact that you mention to insure chest and lower half move around the golf ball as right arm is being pulled in front of chest on the forward swing. This will be a key for my swing as I have battled with trying to keep right elbow into my side to avoid flying left elbow. At times it works great, but probably happens by chance.

@@GoodGolfCoaching Thank you! Will be going through your leg action videos for sure! One thing I struggle with is back pain in the past which I have worked on to strengthen. I also converted over to single plain swing for a few years with decent results because it was advertised as a “back friendly” swing. I just really didn’t like the dynamics of the swing though of keeping knees straight with a wide stance, and arms away from my body, etc. Anyways, back to having my arms placed in position to what you teach, which is more what I have always felt comfortable with and provides great ball striking. Just need to keep body back somewhat and off my toes during the swing. So definitely looking forward to your leg action videos as I’me sure you cover this🙂

Thanks, very interesting. What you show here fits precisely with what I have been learning about the right arm, forearm and elbow from other instructions, but you show what happens when you do it incorrectly. I have found as I try to improve that I do need to get my right forearm in the more vertical position you show, with the elbow a bit closer to the target than the wrist. Then on the downswing have the right elbow come in front of the right thigh. But you are quite right, one can overdo it and get into an excessively tucked position. I have done that to a degree and of course find that while I may make good contact, the ball will go to the right. On a par three, that means in the bunker or nasty rough off to the side. Bingo, par gone, bogey or double coming up. But if I work on keeping the right elbow in front of my chest as I turn back, not letting it get behind me, it will, exactly as you show, come down in front of my thigh with the right wrist in extension (bent back) but the face will be in correct alignment. It's complex, as you say. So many things to do right. It is easier on the range or in a practice bay to correct an erroneous arm structure with the next swing. Out on the course, it is easy to be distracted, to feel tension, be tired, forget, and of course you only get one swing. I have seen other good instructors who show that pros turn the arms back less than it appears. Once they get the correct arm structure, which you show, they only move the arms back a few inches. They do move the left bicep across the left pec, but the majority of the move back comes from turning the chest or torso, which, exactly as you say at minute 9, can only be done if you turn the pelvis. When you turn this way, you find that the right elbow stays in front of the chest and ends up roughly in line with the side of your shirt, not behind you. Then when you make the downswing the elbow does come down ahead of the wrist, as you and they show, but slightly out in front of you, not tucked in to the side and almost behind you. I do work to have my left wrist a bit bowed, in flexion, but it feels natural. If my left wrist is cupped it leaves the face open. Again, thanks.

My coach stressed this a bit a few lessons ago...I have a gap between my right arm/elbow and my right flank from shaft parallell in the downswing to just before impact. I have been unable to get that arm "tucked" much to his chagrin. I'm hitting the ball with good contact and hiting it relatively straight (I have a pull at times, and sometimes I push it out to the right). I'm more interested in results. My Index has dropped 8 points in the last year, so I don't stress about tucking my elbow. My bigger problem is that my right shoulder doesn't go down and then under (my shoulder tilt is left or near zero at shaft parallell in the downswing). When I promote shoulder tilt to the right, I hit it fat. Very frustrating game this golf. Thanks for validating what I've suspected about my right elbow.

Tucking the right arm under the left is in baseball, called ‘bat drag’. It’s something that juniors do and robs speed. And in golf you also have to manage the clubface and with that move, an excessive path. Through impact top golfers have their right arm in line with their shirt seam not jammed in front. And in 3D some of the greatest ball strikers today in fact go internal with the right arm on the downswing. In 2D video it looks external.

Stuart, there you go, again, being the contrarian. 😂 I saw the video you’re talking about and tried it to see if it would make me swing better. It didn’t, in fact, I was swinging worse, my balls were slicing and I hit a lot of shanks. Not to mention that it started to hurt my back and wrist, and seriously decreased my speed. I quickly realized that that move was not for me, and went back to my normal swing, which, by the way, naturally tucks my right elbow without me having to manufacture it. I believe that many of the “old school” teachers are just wrong and won’t change. This is why I mainly ignore them, because they have flawed ideas of how the swing should works. Keep educating us. Cheers.

@@GoodGolfCoaching Imho he doesn‘t do that in that video. He promotes this idea of spinning the right arm down after pointing out that this only works if you have a proper grip and „load the arm correctly“ which in your terms would be turning properly in the backswing I believe. He then assumes that if you spin the arm down the body will automatically do the right thing as a reaction to it. Plus his target group is Danny, a person who knows the basics and asked for an idea how to put more pressure on the ball. I cannot judge the validity of his or your teaching ideas because I am just a too bad of a golfer, so I will test and see who‘s ideas are helping me more.

Yes all the time Dennis; it normally starts with the realisation that all is not what it seems with the irons and the driver is just an extrapolation of whats happening with the irons. If the irons are truly awesome, i would alwasy go straight to Angle of Attack as an insight why you may struggle and then secondly to the strike. Hope that helps. Best wishes Stu 😊

He clearly goes over needing to rotate the trail forearm on the way down. Not the wrists-because that’s “rolling” the the club into impact. He talks about rotating the trail forearm and putting “pressure” down into the ball. He speaks a LOT about “pressure” in fact. Have a great weekend-thank you for your help.

Stu, love you and your vids - always bring a wry smile. However, the DM/PC video at no stage suggests ‘tucking the right elbow in’ or ‘hitting from the inside’. In fact at the start of the video PC goes as far as to say ‘the right arm needs to be loaded correctly in the backswing [for it to work]’ as you do here. I don’t agree with any YT downswing videos - generally- because you’ve got 2/10ths of a second to hit the ball from the top and if anyone thinks they can manipulate a golf shot in that time, good luck. As the great Peter Thompson (coach) says ‘95% of the golf swing is complete at the top of the backswing’. So I agree that 95% of downswing ‘faults’ are symptoms of earlier ‘idiosyncrasies’ in the back swing and the entire concept of making a ‘move’ on the downswing is flawed. But to insinuate that DM/PC demonstrated the approach you have accused them of here is plain wrong. PC even says ‘get the elbow out in front and track the body with the butt to the left’ which is an out to in feel and exactly what you profess. So, agree with get the backswing right and the rest will take care of itself, don’t agree with the assertion that PC/DM said what you’re asserting they did. Others have, but not them. PC even demos a drill which is pretty much the same as the one at the end of this video by holding on to the right elbow with his left hand. 😂 I think you should watch the DM video in full again.

Thanks for your insights, thoughts and feelings, always very welcomed. Best wishes Stu 😊

Ok, first you admit at 2:30 or so that "you didn't even watch the video". Second, the movement discussed in the Pete Cowen / Danny Maude video is frequently and exhaustively discussed by numerous legitimate youtube golf instructors (Athletic Motion golf using Gears, Milo Lines, Mike Malaska, I could go on). Third, I've been trying this, and in combination with the split handed drill, it has given me a first time sense of what a "pivot" and compression in the golf swing actually feels like. So, my conclusion is that you are engaging in "click bait" rather than trying to help people improve their golf swing. IMO, YMMV.

  • @GoodGolfCoaching

@AviationSceptic lovely feedback and really welcome your passion! I think you may need to appreciate click bait would mean the video does not back up what the thumbnail suggests, which it does; is the video antagonistic, absolutely, because I believe in what I coach as does DM and PC. I know PC and know exactly where the video was going. I am so happy DM and PC’s advice has helped you, truly I am, and long may that continue. When I’ve coached over 40,000 hours and coached tour players and won on tour, I think my views and expertise is evidence based, which is why I have conviction in what I deliver. Stu, Absolutely agree that the right arm should not be messed with in the downswing, and the DM video with PC is a portion of my life I’ll never get back! However ‘tucking in’ is not what is suggested in DM’s video, in fact the suggestions made don’t differ substantially from your philosophy. That’s my point. I would be interested in your interpretation of ‘shallowing’ now that 3D motion capture has confirmed that the top of the backswing is as ‘shallow’ as Tour players get.@@GoodGolfCoaching

This video just discredit (or over exaggerated) a golf swing taught by a very well known golf instructor. Top players have adopted this swing technique with positive results. For me, the "tucked right elbow" technique was a gamechanger in my golf swing. I guess find your swing that works for you. Like Arnold Palmer said ... "Swing your swing."
