Realistically, most people don’t need full frame with the advancements in APS C. The recent models have overcome the limitations that most people worried about and not many popular mediums require more than APS C can handle. Great footage!

In 2018 everyone, also videographers, rushed to get the A7III because of its features and the price. Even though it’s a hybrid camera with some severe limitations especially for video work. Today, the FX30 is a dedicated cinema camera for under 2K. 4K 120, SLOG3 and 10bit whilst having dual native iso, so much better battery life in a smaller body and so on. This should be most people’s dream camera because most of the features were unheard of just a few years ago and certainly not for this price.

It’s just about pairing the right lenses with the system. If you always use ff lenses on a s35 camera you will always feel like you’re missing something. Pair lenses made for s35 with the camera and the FOMO goes away.

Super 35 has pretty much always been the default for movies. Almost all the classics you know and love were shot on S35. Full frame is/was a stills camera term. It’s considered large format in filmmaking. Newer cameras have become popular, but S35 is still the default. Arri’s newest flagship camera is S35. The most important thing to do is choose a format that fits your story. No one will think less of your movie if they find out it was shot on a S35 camera.

If its to convince you for video that's simple, loads of major Hollywood films use the Arri Alexa mini which is super 35, and for the most part they also only deliver in 2K because the majority of cinemas only have 2K projectors - people caring about 4k or 6K this and full frame that is just utterly pointless

Man, I love the videos you put out regardless of which channel they're on, but especially the ones on here. And I 100, no, 500% agree with absolutely everything you said about the FX30. I only recently got one and have been falling in love with it more and more each time I shoot and edit the footage coming off of it. And the thing you said about hating camera comparisons is something I relate to more than I can explain. "Okay guys, look, I shot this footage in pitch black at ISO 32 000 and now I'm gonna zoom into it 400% to show how bad this camera is in low light". Like, ok, that's great, and it's also stupid af... Thank you for making videos like this one dude, I genuinely hope more people talking sh*t about the FX30 find it and have something to think about.

@@sloppysteaks Depends on the work you do. Light banding is still a massive issue when filming events, as you don't always have control of what some venues use for lighting. Often, it's obsolete lighting flickering at different frequencies. As much as I love my FX3, A7Siii, and likely the FX30, not having shutter angle in that context is an issue. Otherwise, fire away man, it's a solid piece of kit for the price, especially paired with some FF PL glass and a focal reducer.

Dangerous question... might get long... my lack of muscle memory and experience with the camera must be the biggest issue here. it's the one or the other setting, that i can't manage to find when its urgent and stuff goes fast paced. since it's mostly corporate run and gun or multi-cam that we do, working with 2 FX6 some blackmagic pockets and my own cameras (GH6, S5, JVC LS300) the fx 30 is not in use as often and ends up being the wirelessly transmitted cam on a gimbal or a far of wide counter shot most of the time. not fun to get to know the camera then. I'm sure some days of focused work with the fx30 camera would "debug" it for me it's just my habbits/ my brain and it's prefered logic i guess - hated to work with FX6, too (still kinda do) but i got used to it and know the essential stuff. what makes you prefer/look at the sony/ what is missing on the lumix'? @@sloppysteaks

Like the fan, the front record button, 2 card slots, the mounts, you know this little things. When I bought it I seen it as a sleeper hybrid camera but I’ve been struggling to get the image that I want out of this thing but I know it’s possible because you and many other creators are doing it. This is the amazing part of your channel. You literally use the gear you have and test in different situations. In a good period of time. Making actual film and photos. Having a real use, knowing, learning, and showing the process and results. I made weird comments in the past, and my english is bad, but I like the videos and photos you produce. Good stuff.

The only gripe I have with my FX30 is that it's HDMI instead of SDI, and that's only because I've grown to love SDI in my day-to-day shoots when working with Alexa's and whatnot. Can't wait to get my hands on Caleb's Cineback cage, or as you called it, "client mode" lol. That'll basically turn it into the box camera I've always wanted.

I love my FX30. I'm a freelance videographer and documentary filmmaker, and I also do videos for my 9 to 5 at the government agency that I work for. I've used this camera with the TT Artisan 17 and 35 mm lenses. Both of those lenses have an f-stop of 1.4, and I'm blown away by how those lenses have saved my butt on the FX30. The footage that comes from this camera with those lenses, as well as the sigma 18 to 50, are amazing. I just ignore the haters.

Currently shoot micro four thirds and the only reason I want to upgrade to full frame is so I don’t crop out all the swirly bokeh of the Helios lens I want and have to buy a speed booster. Otherwise sensor size really doesn’t matter much to me.

The minimal interest in this camera is bizarre. Seems like a hidden gem. When I was living MFT speed booster life chasing that old school S35 I'd have loved something like this. The lack of replies and or/arguments in the comment section is also strange. I'll add some much needed spice and note that Deakins becomes physically sick in the presence of an anamorphic lens. kekeke

Thoughts on the ZV-E1 mate? I know it gets hated on quite a bit but it shares the same exact sensor as the FX3 and A7SIII but has a super small form factor for that run and gun shooting style like a lecia you were alluding to. I don't want to rig up my camera or shoot long form content so I'm leaning towards it over the FX30 because of its form factor and capabilities! Would love to hear your insight! Of note, I get a student discount on it so I get it for $1900!!

Just got one last week as my B cam to the FX3. The appeal was actually the APSC. The availability of cheap cinema lenses for that format is bonkers. Plus if I ever get the Komodo X, it's an easy transfer of lenses.

100% - I mean ideally a mark II of the FX3 has a crop mode but I’m starting to doubt it. imo the ideal camera is full frame with a full featured S35 mode (like the burano)

@@sloppysteaks that was such a bizarre shock when I first bought my FX3. I was digging through every menu for apsc. And it just wasn't there. Even though it was on my a73. You can technically zoom in to APSC crop with clear image zoom.. but it's just clunky

  • @sloppysteaks

@@ScottJeschke it’s also strange that Sony doesn’t give you the full 6k on the FX30 over HDMI - I don’t really care about raw but if it did open gate out the HDMI on the FX30 that would be awesome. It’s got a weird cropped 4.6K ProRes raw mode. I use clear image zoom on my a7iv sometimes to go like 1.3x and I can use the nightwalkers on it in near FF. I’ve always wondered if clear image is worse on FX3 than a7iv because it has less resolution. who knows. that’s some Gerald shit to figure out.

@@sloppysteaks thank God for Gerald , haha. Yeah, I feel like open gate could easily be a firmware offering. But it's just sony being Sony, and not letting us have it all. I have to imagine the a74 has better clear image zoom than the FX3 with that 7K sensor. Personally, I've never been blown away by clear image zoom on my FX3. On the other hand, Gawx uses it all the time, and his stuff makes my stuff look like it's shot on Fisher-Price, so what do I know? 😂

I have the FX30 (and A6700, exact same sensor) and it is great and all but honestly I tried the FX3 once and it is just mindblowing. Imo there ARE some situations (even if you don't shoot dolphins at night haha) where the 12800ISO comes in really handy; yes you can work it out with the ISO2500 on the FX30 but still, the image is so, so much cleaner on the FX3 in these situations.
