You always want use a backing plate when you sand because your fingers provide uneven pressure that digs in. Remember varnish and pain are micron thick only. And a varnish wet sanding is done with P4000. The paint motion is wrong too I'm afraid : you want to do regular coats with parallel motion at the same distance to the surface. You start to spray out of the area, then stop spraying when you exceed the area. 50% overlap. The conclusion was predictable : wasted time and money to avoid a professional respray which you will do anyways.

I learnt to rattle can from the best teacher going for it, cringed watching the application method you used, but it's great that you showed how not to do it and learned from failures

I've watched a lot of videos on this. I've come to the conclusion that it's best left with the professionals, and probably more cost effective unless you already have all the primers / buffers and polishing tools.

A couple of videos in a few days. What a treat for the weekend x

It kind of worked out in the end 😆😆

I did a not too dissimilar job just to make it better than it was. I used brown packaging tape to lift off the loose top coat. I didn't stop applying tape until it lifted clean of top coat. Degreased and then spent 3 days applying spray can acrylic top coat just to make the finest application I could. It would never win any prizes but for the price of a single can and 5 rolls of tape it was very passable especially on a 13yo car.

It’s not the end of the world. Thankfully now sorted. Positively looking at it lessons learned and made for an interesting video! x

Such a great video. There was me thinking I might have a crack at my brother's lovely old Mondeo - which he just left under a tree for three days then took to a car wash only to see the bonnet clear coat give way (badly). I reckoned I could have a crack at it because, you know, what could possibly go wrong when you have no idea what you're doing but have KZread videos to "help"! Everything apparently. Off to the body shop!

😄 exactly! It's a bit crap that the videos that come out top in the KZread search results (at least for me at the time) were ones with amazing results using these methods. Gives you a false sense of security!

Loved this video even though you didn’t get the outcome you wanted.

Rustoleum is the only rattle can I would ever use to paint a car. I used it on my 96 Camaro and I actually thinned out the paint and rolled it with a foam roller! LOL! Not sure if you guys over seas have rustoleum or valspar or trimclad but those are the only paints I would recommend using outside of automotive paints. The rest like Krylon and even Duplicolor are trash. Ive used them all. Rustoleum was the only one to survive a fire, a small tornado and a drive to california and still put a shine on.

Great videos Vikki. Well done. Yea, we had the clear coat fail on our 2008 Mini Cooper on the bonnet and door window ledge. Caused by Seagull sh** on the paint for up to 10 days while we were away sunning ourselves. Briefly tried rubbing it down but could see not helping. Cure for the problem was traded it for a nice Vitara S.

Very good, I would have kept it with the flawed paint. I once had a right hand drive jeep type vehicle that was used to deliver post here in the states, I painted it with a bunch of rattle cans. Didn't bother to tape it off either. There was no trim to remove and put a razor to the glass to clean it up. Ran well & looked good for years after that. But it's good you at least tried. Your after paint job looked remarkably like the paint I had on a chrysler car I bought back in the 80's...and I bought that new. 80's American cars weren't known for their quality.

Lol... and funny you mention a jeep. I have a feeling my Granddad years ago said postmen's vehicles are right hand drive. Unless I'm imagining it? He was always looking for a vehicle when he'd go to America for months at a time.

It is possible to get good results from a rattle can. I resprayed a door with rattle cans and it looked great. Better than the rest of the car. Lol. But as many people have said. Use a block when sanding for even pressure. Long even strokes with the paint, spraying off the edge of the panel. Short wiggles with the can leaves an uneven finish. Warm the paint before spraying and practice on a board before starting to get the speed and distance correct. As soon as you notice the pressure drop from the can, move to a new can. A compressor and gun is a far better option. Which is why it's often better to give it to a professional.

Bless you 😂 don't blame you for having a pop though before spunking 300 knicker on it (that seems like bundles just to spray a bonnet to me). Spraying evenly from a can is near impossible, a real challenge. I would've rang around the local scrappies and seen if anyone had a Mini Cooper bonnet in red, you might have got one for peanuts.

Brave, very brave. The pressure washer didn't cause it, it just revealed an issue with the clearcoat. Think I'd have been inclined to buy a 2nd hand bonnet in colour and see if that was cheaper. Bottom line this is all about practice, experience and patience, I have none of these. One of the best channels for this sort of painting is Chops garage, the most honest car dealer in the UK. He is king of the rattle can although he does get his paints mixed up properly as I wouldn't trust Halfords. However I'm not sure he'd have taken on a big panel like this as he does mostly smaller repairs and knows the limitations of this method. But you've got to have a go haven't you!

One day though I will have a go .... on someone else's car ;-)

@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK He is very good and shows the challenges of running a used car business at the lower end of the market. Gives you some confidence about working on your own car although I haven't been brave enough to do any paint jobs yet!

Have painted motorbike petrol tanks and frames in the past with reasonable success, but when tried large areas have ended up with a similar finish to your bonnet. If i need touch up paints i go to humberside paints in scunthorpe. They do rattle cans which are better than a lot of the car shop stuff.

When you look inside a car body shop, they use temperature controlled & air filtered spray booths with expensive spray gun equipment… plus the skills! DIY spraying at home with a rattle can is difficult! 🚘 At least you had-a-go 👍

Ouch you live and learn - the best option would have been to recycle a bonnet from a breakers yard in the same colour for £150 👍 it looked like someone had already carried out a poor repaint before so the only way to guarantee it would have been to take it back to bear metal and start again.

We’ve all been there Vikkie, very well done for trying, Rattle cans are only good for small jobs really, shame that all that caressing went to waste 😂 One of the things with red cars is that under the old type orange street lights it can show up like a sore thumb like a yucky orange/red Well done anyway

Nice n steady side to side, slightly overlap the spray so you don't get lines. When you watch someone with a paint gun, they usually do 3 light coats. But in reality, outside, with wind, it is or can be difficult to actually get enough paint on to the car. Once you have a colour that is the same all over, you can do the lacquer. This you have to have a slower side to side motion so that you get plenty of it on the car. You also need to be close enough so it doesnt dry in the air and end up like dust. (test on the masking, totally wind dependant) It is possible to get perfect results from a DIY, Im going to do my bonnet on my 2006 Audi A4, which has just started peeling.

I would have advised to have the bonnet done by the professionals. you need the right tools and that touch to do it right. car bodywork is an art....

A pressure washer hasn’t caused that , it’s lack of polishing /waxing that has allowed the sun to damage the paint (minis paintwork seems to be very susceptible to this , minis are junk). Then once it starts peeling a pressure washer just speeds up the process

I tried to spray the wing of my car once and I just couldn't get the shine rite. It just looked dull. Spraying cars for me is not a fun job 😆

Did I hear correctly, a garage charged £300 for a respray? For a Toyota Yaris I was quoted £2000.

A red car with lacquer peel. Surprise surprise...

Rattle cans on a hot day in the sun is not a great combination. Maybe for a next time just buy a cheap spray gun and ask is you can use or borrow somebody's/dad's (?) compressor for a while. A bigger and more even spray pattern makes a lot of difference (if the surface is prepped correctly).

Not sure I'll bother again... unless this car is another 10 years old and I'm skint 😂 I'd heard that since regarding cans on a hot day. Is it more the humidity? I'd seen in a video that it's best to warm the panel as much as possible... but again... following it turned out to be a disaster.

Painting a car is all about the prep and it is a lot of work and the paint and chemicals are expensive.

Tell me about it 😅 The only positives that made me carry on filming (as I'd decided at the time to not share it), was to tell the story to help others and question is this DIY job really worth anyone's time compared to quotes they get. There's way too many variables that could go wrong and no matter how good someone's video is on this, I'll never do it again lol

And the moral of the story, " stick to what you know"🤔

Should have had a proper Mini Vikkie get it done right in a proper body, I know I worked in the body shop at Rover, them aerosols are not cheap where you are open to contamination and all other stuff, Take my advice and take it to a Body Shop sweetheart !!!.

I think I've heard the paint work has to be fairly good/smooth underneath.

The drip marks was water in the paint, the cans and the bonnet were too cold and holding condensation, should have run the engine to warm the bonnet and put the cans in a warm bucket of water for 10 mins and dry the cans before spraying, bonnet probably only needed a light sanding with 1000-2000 grit paper and then a good polish and light compound like g10 and you wouldn’t have even needed to paint it 😅 also it didn’t need primer all over before paint, just the bare metal bits, could have just sanded whole bonnet to 800 grit and painted directly onto the paint as it would be as though adding another paint layer, second coat should be a thick sprayed on coat without making the paint run to get a good gloss finish also, and you probably wouldn’t need laquer, just wet sand with 2500 grit after paint and then polish

@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK please ignore the above advice its a 2 stage paint meaning it has a base coat(colour) and top coat (lacquer) if you polish the base coat, you will just burn trough and got to metal/plastic, Im a paint sprayer by trade,

Sadly pealing lacquer can't be fixed with sanding and compounding. The yellow bits on the bonnet after sanding is the original primer showing threw. You only needed to really spot prime the area that had sanded threw as this stops the yellow changing the colour of the basecoat (red paint) and helps to smooth out where the layers of paint join up. Im thinking the paint reaction (pickling paint) could have been the solvents in the paint getting under the clearcoat, more than likely where there was still some loose lacquer area the sanded area. Id not listen to what people say about having to use a sanding block when keying up old paint or sanding out scratches/lacquer peel etc as long as you sand in a south west to north east direct while keeping your fingers pointing north (moving on a diagonal) dont use your whole hand as then there are many different firm points as this mothed and using your fingers while moving in straight lines will cause uneven surface (tram lines). right idea on spraying just a bit quick and lose overlap but with practice you would get the hang of it im sure. if its something your interested in getting to grips with then it could be worth getting an old car panel or piece of metal sheet to practice on. I would be more than happy to give some advice and tips. Once you can spray paint you can paint loads of stuff, change the colour of your kitchen cabinets every year, make and paint MDF furniture etc

Lot of frustration and waste of time trying do these kind of things on your own. Better to save money and take your car to the people who really knows how to repair the paint damages.

Nope because a bonnet must be the least forgiving area of car to paint. Have done small bits of trim to colour code in the past and that went well but a large panel can never be done with a rattle can. Fair play for trying though.

Your spray technique is terrible and 2k lacquer cans will give you a much better finish. You don't need to respray the colour either. There are a couple of really good videos on how to do this succesfully. You're a much better carpenter.

OR, go to a body shop, and pay to look over someone's shoulder, as they work. A case of beer, pizza, or cash works. This is a trade. A few tricks and experience, you will get it OR, appreciate results more. Plus, everybody has to learn. Desire is a big factor. Car number 10 , you will be a professional, laughing at your reply.

I’m proud of ya for giving it a whack! And to be honest if you were a little more confident and patient you could have done a great job. Easy sweeps while spraying one coat at time doesn’t matter how many wait for it to go tacky then the next coat let it dry then same with the clear coat and use a sanding block (side to side up and down and not in a circle) and I bet if ya sanded your clear coat with wet n dry 2000 then 3000 before you buffed it using compound that job would of been a million times better 😎 some friendly advice well done
