Depends what you want to use it for. If you want to connect an external hard drive, (upto 2tb), full of movies and TV programs from my experience some of the older boxes work better. Wolf Launcher, which is a brilliant luncher, also helps on the lower end boxes that tend to crash due to not having enough processing power after force stopping unnecessary apps running in the background.

They serve a purpose. I got one for $11 USD delivered. It was actually free, because eBay gave me a voucher. It was called MX9 Android TV box, with that Ironman interface. It plays movies from USB, which is the only reason I bought it. It installs APK files, and I don't use it online. For an old TV that lacks movie file playback, they're ideal, and if you can get them cheap enough, they're well worth the price. Despite the low price, mine is pretty responsive, and plays full screen movies from files with no issues.

Mi box(2gig, 16gb) is a rip off, you have to compromise on speed and storage just for an unnecessary Google certification. Other TV boxes have AOSP(Android open source project) which is much better than android TV since it can play virtually all the apps whereas android TV CANNOT play all apps, but only apps made for Android TV.

But *you're* not a typical end user - Netflix is a huge thing and it's the #1 reason why these cheap boxes are returned to stores. 480p resolution? We're in 2020 ... most things on Netflix are UltraHD / HDR. There's no sideloading to give you the proper Netflix experience. I mean you're not wrong, they certainly don't have the most polished UI/UX because it is AOSP but that's also what grants them a lot of flexibility. The nvidia shield is WAY overpriced imo, maybe nextgen will be somewhat fairly priced. However, if you need official streaming apps support then Android TV boxes are the way to go. For me, an unrepentant pirate, aosp boxes are perfect. Had a Minix for years, looking for a replacement now because the OS is so old by now that my apps stopped working properly. I also can't update them anymore but that's not so important, if they still worked properly I'd keep the Minix even if the apps versions remained the same (they still play all my media anyways).

Its all about hardware and drivers. With community interested to hacky hacky the chinese models you can easily go way better compared to more expensive ones. Keep in mind thou that panfrost is still under development to provide proper opensource alternative to gpu drivers. You might wanna buy those official or other versions of hardware ofc if you have the money and want out of the box experience to be "solid". But they arent definately the best bang for the buck. Also you should buy only latest hardware models of those boxes even they would have less mature firmware/software/driver atm. They will be faster in future when opensource support gets there if it gets there.

the only thing is you won't be able to use full HD with Netflix cuz it's not an Android device that's supported by Netflix but still I'm the same way I don't care about if it's supported officially by Google as long as it's good and a lot of these boxes very few of them actually get updates so you got to be careful about that do your research before you buy

I have wasted cash on 4 Android TV boxes, the mx and the Beelink GT 6k are two, all purchased within months last year, but returned all but the GT (gave to the kids, but it's collecting dust there too, as they use Netflix through the XBOX) I finally settled for the Nvidia shield 😍 should have got it first. 4k content is simply fab, the OS is so damn smooth. Our Sony 4k Android TV doesn't come close to it. So if you are looking for the best experience, Go Shield, if you can't afford it, collect for it 👌🏼 Only issue is the Netflix app detects the smartDNS, so I have to use Netflix & Prime through the TV for US content. Hope this helps.

Cost me 50 USD approx. The remote is fairly useless but I use a wireless keyboard/touchpad from Logitech so no problem. This guy is misleading people. For the average user that doesn't want to spend on a shield..these things certainly deliver the goods.

For e-readers, that basically includes all of the modern Likebook lineup as it runs on the Rockchip RK3368 which can't go beyond Android 6 because Rockchip won't provide the files for it for newer releases, instead only focusing on the RK3328 and RK3399.

The Mi Box S has 8gb of storage and 2gb of RAM. Yes, the true ATV UI is much better than the knockoffs. But this box does not have the specs to back it against cheaper boxes with better hardware. If you're planning on using this for more than a media player device, there are better options.

I have an inexpensive T95 Max android TV box, and it does everything I want. Bought it because Amazon kept deleting the Twitch app on my Roku box, which won't happen on my T95 because it runs android phone o/s. Picture quality on Netflix and Amazon prime is excellent, better than my certified Roku box. One question - won't the official Android TV boxes have far less available apps than the standard Android o/s these boxes run?

I have to disagree sorry about the preference to buy a Google certified box.I have had a few different android boxes over many years from proven solid companies like Minix,Zidoo and Mecool. The Zidoo box is a few years old running android 6 and still gets updates and has performed beautifully. and is my main go to box.I also have the latest Mecool KM9 Pro running android 10 and certified Goolge tv.I can't stand the Google certified version, so many of my favourite apps are not available from the playstore and I am constantly searching for apk's to sideload them and the UI just sucks for me, I so prefer stock android that you can tweak till the cows come home and set up just how you like it..I do agree the cheap unbranded boxes are terrible, the most important thing I look for is a brand that has a good reputation for rolling out constant reliable updates and also has good customer support which Zidoo have been awesome at.

I have three cheap Chinese TV boxes and have set up two for a friend. All are different brands. Some I really love and others not so much. All of them have Playstore access so not sure what you are talking about there. They all play 4k also. They are very different from each other so be careful making universal statements based on a single box. The one thing you are right about is that all have Netflix issues. These are drm-based issues and it means only the mobile version of Netflix can be made to work. The other thing they have in common is that they are all much, much, much cheaper than the rolls royce brands you recommend. They are all better than the under powered and under specced Amazon firestick. All of them run Kodi and Plex really well.

Most people will use these android boxes for Kodi corelec or librelec or kodi on android. Netlfix is bundled now with some many other devices that you dont need dedicated box for it. In australia even Foxtel now provided Netflix officially as does FetchTv. Also the andorid boxes you refer to have other uses retro gaming etc. Shield would be nice but if you loom at reviews there has been very little in way of performnce increase between previous editioms and the current new one. While in these other android boxes there has been good growth and much of the dev work being done on those also contibutes to the official boxes. Further ther is also the Odrioid N2. These boxes have there application and uses. Your review is true but onky from a netflix centred perspective.

That's what I've been replying when I see these comments, the end user matters as some of us don't care about Netflix if that is the only concern then just buy a chrome cast device they are cheaper and definitely come in 4k, I joined the TV box party because of the SNES classic mini, I found out it was running inferior hardware to what is in a lot of these cheaper TV boxes, £30-£70 can get me a TV box that gives me access to most retro and modern retro games plus there are alternatives to watch films 💯

If you buy official android boxes out there that are not "cheap", here is what you get: 1. LOCKED/limited playstore with many apps missing like a usable browser for example 2. Bloatware and paid apps that need you to register for their services. 3. No rooting of the box which also means u cant install vital apps that block ads. So, yeah do I want to buy cheap android boxes like the X96 Air or X96 series that do not have these 3 things mentioned above? Hell yeah!

You can also download aptoide to it and get your apps from there. The interface is definitely as clunky as shown here. I use it for Netflix and KZread. Works well enough for me. A little bit of slow browsing here and there isn't really an issue for me at this price range. Turns my non-smart TV into a smart one. Gonna try some games on it to see how well the CPU/GPU holds up. Apparently, it has an octa core 1.4 ghz CPU, so it might be able to run emulators at least. (Also, I have a mobile only Netflix subscription and it works flawlessly with this box)
