I just picked up the AG400 for a second pc build with all my older pc parts. I installed it on my old Asus Z390-A prime, but turns out that motherboard only has 12v 4pin rgb headers and the AG400 is a 3pin 5v I believe. For $25 bucks, still a great deal even without working RGB! Also installing it compared to my Hyper 212 Evo from 7-8 years ago was night and day!

On the hard drive front, if you need to go ssd boot + hdd, 12tb exos drives have been around 100 usd refurbished with a warranty. I still think 2tb boot/OS ssd and 4tb programs/ games ssd is best for 98% of users but as a data hoarder I can understand some people need that space. Great boosting Jason as always.

  • @SpoonHurler

    @SpoonHurler

@@AnEagle I'm talking about for new builds and targeting a 3-5 year use cycle. Windows 11 is over 20gb itself and games like MW3 are close to and even over 100gb. You don't want to use more than half your ssd if you want it to be as snappy as possible so you want to target storing under 1tb... if you went with 1tb you'd be trying to squeeze that to 500gb which is possible but with the prices right now 2tb is just a better value. You are also limited to the amount of m.2 you have (without pcie add on cards and stuff) so it's better to optimize that. Long term larger capacity drives in old systems will resell easier as well.

Really love your boost your build series. Seems like every time I watch I learn something. I'm amazed that a 750w PSU is enough to power a 7900xt and a Ryzen 7600, that a deep cool ak400 is enough to cool a Ryzen 7600, and that with ddr5 on Ryzen 6000MT CL30 is the sweet point , atleast on a budget build anyway. Now I wish I could build a 7600 build instead of a 5600 build but I already have a b450 mobo with a 1700x in it, and 32gb ddr4 kit. But that's life I need to start saving more money if I want these parts.

I'd recommend the Lian Li O11D Mini case + 750W PSU bundle if you're willing to be limited to SFX PSUs, and can get away with 750 watts initially - it's an excellent case with solid build quality, great cable routing plenty of cooling options, looks great, and is an incredible value at ~$150-170 total.

I do this kind of thing all the time. I'm a tech specialist in a certain gaming community where we create builds for a specific game (it's quite resource heavy). Every day we get people in there with limited budgets but they're spending their money in all the wrong places. My specialty is fixing those, getting them _way_ more performance, more often than not for cheaper than they originally planned to spend.

I have a question regarding the motherboard, I have seen that some motherboard share resources with GPU & NVME SSD, for example you have x16 bus for GPU and if you share it with nvme you get x8 so it reduces performances (depends on board it can be worse) for like 3% to 10%. Do you have some advices or example of motherboards that don't really share resources to have all x16 slot only for GPU (even if I plug 2 nvme ssd) ? Thank you !

I want to make the build something that will last me for the next 5 years (of that is even a thing). Can you suggest other parts of the build so I can get the most out of my GPU and "future" proof on a $1000 to $1200ish budget (less the $430 I paid for the GPU)

I would recommend not mixing ram sticks. Even if they look like they're the same brand and same type of ram from that brand, there can still be many problems mixing different amounts of ram (also the fact that it won't be dual channel then). SSDs are usually fine without a heatsink as long as it has the sticker on top of the chips to spread the heat. You only really need a heatsink for high end gen 4/5 drives like the 990 Pro.

Thank you Jason, I really like your videos, I have been studying them alot since I wanna build something once the super series hits. I hope we can see some more build choices that don't really care for RGB. That being said, I think alot of us wanna run with Nvidia because of the power consumption. 0,40-0,50 cents per kw/h is alot in Europe and AMD cards usually draw alot more juice than the green counter part. From my understanding that is especially true when in idle mode but I am no expert and can only reference what I read online. I would love to use a way cheaper AMD card but my computer is on almost 15 hours a day, while games are usually run only 2 or 3 hours, and that electricity bill is gonna cost me more than Team green card within a year.

The MSI MAG Tomahawk boards are really sweet. I've built two systems using the X570 Tomahawk. However, with the price increases that occurred around the introduction of Zen 4 processors and particularly for the AM5 motherboards, I would definitely drop back to a B650 Tomahawk board. MSI improved the board to the point it would provide the best bang for the buck in features, and offers features most people can use. Reserve the costlier X670 motherboard for the most demanding gamers.

My 12700KF build 7800XT has a 1tb in it currently about half full. I feel 512gb is a bit too small, am glad that 2 is becoming more the recommended. Been several months since I’ve checked this change out after building my high end PC. I would have to agree that with the price lowering of next Gen CPU and motherboards, it makes no sense even for a budget build to buy 5000 series AMD CPU’s anymore. The thing I notice when gaming that really affects performance is the drivers on the new GPU’s. For example playing assassins creed Mirage with a 4080 I was only getting around 40fps until a driver update a couple months ago shot that number up to about 130fps! I also notice crashing issues due to driver issues that are resolved with driver updates. I think this was the problem with Hogwarts legacy as well with having performance issues.

Hello, I would like to hear your thoughts about my recent build and why I chose these parts. (For this PC I need mixed usage for gaming and for my data analysis/science studies) - i5 13600kf; - Corsair Vengeance 2x32gb ddr5 5600mhz cl40; - MSI Mag mortar B760m pcie 5.0 ddr5; - ssd 980 pro 7000mb/s; - gigabyte rtx 4070 gaming oc My thoughts: CPU and Memory: I chose these looking for both performance on gaming and for my studies/future job on the area. Motherboard/GPU: Knowing that the rtx 4070 is a 12gb vram card and soon enough we'll have pcie 5.0 cards, I chose a pcie 5.0 motherboard for a future Gpu upgrade, maybe on the next rtx 6000 series. - ssd 7000 mb/s: I saw some people saying that I'll not use this speed but on the future I think this 7k speed will be the default speed for SSDs.

I had a look at your motherboard's manual and it says: "Due to CPU limitation, M.2 socket supported varies by processor.Refer to the specifications summary table for more details". As for Nvidia and around the same $400-450 price range (ignore the 4060 Ti 16GB), MAYBE a second-hand 3070 if you need CUDA (new go for ~$400), but I'd strongly suggest 12-16GB VRAM with a capable GPU.

i got a ryzen 5 7600x for a "budget" build for my wife along with a 6750xt with the build totaling $1100 and holy crap is it a ton faster than my rig that not only originally was about double but even now would cost about $1500.

That’s cool and all, but I snatched (all black Friday deals) a 5700x for 135$ and a mobo for 65$ plus 32GB of ddr 4 for 70$. It’s paired with an already existing 4070, so I say it was super budget. Ultra everything runs smooth, high frames. Built for someone else and the performance is crazy! Now the prices are in that 240$ range for 5700x might as well go up to a 7600/7700x. It is what it is. My build is a 7900x3d w/3080 (used on ebay 375$ 2 months ago ish) It’s not night and day performance (tested 5700x and 7900x3d) In higher res such as 1440/4k. 1080p is where I see the diff, less gfx cpu bound, higher gfx gpu bound. Of course those who know, know this.

@@PCBuilderChannel It is! I got a 7900x3d for 400$ on black friday too. I returned my 7800x3d because it was the same price (389$). PC parts this year are great, we won't speak of the gpu wars of 2021.

Isn't 750w underpowered for rx 7900xt? I was planning to get 850w for ryzen7600 + rx6800 and posibly upgrade to ryzen7800xdx and rx8800xt in far future (2k monitor)

I don't understand why people seem to think that you can't do video editing or 3D rendering with an AMD graphics card. I do it everyday.

Hi Jason ! Just a quick question here, I’d like to get the max performance out of my 7800XT by getting a 7800X3D rather than upgrading my GPU to a 7900XT which I’d do later in the future. Would you recommend it ?

You’ll probably get bottlenecked. For the 7800 xt you probably don’t need anything more than a 7700x

Generally I recommend the 7800XT with a 7600. But with sale prices the 7800X3D can make sense with it. See our 2nd to last video before this one (best builds November) for more

Hey Jason, you’re pc videos has been extremely helpful and I’ve used a lot of your videos as reference to pick the parts for my high end gaming pc. Through all your boost my pc videos, I feel like my parts are probably just as questionable and is curious as to what parts you would change or suggest. How can I go about having you take a quick look on my build as well?

Might just be lucky but I've had the 13900k since it dropped with the enermax liqmax 360 aio with no issues whatsoever. Peaks at 86c max in Cinebench and stays around 60-68c while gaming with a 4080.

i wonder with that last build, isnt for productivity the 7950X3D benefit more rather than 7800X3D? Also, would be some better option going 4080 seems like.

So the 7950X3D isn't worth it according to Jason. The 7900X would be good for productivity though.

I'd like to go up in GPU if possible to get you more VRAM. If you need to drop to 5500 in order to do that I might consider it. See our Best GPU/CPU Combo 2023 video for more on that and you can check out our recent 5600 build guide as well (:
