Smoked for about 25 years, quit about 6 months ago. I will tell you when i quit, I felt like i was going to cough up a lung! It was intense! I started going to the gym shortly after stopping, and the coughing was even worst! I knew I was coughing up years of tar and nicotine, but the coughing fits scarred me a little. I turned to the internet, and found out that it was fairly normal. Some people cough more than others. After about a month, the coughing subsided and went away! No more coughing in the morning, or night ! I breath so much better, and food taste a lot better! Thus the 10 pounds i gained! lol ! And the one thing i do not miss is that smell in my clothes, and my skin. One more thing, the coughing spells kind of was a good thing. Every time I think of picking up a cigarette, i think about those intense coughing spells, and how long it took to get that crap out of my system. Good luck to everyone, either you will quit smoking or the smoking will quit you! At least that is how I felt.

I quit smoking just 5 days back. From 22 cigarettes on 20th July I had zero cigarettes on 21st. Just think of 1 day at a time. Don't think of longer term. I don't know know how far I will go but will power is everything. And avoid smoker friends and other triggers and keep busy for few days. First 3-4 days are pure torture. Craving is at it's peak. But with each day you feel stronger. Will power is must.

I smoked and smoked for a year. cigs and hookah. Then quit. I used an Ecig for a year following my quit of cigarettes. An Ecig will stop the healing process or delay it substantially. I never did get a smokers cough, i have always coughed if i chose to. I got rid of my ecig a year ago and have only vaped twice since. Both times i vaped it made the tonsil stones come back with a vengeance . I still have the tonsil stones stuck in my throat but they are going away .. It is a long healing process. I have hit the gym for 4 months building muscle.(never was in bad shape) also worked as a carpenter and for coke through the year that i have stopped smoking/vaping.= Lots of exercise. The lead carpenter would call me aqua man , making fun of how much water i would try to drink at work. I have taken the best vitamins and minerals, and even went vegan for 3 months eating fruit and veggies galore. By the way i only drank water and nothing else for 6 months. So today i can tell you that plaque tonsil stone shit is still hanging out inside me. My advice if you want to heal is to only consume water for a solid year or more. I do cough chunks of stones a few days after a good use of alcohol. Soda will bring that bacteria alive. Soda is the driving factor of stopping my cleanse. Smoking formed pockets for bacteria to build very easily on my esophagus and tonsils. So water/alcohol for a year and a half should allow it to repair in my opinion. Continuing with advice. Exercise and roar like a lion or like corey taylor.. girls be girls... for some reason i feel like girls talk the shit out of their system... lastly cleanse, marijuana if you can, and vitamins. get the body alkaline. To put it blunt my body was not made to smoke. i was the first out of my group to notice the tonsil stones. One of my friends felt like running was golden. I needed much more. If i had not smoked i could vape and drink soda. As of now i need to heal the esophagus and remove my tonsils before i can consider it again. Dont smoke! Chew nic gum and vape and go wild with caffeine before considering to burn one. PS my hair thinned a lot and i have regained a lot of my once thick hair with vitamins and minerals. Dont be afraid to rub scratch/rub your thinning scalp, it needs that.. Anything is possible guys. My mom survived a pole going through her face on the freeway after a truck ran it over and shot it up through her windshield. Went all the way through and out the back of her neck. I should not have got to see her in the hospital for the sake of bacteria danger but doctors thought she was going to die. So i saw her in ICU 2 days later. She recovered and went back to work 1.5 months later as a manager working 40+ hours a week driving 80 mins to and from work past her accident for 8 years before finding a closer job. Oh and her managers tried to fire her and make her hate life those 8 years. Single mother of 3 to top it off. Im still looking for the fire that my mom burns inside her. She went on the Montel Williams show to share her experience, may be here on youtube if you'd like to hear the story from her. Pretty Incredible.

and it is good sign :) your body is cleaning itself. I quit smoking last year after almost 10 years of smoking.. got my chest pain only 3 months after..and it was hard..one moment I thought something is really wrong :D you know that feeling like from Alien movie, that it seems something will erupt form inside out from you :D . Just do not give up :) all these affects can take up to 6 months , depends on many different factors. But soon you will forget about those and one day you will understand that suddenly you don't have any negative affects anymore. It happened to me, like for others too. Best luck !

I was wondering about this. I’ve smoked for 20 years and I’ve never coughed anything up, not even a normal icky sick cough. Shouldn’t I be drowning in that ick by now if this was true? Anyway, day four of quitting and yet to cough. I shall see.

Well, the Vitamin A tip was quite good, I think. I didn't know that. But that might have explained the great cravings I've had for carrots after quitting smoking. Otherwise I think the only thing you can do, is the ordinary healthy stuff: good food, plenty of sleep, training. There really are no short cuts in life. Good for you to quit smoking! It's bloody great! Big hug!

I appreciate the advocacy to stop smoking is popular in the health community, I guess people seeing the title, like me have already quit already, I wasn't looking at reasons to stop smoking or the damage done by smoking, but to know other than the quit ive done, what will repair it. I guess it was edited or shortened but apparently the only way to rebuild lungs is to take, 'supplements', which wasn't what I needed to hear. However this was from 2010, videos have advanced, science and tech has too, the amazing cure I had for smoking addiction, will also maybe lead to a way of providing medicine or vitamins directly to the alveoli, as well as helping smokers quit. I don't know if this individual has smoked for years, and quit themself, but after quitting we don't need warnings.
