It places you - if only in part - in a position of power, they are being asked to follow a command you've given, most police will find this uncomfortable (or even intolerable) as their entire self-image is built on authority, they are used to a whole class of people (non-officers) being beneath them . . . to you it's simply asking for them to identify themselves, to them it's seen as hostility, a sort of attack on their status.

It's embarrassing how bad UK police are . Totally unprofessional,what a pair of clowns . What has happened to the UK police ?

You( we) have to differentiate between a legal demand for ID, and the" we would like/ can you give" --the lawful demand may still be iffy, as cops are full of shite,and like to bluff, but a request to ID, is just that, ---- asking.

And thats why the police of the UK are so inept. Her face is gold, what she needs to understand that inside that building she might have some sort of bizarre power, but outside, she is nothing, less than nothing.

Not all police wear uniforms. A lot of officers involved in white collar crime do not wear them.

They lied about being on a call , they went shopping. As you said they got a call to leave you alone. Please keep up the great work reporting on crown employees over stepping there authority.

Clearly some illegals have probably been living there, as apparently they had huge problems down that road with it being a pickup point, for illegal immigrants, waiting in big groups, for cash in hand work. Specific circumstances require you to give your DOB to the police NOT standing in public doing a legal activity. Lucky for her a call came in which saved her from embarrasing herself further. Id want to trick these clueless coppers into arresting he then i could do them for unlawful arrest

No one is required to ID in the UK, ever. You can ID to the custody officer to make life easier but you can go to court as John Doe. The police can use certain methods (finger prints etc.) to ID you once you have been charged.

What is it with coppers today and their reluctance to identify themselves to a member of the public who asks them who they are. I was proud to display my name badge and collar number, and anyone who wanted to know was told my first name as well. Didn't really have to tell them where I was from as I stood out with a bright yellow jacket and white topped flat cap. Of course the the big white car, red stripe, and bar light gave the game away that I was a traffic cop. Sad to see those days gone when I worked for the publics protection.

Hi D J E, another interesting conversation with individuals who do not understand thew difference between their civic duties and their own concepts of right and wrong. This persistent desire to have members of the public provide personal details is an obvious expression of the frustration they feel because just because they are in the job they do not have any special powers, all they have is the same limited influence that any of us ever have and the reason they joined in the first place was because they think that power is not enough.
