***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 3 new videos every week! Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!

Susan Shanks I watched one video where the woman said ummmm every other word and her thought processes were all over the place. It took her so long to make one point. I did learn a couple of things but this lady is so much better. She’s thorough and good at teaching. I may have my nerve up to try this now.

Plain and simple, I have been canning since the mid 70's and if I can do it, so can you. My (then) wife was scared to death of the pressure canners as was her mom. She never got over it but she let me can all I needed to can. Veggies from the garden. Wild game, even fish and butchered meats, stews and pickles. Canning is fun and you know what you are eating. I just got a new 23 qt canner last season. It was my 4th canner. Here is a hint: when you buy a new canner, get 3-4 extra seals for that model. I have had to relegate 2 of my older canners to the soup line because the company has discontinued making the ones I need. If it can't seal, it is no longer a pressure canner.

This very nice to see a young person canning and showing so many people how to do it. Most people are a live today because they had to can their food because there was no electricity for freezers, coal and wood stoves, I learned from my mother 70 years ago and still can everything except chickens. You save money and it tastes better. I have 3 presto's and my favorite the all American 921 canner given to me 20 years ago by a old friend, GOD BLESS

Being completely new to canning (I haven't canned yet! I've just sent my first water canner back, unused, because I realised I need a pressure canner 🤦🏼‍♀️) I've been watching hundreds of hours of videos like this. They usually drag on with pointless chat, or I can't stand the voice (shallow, I know, but whilst watching long videos you do notice it!) and I usually end up switching off before the end. This video was so informative, no pointless chat, and I was shocked when it came to the end that over 20 minutes had passed! Thank you so much 🙏. I'll be spending a lot more time on your videos in future 😁

People,,,, don't forget you can pressure cook meats in your canner as well. Those tuffer cuts of meat can be fall apart tender in no time. Your seasonings will be all the way through the meats. You cut down the cooking time considerably!! A pressure canner is not a one trick pony!!! Sarah, I am so glad to see people teaching/passing along this knowledge! I was raised up with with canning/pressure cooking as a staple. Those fish with y bones in there fillet, just pressure can or pressure cook and the bones just crumble up, just like those canned in grocery store. If you like street tacos (who doesn't right), you just pressure cook your meats (goat, beef, or wild game) and you have great fall apart meats for taco Tuesday. Time saver aswell, cook larger cuts for several meals. Sorry for being so long winded, just it's a great tool most homemakers, homesteaders, or those on a tight budget don't think to use. Keep up the GREAT WORK Sarah!!!

You did a great job. I remember my mom pressure canning back in the 60's. However I remember there being a little more adjusting on the heat up or down to get the weight to gently rock...but not too fast. I don't think you mentioned that. If it gets to rocking too fast it could blow the weight off the vent and hot water/steam will shoot out of it. Another thing you might mention in todays texting world that this is not an instant pot that you can set and forget. You must keep close and be attentive, especially if you have an electric stove...mine occasionally heats up for no apparent reason and I have to adjust it down. This would be catastrophic if you weren't closely monitoring your canner. If gas weren't so expensive to run to my house I would have switched over years ago!

The Presto canned has the weight jiggling all the time. The older Mirro Magic canned has 1 weight with 3 holes..5, 10, and 15 lbs. The Mirro is supposed to jiggle, them stop, then jiggle again in a minute or two. Mom and Granny always had the Mirro..I still have them. The New Mirro has e separate jugglers that look like the Presto. They may constantly jiggle, I don't know.

Very good video for the beginning canner. As a 40+ year canner, I don't have that kind of time. The timer goes off, I remove the weight, 5 minutes later the jars are out & covered with a towel & I have moved on to another batch. I start in the evening & will do 5 to 6 batches before bed time. I'll do 200 to 300 jars of various items of a season. Good eats till spring.

How did you know my one big fear! My fear came from my mom. Something with a pressure cooker happened back in the 1950’s with her and her fear transferred to me. She would not talk about it with, it happened before I was even born. Now I have a presto canner and I’m ok now, but still have some residual fear. Thanks, this video was very helpful and I need to can more and be able to enjoy it. You are a great teacher, not sure if you have formal teaching training or it just comes natural to you, but I just wanted to say that 😻👍❤️👌🏻

I just purchased a 16 qt. Presto canner. Like many others, I had to talk myself into buying a canner. My grandmother didn't have a pressure canner, but a pressure cooker. One Sunday, someone in my family removed the pressure gauge too early an it exploded. Just wanted you to know that you video has been very helpful. I have read my manual and am going to try it.

If i can make a suggestion.... Really research canning. I had no idea what high acid foods and low acid foods really were. High acid foods you can water bath. Jams and jelly's, it became clear why so many fruit jellys call for lemon juice. I was thinking WHY, I'm not making lemon strawberry. Then it hit! Ohhhh the lemon takes the low acid fruit to HIGH acid. DUHHHH, LOL.

My grandma was neighbor's with the presto cooker family. They all had victory gardens during that time. When their tomatos were harvested Mrs presto brought over her pressure canner. My mother remembers the pressure cooker exploding and tomatos went everywhere. That was the original test kitchen I suppose. Love your channel btw.

I’ve used a pressure cooker ever since I was a teenager with my mom. It was like the one you used here, but had a handle on it. That was in the1950’s. We always cooked our potatoes for mashed potatoes in it. Never had a problem with it. It worked great. Of course we used it for other things too. Loved it.

Dorothy Lopez pressure cookers are not pressure canners. You could presumably pressure cook in a pressure canned, but definitely can’t pressure can in a pressure cooker. So be safe and don’t try can in your pressure cooker.

The county extension office in each county will give you the exact information for your area and most have canning books with recipes. It is very important to know your altitude and how many pounds of pressure to use for your area and altitude. Very nicely done.

I have asked mult. people how to can in this Presto canner, without a guage, without response. I have a presto like canner and all I have is the weights. I was a little nervous using this one but your directions were perfect. This canner was my mothers and will use it now but still would like to get an All American for larger batches. I live about 1010 feet above sea level so I guess I will be safe and use the 15 lbs of pressure. Thank you so much and just love your video's. Kim
