Stop Charging Your Phone at Night, Here's Why

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

It’s a basic thing - you want your phone fully charged in the morning so it’ll last through the entire day. And even with cutting-edge smartphones that can charge to max capacity in a matter of an hour, there’s no guarantee that you’ll remember to charge it in the morning while you’re in a sleepy daze.
Advice to leave your phone unplugged during the night may seem risky. The worst fear here is that your phone will charge down while you sleep and won’t see the dawn of a new day to wake you up like you’re used to. But still, you can’t go against the word of science. Leaving your smartphone on a charger is bad for it.

SUMMARY:
- Even though lithium-based batteries are rechargeable by nature, and made with this process in mind, they’re highly vulnerable to constant interactions with high voltage electricity, like in the outlets of your house.
- There are automatic switches on your phone that’ll stop the charging process the very moment it reaches 100%. But when your phone naturally goes down to 99%, the charging will start all over again.
- Good, high-quality chargers have special chips in them that prevent overcharging. So it’s advisable not to skimp on chargers - this way you won’t spend much more money on a new battery or entire smartphone too soon.
- Overall, it’s always advisable to use good quality tech when it comes to something as expensive as smartphones these days.
- Heat is bad for batteries. That’s why it’s so harmful to your phone if you leave it in a closed car in the middle of summer.
- You’ve probably heard something about fully depleting the charge of your smartphone and then charging it to the maximum capacity. This is fair for devices from the past decade.
- Any modern lithium-ion battery won’t get lazy like a cadmium based one, so you don’t have to worry about that.
- Scientists and engineers promise that soon, we’ll have another kind of lithium-based battery that’ll be able to charge in a matter of minutes and last for more than one day.
- One of their new ideas is to make battery chargers that can produce energy from a Wi-Fi signal.
- And how about charging a phone with a sound? Using piezoelectric principals, tiny nanogenerators will be able to transform the surrounding sound to electric power. -
- Scientists from Japan are in the middle of a decades-long study that will allow replacing lithium ion batteries with sodium.
- Another idea is to use literal sand in batteries. Not quite literal though, as this battery will use silicon - the main component of the sand.
- But for now, the best course of action is to use good quality charging equipment, keep your smartphone out of the heat, and most importantly, keep the charge in it between 30% and 90%.

    The charger (a circuit inside the phone) stops charging when the battery hits 100% (not "100%" indication on the screen, 100% of the "not being charged" voltage at the terminals). When the battery drops to somewhere between 97% and 99% (depending on what the manufacturer has chosen), the charger starts charging again. The thing you plug into the wall isn't really a charger, it's just a source of power. A well-designed one doesn't let the phone see "raw power", the phone sees 5 Volts (or 9 Volts or 12 Volts, depending on what the charger is calling for). Don't charge your phone all night WITH A CHEAP DOLLAR STORE CHARGER. But the manufacturer's charger is normally safe. (And the phone's battery will be fully, or almost fully, charged in the morning.) "Don't let your phone charge all night" is just another urban legend that's been shown, over and over, to be false.

    1:13 "They're highly vulnerable to constant interaction with high voltage electricity, like in the outlets of your house." The phone gets 5vDC at 1 - 2A, (not 120v @ 60Hz) which is exactly what it's designed for. As for the explanation of a NiCd battery's memory effect... You CAN fully charge them but they will only discharge partially to the 'memory' point, limiting it's useful capacity.

    This is officially obsolete w/modern mobile devices. According to Apple, charge your iPhone whenever you want. Trickle charging won’t effect your total cycles. Also, Qi technology protects from overheating and overcharging. Don’t listen to this guy ^ except for not leaving your battery in a hot locked car or similar place.

    As an electronics engineer and lithium-ion battery expert I can say you can safely ignore all advice in this clip. Modern cell phones have extremely good battery management. The only thing I do differently is to use the slowest / least powerful charger I can find so that my battery charges slowly at night, thus reducing cycling wear. This is typically the 500mA available from the slower/older usb chargers and sockets. I also avoid excessive heat for prolonged periods to reduce calendar aging. My Samsung S4 is around 6 years and the original battery is still in good shape.

  • @monalong8900

    I am a CT and I agree. Charge at a slow rate easier on the battery. Nickel-cad are damaged by overcharging not Lithium. The utility charges less between 12:01am and 6am not that it would be much of a draw anyway.

    @@leejeffers1240 You can look at the specifications for the charger, usually on the charger itself or on the box for the charger. It will say e.g. 500mA or 1A or 2A or 3A - A 1A or 500mA charger will charge quite slowly, but perfect for overnight charging. 2-3A is for when you need to charge quickly. Android also now has an option to select between a slow charging and fast charging.

  • @Draculapin

    @Draculapin

    2 years old comment. What's you take on charging now ? overnight with Battery Optimized Charging, even if it keeps the phone at 100% for few hours before you wake up or charge in the morning for an hour or two (can be fast charging) and using it right away so it doesn't stay above 80% for too long

  • @juliangerber1321

    @juliangerber1321

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Draculapin So, I still don't like fast charging - it accelerates cycle wear, especially as the batteries get older. Few, if any, chargers reduce charging current as a battery capacity deteriorates, so go for as slow as you can to compensate, especially on phones older than a couple of years. Plus faster charging also results in a hotter battery, and heat over time degrades the battery even more. My preference is to let it charge slow, and cool, at night. Phone will cut off charging when battery is full. Also, feel free to top up your battery as often as you need throughout the day with a short charge while you eat lunch / whatever, it will only help. If someone says the word "charge memory" to you in the context of cell phones, you can safely ignore all their battery knowledge. The big killer for a lot of cell phone batteries is calendar aging - it's a function of temperature and time, and roughly doubles for every 10C above room temperature. So try keep your cell phone from heat or from running hot, don't leave it sitting in the sun for a long time

    Don't overthink it. Just plug your phone in to charge when you go to bed at night and let it charge. My phones usually last until they are too obsolete to update. You've got other, real things to worry about, certainly not this.

    I've been doing this for 3 years on my Samsung S10. No issues to date! I use the Samsung charging "cube". I believe it automatically dials down the charge rate as to avoid battery damage.

    Y'know, theres a reason to why phones have built in safety features. Sensors tell the device what the battery temp is, and can limit the charge rate to reduce heat. Devices are also plenty smart enough to slow and cut off charging at the appropriate voltage. Leaving a device plugged in after it's done charging doesn't hurt it, as again, it automatically regulates charging and cuts off where appropriate. I leave my phone plugged in alongside me when I sleep, and I've done so for many years with no issues. I feel like this video was made by someone who doesn't really know anything about the electronics inside devices nowadays, and didn't bother to do appropriate research on it. At this point you're just scaring people for something that's not even an issue anymore (and hasn't been for quite a number of years).

    That’s true All my previous iphones’ were draining energy quickly because I was leaving them on charger when I go to sleep. I decided to make a new strategy with my new phone that I bought recently. I turn on the airplane mode when I go to sleep rather than keeping it on charger. That way the next day the phone will be charged still. NEVER LEAVE YOUR PHONE ON CHARGER WHEN IT IS 100% CHARGE!!
