My dog is 12 Years old and looking like 4. We stopped giving her regular dog food and make our own homemade and the lumps on her belly disappeared and her ears naturally got rid of the yeast infections, and tbh she doesn't gather nearly as many ticks and hasn't had any fleas and she is outside all the time.

Hi! Thank you for another interesting video. Glad that you have included treats for our furry friends. I have not read all the comments, but I wanted to add something. I once belonged to a dogs treats group and they always stressed that any meat that was going to be dehydrated raw for pets had to be deep frozen for at least a week to kill parasites. Also, after the raw meat treats have been dehydrated, and depending on the protein used, they had to be "oven blasted" for 5 minutes at 150C in order to kill bacteria harmful to humans handling the treats. Keep dehydrating!! :)

I did sweet potatoes for our dog and used the canned sweet potatoes in light syrup since we don’t eat them sweet. Rinsed, cut into small slices and dehydrated. She loved them. She regularly gets bits of people food anyways so I’m sure she would love the chicken and the sweet potatoes in chicken broth.

Love this idea!!! I just got a puppy so it's a timely one!! I used to make jerky all the time for my family and I discovered a little secret that works amazingly well. Go to your deli counter at the grocery store and have them slice chicken or beef or whatever fairly thin, not shaved, just thin. This meat is already pre-cooked. Take it home, marinate it, then dehydrate for awesome jerky!

I dehydrate deli meat for myself frequently. I do try to find lower sodium cuts because the salt content can be very highly concentrated once the meat is dry. I wouldn't use it as dog treats due to the high salt. But they do get really crispy and tasty.

Thank you Darcy for these recipes! It looks like Shelby really like your treats! This is so much better to do your own treats, you can make them to your dog’s taste or needs… and it costs a lot less than bought at the store. Unfortunately for us, we lost our beautiful furry friend Kimo over three years ago, I know hw would have loced them. Once I started making his dog cookies, he did not want any others… sometimes friends of mine wanted to give him their dog cookies or treats, but if they came from the store, hexwould not eat them. So I would make a batch every second weeks and freeze them… even when we went camping with him, they were on his list. 😊 I will share your video with my friends, I really like your videos, they are cery informative as well. Thank you again!

Thank you so much for this. . . . I've been cooking chicken and mixing it (in my stand mixer) with sweet potatoes or other dog-safe foods for my dog now that he's older and beginning to have joint issues. However, I didn't think of adding turmeric and pepper for him, I take turmeric myself (duh!) - I also hadn't yet thought of dehydrating these for him, I've been freezing them either in muffin pans or just in mounds on a cookie sheet. Haha! Enjoyed the Soylent Green reference 😆 Okay - now to finish watching the video!

I learned a few things and I know I'll be saving some money as well by making these treats for my two multi-Poo pups, sisters, who just turned 7 on 3/23! I love to have a variety of homemade everything for them. It just so happens I have the Herb Ox I got from Amazon (couldn't find it in stores, hmm...) so I'm prepared. Shelby, if you don't have meat or chicken, what vegetarian recipes have you seen that are healthy for my pets ? I bought several bottles of oriental fish sauce a few months back to encourage my cats and my pit bull Mosh to eat nutritious things I make for them that they sort of turn their noses up at. Couple drops of the stinky fish sauce and they think it's wonderful..hahaha. I'd like to make veggie treats using the fish sauce, but realize I'll need to keep them in glass jars so I don't have to smell them ! Ps..fish sauce is cheap.

Safe food handling recommends it. But you can also put it into an oven at 250F to blast for about 15 min to get rid of any bacterial issues. Dehydrators don't always heat to a consistent 160F, which is where the concern comes -thus the recommendation.

I love the ideal of making her treats instead of the ones you buy. I've had to start buying the chewier ones and to me they smell and look disgusting. She just gets a tiny bit of one treat at a time. Thanks Darcy, and your dad's dog is adorable. My dad moved in with me after my mom passed away and looking back it was one of the sweetest times in my life. I've been watching your channel for a couple years. I bought my dehydrator at Menards for around $35. I have used it a ton and I love it. I have your book "Dehydrating Basics & Journal for Beginners"....I've dehydrated a bunch and even powdered some tomatoes. I love it.........easy and space saving! You are the best! Blessings to you and your family!

I'd you do the cooked version. They will be a little softer, but not chewy. You can leave them on the counter to soften up some, but always store in the fridge since they won't be completely dry

Be very careful with rawhide. Dogs can't digest it. Some dogs will swallow large pieces and choke also. Sorry to be a downer about that but I never give my dogs rawhide because of that. There's a ton of better options that they can digest that you can do, and Darcy has just given us 2 great ideas!

Great video Darcy. I have a bag of sweet taters and have been putting off drying them as I have plenty right now. This is another way to use them and they will keep. Also I use canned chicken legs that are past what I think is great eating, so I will carefully debone, grind up and dehydrate it. When it gets nearly dry, I cut in strips and turn over to finish up. But this time I will use the turmeric trick!

Hello Darcy! This question is not about the dog treats, but about the DH Trays. The "book" says to "avoid scratching" the DH to put the trays in "smooth side" down. I wasn't too positive about which side they were talking about, but I see that you are loading the trays with the "lip" side down and the mesh side up. Is that what they meant? It made more sense to me to so it the other way since that gives you an "edge" to push your food against and contain it from spilling over, but perhaps my thinking is not correct. Can you confirm the correct direction of the trays? for me?

  • @ThePurposefulPantry

Think of the trays with rails - the rails go into the grooves of the machine, not the side that has the mesh.

Any vegetables that aren't fully dried should be kept in the fridge/freezer so that they don't mold. You can leave it a little chewy - but it has to be stored in refrigeration.

I was wondering, if I cook the chicken in the oven at 350 degrees just until done and then slice into thin pieces and dehydrate until completely dry will that decrease or even kill off the harmful germs? I saw another channel who said to "flash heat" chicken and any meats that might contain harmful germs for just a few minutes at the end of dehydration to kill germs and/or harmful bacteria. I am new to dehydrating and have no clue if this would work or not. What are your thoughts on this? Don't worry, I am not going to hold anyone accountable for my dog's health but myself. I am just curious as too whether or not cooked chicken dehydrated would be palatable. I am thinking my dog would like her treats prepared this way.

  • @ThePurposefulPantry

    @ThePurposefulPantry

Yep - it's what I said, too - 250F oven for 10-15 min after will do the same thing. I prefer it to cooking at 350 because that can dry out the meat in not a good way. But some of the safer dehydrating tips from the safe preservation NCHFP recommend cooking first. It's up to you. It's actually not your dog's health that is the issue - their gut is different than ours. You are the one handling the meat - so doing that flash at the end is protecting you, not your pup.

It's a very fatty meat, so be prepared to slice it thin and use some paper towels to soak it up. Store it in the freezer and let that day's treats thaw a bit before giving to your pup.

We used to have a cat who would jump up on the kitchen counters and grab the angel food cake if I had it. The only thing she ever ate that was 'human'. She's also the one that we couldn't put any chicken into the trash can of any kind. It had to go straight out to the trash. She'd jump in the trash can and root it out!

I do similar with raw liver. Some of the livers, as well as the kidneys and spleens when we have harvested our beef, pork or wild game, I flash freeze, take out and slice fairly thin. Liver doesn't matter if you slice a little to thick, since it dehydrates down to very thin slices. As you can imagine, we do have a very large amount of dehydrated liver after harvest season. I have never had an issue with any of the dehydrated organ meats when it comes to long term storage for up to a year in vacuum sealed jars. But, that could just be because our dog is a 1 quarter Arctic Wolf 3 quarter German Shepard mix and has a stomach of steel... Some of the things she'll eat that she finds outside... 🤢🤮Anyhow, I do prefer giving her the homemade treats, than anything I can buy in the store. She is also raw fed with natural ingredients raised on our homestead, both meat and various veg/taters/etc.
