I’m trying to learn traditional inks and cross hatching. My view is that it forces me to admit to my mistakes without an “undo” button. This way I can see the quality of my lines and also my screw-ups and accidental overly long lines. It’s tough but I do love playing with ink and paper!! I’m still bad at it but it’s fun!!

Agree about lazy hatching! I seem to fall into that trap a lot and need to smack myself over the head for going down that path!!

Welcome back! Love the recommendation! So true about adding those spot blacks. I read the UK based Commando Comics which are all black and white. The spot blacks and hatching really give the art a great sense of depth.

Perfect, this is exactly what I was looking for. Especially about not closing in all the lines- I've been struggling there because it IS easier to fill later, but I think it's what's holding me back from liking my lineart and then end piece. Thanks, man!

Best thing about Scott is he can just draw himself a new beard whenever he needs it. Also, thanks for the amazing tips. I love artists who teach us things like this, it's much appreciated!

I just started my comic and this advice is awesome! Especially because my first few comics and maybe even my first series are going to be done in black and white. I never thought of not connecting lines and allowing the reader to close them themselves. As well as using black so strongly! Thank you so much

First time watching, SUB'd. Its true, I see a lot of digital inkers who close up their shapes and everything not only looks less exciting but also very similar to too many other artists. You've got to throw down some original lines. At least mix up your influences. Great recommendation! Love Stuart Immonen's work and missed hearing about this project. ...until now! Thanks.

Congrats on the house!! Buying in this market is a nightmare right now. But the office looks great and, while I miss the beard, totally looking forward to new content!! I just recently started on my webtoon and I'm still in scripting and drafting process (never written a comic or manga in my life) but I just finished my first short comic about my characters and its thanks to your videos for helping me understand the process a little more.

Nice! Yeah, I think these tips still apply to manga, although maybe not the spot blacks as much, but definitely the hatching! Watching those artists create amazing tones with hatching is wild.

I love your tutorials! always on point and informative. I am quite guilty of messy hatching myself. I've been wondering for a while; when do you decide to go for cross hatching? like in that drawing you did normal hatching for the majority, but used cross hatching for the hair only.

This is a really good question! I think in my mind, I do it for texture. I usually use single-direction hatching for smoother surfaces like skin, whereas the cross-hatching is for more textured surfaces, like the hair. Also, cross-hatching tends to get "darker," so if I need it to feel like it's going all the way to black, I use that. But really, those are NOT hard and fast rules, so just do whatever feels right, and hey, if it doesn't work, just erase it and do it the other way! :)

This is my first video, and I've never seen you, but after you mentioned the beard it's all I noticed.

scribbles can look great on a piece, but it depends. in your example, it didn't work out at all this is completely based on my short experience, but I think they look better in smaller sizes and on places like a loose cloth or something

Comic book companies like DC & Marvel don't let inkers do inking traditionally on paper nowadays, although they started digital coloring since the 1990s.

This is incorrect. M/DC don't care how you get your inks done, as long as you do it and do it well. Many artists CHOOSE to ink digitally both for speed and editability, but that's a different story than the company forcing them to do so.
