    Such great tips as always. Interesting compressing theory. I learned for a time in Thailand and my instructor put an emphasis on compressing the bottom. He was Thai and trained in Chiang Mai. So not sure if it's a Western thing but who knows, I know their medical schools often use Western books so maybe some got thrown into the pottery as well. Not that they wouldn't have had their own massive clay knowledge and history to call upon but interesting.

    Hey☺️ Love your content! What if there are only small holes in the glaze and a pling sound?

  • @PotterytothePeople

    @PotterytothePeople

    3 жыл бұрын

    Holes in the glazes are called pinholes (or maybe crawling?) that is a firing problem, not really a crack. Pinging usually comes from crazing.

    I often a like 1 crack in my glaze usually at the base of a wall, just 1 lil 1-3” crack in the glaze, looks like it was pulling apart. a spoon rest had a piece of underglaze bubble up and chipped off a little rectangular chunk of glaze n the underglaze with it, but when I try to research it just shows crazing!.

  • @PotterytothePeople

    @PotterytothePeople

    2 жыл бұрын

    Technically yes, but there are different thoughts on this among potters. If the clay is vitrified, I generally think they are ok. Pinholes can appear from a bunch of different problems. I will make a video about it!

    I do agree with you that compressing is not so important .The base needs to be clean, smooth and even like you say .I have never got cracks at the bottom.Maybe the s crack because I might have left some slip when I went for the closed form .

    Do you mean the piece is round at the top or something? You can make a sort of support with a bucket and a towel (or something else) and to rest them upside down if theyre round on the top. This is what I do because I really believe they need to be flipped, so I will do it however I can.

    How about some kinstugi? Gold-powder and some kind of resin type of glue will fill the cracks and only highlight their individual beauty.

    😮 I just heard you say never open your kiln before 100 Celsius? I think you meant 100 Fahrenheit. I don't ever open before it is within 20 F of ambient temperature. This seems like a good rule of thumb. But if you are opening at 100C and don't have any problems, then okay, I can not speak to that as I have never opened my kiln at that high temperature.
