Very interesting! I've been keen to try and stop buying more stuff as I've been decluttering for the past month and feel close to finishing, for now! I've realised after 40+ years that I actually tend to spend more money when I feel happy. Of course after the spending, I can feel quite low so I'm still trying to figure out how not to put myself on a downer and find something else to do when I'm happy - difficult as someone with social anxiety and depression, but as you say, awareness is the first part of figuring out a better way forward. My best repair was a battery recharger I bought new. When I opened up the packaging, I dropped it on my wood floor and broke a couple of bits meaning the holders for the batteries were loose at the connection points. Morally, it didn't feel okay to call the seller and claim it had arrived damaged, so I cut down a few bits of a bottle cork, and wedged them to hold the batteries in place. Th charger worked with no issues for 4 years before conking out!

I have this problem and this really helps, especially the part about saying no (I can't do it either!).

Asking yourself the questions really helps. I wish I had done that before I bought some of the things in my house.

It is best to casually let your friends and family know you are decluttering in advance and explain the problems owning too many things are causing you; then if you get a physical gift, say thank you and try to display it for a year, after that, it is a new birthday, a new Christmas, etc., and you declutter old gifts afterwards. If you don't like the look of repaired items, think of what caused the failure in the first place and dedicate yourself to buying a replacement item that won't fail in the same way. It is no good to buy the same thing knowing it will break in the same way.

Great points! Agree 💯 Always best to buy quality, but sometimes it can be difficult to afford.

Gift giving is often about the giver and not the recipient. They're on a journey too.
