Thank you! Bokeh is so fun!
Beautiful work on those big paintings! I love the looks, but I still don’t get how to do the backgrounds. So with the dark, the idea is to use tape or something to mask everything off and then use thick paint to cover it all? I love dark backgrounds but getting the paint dark enough has been a challenge for me. I’m bummed that the camera is so zoomed in on most of the paintings, I can’t tell how the background looks with the overall painting 😢

Thank you. I was bummed the camera was so zoomed in too, but I couldn’t figure out how to change it. I’m only about 4 videos in on editing in any way more than just taking out pieces of the video. I’ve since learned how to do that, but sadly it’s too late for this video. I don’t always just tape over the main subject on dark paintings. If it’s a very large painting, I paint around the main object. I have occasionally painted dark around more complex paintings. It takes time and care and good thick paint. I hope that you will experiment and still learn from what you saw.
Me fascina❤❤❤❤❤

That's so lovely. Now this is something I really want to try. I can't remember anyone mentioning this(Bokeh) before. Thank you so much.

It’s pretty fun! I hope you love it.
Very nice. I love bokah and use it a lot in my Christmas/Winter themed paintings. I think it's worth noting for anyone seeing this, that some pigments don't lift as well as others, or are more staining. Experimenting is half the fun though! Good stuff. :)

You are so right. I have used a magic eraser a time or two. I do have a video about just backgrounds and if I remember correctly I did mention that in it.

Thank you! True words.
They are all really useful. How did you mask the Christmas bauble?
@thewatercolorclassroom-bec7040

I used masking tape, then cut around it with a knife.
Do you ever start with the background or do you always add it after painting the main subject?

I sometimes do the background as I go along but I seldom do the background first. I don’t always know exactly which colors I will end up with and so doing the background first doesn’t always seem practical.
I don't get how you paint the dark background without getting into the flowers or whatever detailed objects in the foreground. Do you use liquid mask over the painted objects? If you can't guess, I'm a newbee.

When it is a more complex piece, I use a small brush for the small background areas. Even though it’s not an all black background I would do it the same way as I did the little spaces between the grapes in this video. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/X4SomKqCc6_Nm9o.html
When you did the bauble you kept saying bouquet as in flowers did you mean bokah, I was confused

I meant bokeh which I understand is pronounced bouquet.
What tape did you use? Masking tape? I thought it would lift the color off.

I wanted to know how to create those circles since long time ago. I saw some watercolor paintings with these stunning background circles and I had tried hard to recreate it. However, still I failed after trying many different ways. I will definitely try to use your method. Thanks so much for showing us this trick.
