I have all the DVD’s Jamal, and I live in the Uk! I used to order them and pay tax again because it was coming in from the US. But let me tell you, those DVDs gave me wings! It was you and Jermaine Griggs (Hear & Play ) that made becoming a gospel musician possible. And for that my friend, I will forever be grateful 😊🙏🏾🔥🇬🇧

Andre Crouch told me his Dad prayed over him when the musician at his church quit. The next Sunday he started playing. Andre was a rare prodigy! Most will not start playing that well almost immediately. Most of us will have to practice, practice, practice! Thanks for the good advice Jamal.

This is so timely! We think the worst about the particular styles that we have. Growing up, I was the dude that got up when the big names came in and surrendered to them. In church if you don’t play like everyone else, they tend to frown on you. Thank God for Jesus. I honed in on the strengths I had and not the weaknesses. I was good at sequencing the songs as good as the originals and maybe adding a wrinkle or 2. Then I was called demo man 😂😂😂. The moral of this story is, just do you. People will criticize or compare you with who they think is nice but God has made us diverse. Embrace it. Love and Blessings!

Wow!!! I really needed this!!!!!!!!! As a church musician I have dealt with intimidation in the church and from other musicians…both perceived in my own mind and real things being told to me. And as a woman in the mix it’s been sooooo hard. I’ve been in churches with musicians whose ego was so big that I didn’t even want to play. It all felt like I was always on display and that what I genuinely wanted to do was under scrutiny. I still struggle with playing at church. I have thoughts like am I enough? Is it awkward? I hate that! I have struggled with the balance of learning the song and playing with excellence versus overthinking stuff and freaking out bc u don’t sound exactly like whomever. I wish I were more confident. But I’m not giving up since this is what God called me to do. Thank you for this.

Wow. I am also a female keyboardist and practically everything you have said is the same with me! However, I won’t give up, as I too believe that it is what I have been called by God to do. Besides, I love it too much. I will be praying for you sis…Let’s keep going!

Man this one hit home. Im all too familiar with having got embarrassed behind the keyboard in church. One particular moment I had that was such a very embarrassing and disheartening moment pushed me into how I play today. Even though I had to go through that horrible moment, over time I looked at it as a blessing in disguise because getting past the embarrassment actually gave me courage and freedom, and who would not want that ! Thank you Jamal !

As a keys player for about 20 years (23 as a church musician all together), it has taken me sooooo long to get this! I am finally at a point in which I am confident in who I am as a musician. I have taken time over the last 2+ years to grow as a keys player, but within this time too, I have also taken time to become more confident in my style and approach. I continue to grow as a musician adding more components to my playing, but I’m also not trying to be like any other musician.

God Bless you Jamal😢 I’ve struggled with this my entire life as a musician in church.. always comparing myself to other church musicians and stepping away because of it. I let go of what God placed in my hands saying well it’s no longer in style (sax). It’s not approved by all the “A lister” musicians. I forgot that God gave me my gift and no one else. Thank you for such a wonderful message. Blessings upon you and your family in Jesus Name🙏

Thank you for always sharing and caring. One thing that always helped and continues to help me is acknowledging that the Bible says for us not to covet. I don't want to be like someone else. I might learn from others but I'll try to incorporate it to a style that is unique. It's tough when others look down on you but we are playing for God first. If He is pleased, then all is beyond good.

There are men and women here who play far better than I, but I have no problem sitting behind them and playing. I just continue to do what God gave ME and keep it moving while continue to grow.

I’m 49 years old. Gave up drumming for 10 years. Started playing bass guitar as a hobby. I’m that guy that buried the talent God gave me. Although I’m just playing bass guitar as a hobby… im doing it unto the Lord the best I can. Guys, don’t be the guy that buried your talent. You will regret it like you will not believe. I never played gospel music but I think this topic apply to all musicians.

Very encouraging... been playing for many years... very little at church or church functions... self taught and don't read music but God gave me a gift and i haven't used it enough for Him... possibly because of some kind of pride - in the show off sense... another issue I have now is that most of the music I hear churches play either doesn't align with scripture to me or the ministry behind it seems sketchy to me... please keep me in prayer... God bless you all
