I started growing fruit trees because home grown fruit will always be better than store bought. my peers think i'm crazy because i grow 20+ varieties of citrus but it's like you said at the end; it's an investment. lemons here are $0.99 each! Sumo mandarins are $4-$5/lb at the specialty grocery stores. and i always find store citrus to be bland. My Shasta/Yosemite Gold mandarins are mouthwatering. I never see those at the markets. Another advantage to growing your own is that you know exactly what variety youre gonna get. most mandarins in the store are labeled as "Honey." One last thing is that you can grow a standard size citrus tree and do multiple grafts with different varieties.

I found out citrus will work here in Western WA. I almost killed my Lemon tree by bringing it in during the big freeze we had. The heat of the house almost killed it. If I would have left it outside I believe it would have been fine. I have now ordered a grapefruit and a Mandarin. I will be adding more over the years to come.

I just planted over a dozen more fruit trees in rural central Louisiana...figs, mulberries, and pineapple guava. Why? I like FOOD! I want as much free food in the future as possible. Plus I like the birds to be around and there`s plenty of fruits and berries to share. The birds eat a ton of pests in my vegetable garden. So do wasps so I let them nest here. As long as they aren`t bothering me I don`t bother them. I don`t like using poisons because of bees and butterflies.

Thanks for another great video! It's awesome that you share which varieties do the best and taste the best. Most people buy from Home Depot and you get what you get and you are stuck with poor producers/tastes for decades. Please do yourself a favor and buy trees from Jay. He will tell you which ones are the very best varieties for the area. This yard is the best I have ever personally seen in Arizona and is more than worthy of multiple visits and purchases.

How far apart do you recommend to plant your citrus trees from one another?

  • @asu5632

I believe he and many KZreadrs will say that’s not a thing. 1-2 feet is enough. Think about it forest grows close together so if you got hot summers just plant 2-3 ft apart and it’ll be fine. I’ve done in this my garden and it’s been very green all the time

Are you shipping this season? I live in San Antonio tx area. Also im building a greenhouse for an aquaponic setup, tilapia need 50°+. Im trying to determine how large i want to build. I live in zone 9a, would a GH be helpful with the citrus if i remove them in the intense summer? Can i fruit year round, or significantly extend fruiting season with the help of a GH? Thanks!
